Hon. Stephen Patterson Baber, probate judge of Cleburne County is no more of this world. He died at his home in Edwardsville on Tuesday, September 14th, after an illness of fifteen days, of typhoid fever. His virtues never shone brighter than when he realized that he was dying, he said "I am willing to trust the record of my life to God and the record of my office to the closest scrutiny of the people." Neither the skill of physicians, the tears and prayers of a devoted wife and affectionate childen nor the wish of numerous friends could avert the fell destroyer. He lived a quite unobtrusive christian life, loved for his virtues and respected for his integrity. In his chosen profession, the law, he was studious, true and faithful. In August 1892 he was chosen probate judge by popular majority. In this capacity he placed the interests of the people whom he served above his own interests. His administration of the affairs of the office was fair, impartial and faithful. He was born where Edwardsville now stands before the county was organized. He was a member of a family of five sons and one daughter. Near where he opened his eyes in life and among the friends with whom he had spent his life and who loved him, he closed them in death. He was 47 years old. For many years he has been a devout christian, a member of the M.E. Church. He lived a life of trust in God and was fully trusted by all who knew him. More than 500 people assembled to pay their last tribute of respect to him as they laid him to rest amid the scenes of his childhood. Many were the tears of grief and sympathy that fell. Funeral services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. W.P. Weston, assited by Rev. John M. Evans. To the bereaved family the New Era joins in tendering condolences... ________ LOCAL NEWS Mrs. J. R. W.A. Stephens, Sheriff ______ Dr. L.W. Pitchford strenuously denies being dead, read his letter in this issue. __ NOT DEAD YET It is reported in Cleburne County that I am dead. I ran across the editor of the New Era on the train the other night and he looked scared as if he has seen a ghost and while his auburn hair stood on end and his teeth chattered, told me he heard I was dead and thought I had come back from the Great Unknown to pay my back subscription. The Postmaster began receiving inquirers and my wife several letters of condolence. Am glad my friends take such an interest in my welfare and for their benefit will say that at this hour I am very much alive and happy. Who ever heard of a spook being hungry? I am in fine health, weigh 220 and am well pleased with my change of location. Will be pleased to have my friends visit me at Eastaboga. If there are any who hoped the report was true and that they would never be worried again about that "little balance due", they will find out their mistake about Nov. 1st. Yours truly, L.W.
