Stevenson, administrator of the estate of Thomas J. Walker, to Lewistohn Bros. and H.R. Frye of New York. The other half interest was owned by R.F. Wilson of New York and it is said that he also sold his holdings to Frye and Lewistohn. These copper mines are the most valuable in the state and among the most valuable in the south. The carry a large percentage of silver which alone pays the cost of the operation. They were once worked on large scale and the output was enormous but have been comparatively idle since the death of Walker a few years ago. It is said that the new owners will immediately develop them and will build a line of railroad from Anniston out to them, a distance of twenty-four miles, in order to afford better transportation facilities and get the business to and from the many gold mines of the section which is yet untraversed by railroads. This mine was operated in 1897 by D.W. Detrick who shipped several cars of ore to New Jersey which netted about $500. per car. ___ J.C. Lane has moved his family to Avondale. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Saturday, April 8, 1899 MARRIED - - Hugh D. Merrill and Miss Fannie Abercrombie were married in Edwardsville last Sunday. May happiness and prosperity be measured out to them in fullness. ___ DIED - - S.L. Jackson died at his home in the eastern part of this county last week of congestion of the brain. He was elected county commissioner in 1896 and served his people faithfully and well. The sympathy of the people is tendered to his family in their bereavement. ___ DIED - - J.M. Lott died at his home in Oxanna last Sunday of blood poison and was buried near Lecta in this county on Monday. He was born and raised in this county. Sympathy is tendered the relatives by Mr. Lott's friends. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, April 15, 1899 John J. Mickle, editor and proprietor of the Anniston Evening Index, who went to Washington about two weeks ago is ill with meningitis at the SIbley Memorial Hospital in that city. The Index, which was established by Mr. Mickle on November 1, 1898, has suspended spending his return. ___ Officials of the pension office report that the department is almost overwhelmed with applications for pensions now being filed by soldiers of the Spanish American War who were injured. __ Mrs. M.B. Garner of Buford, GA is visiting relatives in the city. __ DIED - - On Sunday the 9th inst., Mr. Asbury A. Young died at his home in Clay county from advanced age coupled with a complication of diseases. He was born in Hall County, Georgia on Aug 12, 1815 and died April 9th inst. He was therefore in his 84th year. Coming to this state in his young manhood, he settled at the home where he spent the remainder of his days. About 53 years ago he joined the Missionary Baptist church and until his death lived a consistent member of that church. Surviving him is his wife and several children and grandchildren besides a large number of other relatives and friends. Our fellow townsman W.R. Young is one of his sons. Hurst, Judge of Probate. ___ NEWSPAPER issue of Saturday, April 22, 1899 Several people attended county court at Edwardsville on Monday as witnesses in the cases of the State vs. Jim Cooper, for assault and for cursing in the presence of females. He was found guilty and fined $15. and cost in each case. ___ Mrs. Bell is seriouslly sick at the home of her daughter Mrs. J.M. Atkins on south Ross street. __ Mrs. S.E. Tomme of Texas, visited her nephew, M.D. Robison in the city this week. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, April 29, 1899 There will be a picnic at Vaughans Mill, five miles east of this place next Saturday. Everyone is invited. __ J.N Harris who has been confined to his bed with measles for the past two weeks is still very sick but is improved some. __ Mrs. M.B. Garner of Buford, GA who has been visiting relatives for several days in the city left Heflin this morning for Cedartown, GA where she will visit relatives. ___ Persons wishing to make application for Confederate Pensions can get applicaton blanks from the Probate Judge. The pension board will meet in Edwardsville the first Monday in June and remain in session two days to receive and consider applications. The new law requires the affidavit of two credible witnesses that the pensioner, or husband of the pensioner, was a soldier in the Confederate Army and did not desert.
