Thomason is visiting his parents in Randolph County. __ The condition of Wm. Vaughan and children who have fever remains serious. __ H.G. Noell visited his brother J.J.Noell at Lincoln the latter part of last week. __ Miss Georgia Langley, of Anniston, is in the city, a guess of Miss Myrtle Simpson. __ Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Upshaw of Kennedy, Ala., are visiting the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. M.W. Upshaw in the city. __ The friends of little Bessie Coffee will be glad to learn that she is able to walk around without the aid of a stick. __ L. B. Evans of Blossburg is visiting his parents Mr. and Mrs. Mat J. Evans near town. Lawrence says the miners in Birmingham district are feeling good now. The scale for mining coal has been increased lately and miners are now receiving the highest price ever paid for mining, 55 cents per ton. He is president of his district, the United Mine Workers. __ The trial of Liner for the murder of Robert Hunnicutt at this place last year and which was attracting so many of our citizens to Edwardsville last week, ended last Saturday night at 11 o'clock in a verdict of manslaughter in the second degree. The punishment was fixed by the jury at one year in the penitentiary and fined two hundred and fifty dollars. Appeal was taken and Liner is out on bond. __ Army worms have made their appearance in Choccolocco valley and are doing much damage. Sorgham cane, young corn and hay are suffering most but no vegetation is exempt. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, August 12, 1899 Mr. John Vaughan, living three miles east of this place, was tried before Judge Hurst at Edwardsville last Saturday on a writ of lunacy and sent to the Insane Hospital at Tuscaloosa. ___ J. C. Bean and son Gleason spent yesterday in Bremen. __ Mrs. J.R. Robison and children accompanied by her sister Miss Montgomery of Carrollton, GA visited the family of M.D. Robison in the city this week. __ Marshall Payne has had a force of hands at work on the sidewalks for the past few days and some great improvements have been made. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Saturday, August 19, 1899 M.F. Owens left Heflin on Wednesday for Atlanta where he accepted a position with Gramling, Spalding and Co. __ R.A. Noell Sr. of this city has rented a farm near Lincoln in Talladega county and will move his family there this fall. He is offering his home in this city for sale at a bargain. ___ NEWSPAPER issue of Saturday, August 26, 1899 The friends of Ben Awtry will be pained to learn that he is dangerously ill of fever at Hollins, Ala. __ W. B. Huckaba and Green Huckaba of Bowdon, GA, father and brother of Mrs. M.D. Robison are visiting her in the city. __ Miss Eva Crawford has returned to her home in Cedartown, GA after spending a month with her cousins, Misses Alice and Belle Owens in this city. ___ Jerome Baird, Chas. Robison, Luther Rogers and Will McDaniel took "leave" of their parents Thursday night and will see the world for a short time. ___ Jeff Cleveland, col., had the misfortune to lose his house and household goods by fire Monday night. Jeff is a hard worker and the people are helping him liberally. __ DIED - - Mr. N.A. Webb, formerly of this county, died in Muscoogee, Indian Territory last Sunday and his remains were sent to this place arriving here Thursday evening. He was buried at Chulafinnee, his old home, yesterday afternoon. Mr. Webb had many friends here who learn of his death with regret.
