LANDERS, CANDIDATE FOR PROBATE JUDGE IN ELECTION The subject of this sketch was born on a farm in Randolph County, Alabama on November 4, 1861. He worked on his fathers farm and attended the country schools until 1884 when he entered the high school at Troy, Miss. Attending there one year he returned to Alabama and began teaching in public schools. At intervals he attended the school at Wedowee, Ala. For a period of six years he farmed and taught, at the same time having an interest in a small mercantile business near where he lived. In 1892 he moved to Heflin and entered the mercantile business exclusively. From the very start he met with success. Being a man of the very best business qualifications, honest, attentive, courteous, always ready to accomodate everyone, he made friends that brought him his share of the trade at Heflin and surrounding counties. Today he stands as one of the successful merchants and cotton buyers of East Alabama. Mr. Landers has always been fully identified with Heflin and Cleburne County. He has served on the town council and been mayor one term. He has been on the school board for six years and one of the very first promoters of the building of Ross Collegiate Institute, an institution which is fast gaining a reputation far and wide. He gave liberally of his money and time in building that magnificant structure which is the pride of Heflin and Cleburne County. Mr. Landers has been a lifelong democrat, taking an active interest in all things which he thought best for the people. He has before been a candidate for the office to which he aspires and is therefore not wholly unknown to people. Mr. Landers is a man friendly to the common people, kind to the very highest degree. He is a true gentleman and if elected to the office of probate judge the people will have a man in whom they can trust. He will always accomodate no matter how exalted his position might be. His office will be a place where the people will get justice and all records will be kept in the most accurate form.
