Waters, section foreman on the railway this place, was recently placed in charge of the yards at Anniston and this will will move his family to that place. __ W.T. Williams is dangerously ill with measles and bronchial pneumonia. All the members of Mr. Williams' family have the measles. ___ Deputy Collector W.W. Battle of Anniston this week captured two illicit distilleries in Cleburne. One was near Muscadine, a sixty gallon outfit, the other near Fruithurst, a thirty five gallon outfit. No arrests were made. ___ NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, March 12, 1904 Mr. E.G. Barker who lives near Bell Mills lost his dwelling by fire last Saturday. Nearly all his household goods were saved. The loss is about five hundred dollars with no insurance. ___ N.R. White of Randolph County received the largest amount for a bale of cotton ever paid in Heflin. The bale weighed 618 pounds and was bought by Bean and McMurray at 15 cents a pound, netting $92.70. ___ DIED - - Mr. W.T. Williams died at his home in this city last Saturday after a short illness of bronchial pneumonia. He was buried here Monday afternoon. Mr. Williams moved to Heflin two years ago from Hightower and had made many friends here who are grieved by his death. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias lodge at this place. His wife and four small children survive him and they have the sympathy of the people of Heflin. ____ DIED - - John William Brown of Muscadine died at the Grady hospital in Atlanta on Tuesday. He had been a sufferer from stomach trouble for several months. A few weeks ago he began to grow worse and Tuesday morning he was carried to Atlanta for treatment but he never rallied, dying that evening. Mr. Brown was one of the most prominent men of the county and his good influences will be missed. His remains were interred at Muscadine camp ground on Thursday with Masonic honors. ___ Judge John Pelham has called a special term of the circuit court to convene on Monday March 28th. There are ten homicide cases on the docket and it will require several days to try them. ____ NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, March 19, 1904 Garry Grice was tried at Edwardsville this week charged with the murder of W.H. Owen. The jury returned a verdict on not guilty based on justifiable homicide. ___ Mrs. James M. Evans is seriously ill of pneumonia at her home on Vickery street. Her friends home she will quickly recover. Mr. Evans has been confined to his bed with measles. ___ IN MEMORIAM of MRS. DULA JACKSON She has gone to rest, the one whom he loved best, and when we all gather around, oh, how we miss our sisters from our sight. No more her cheerful voice to hear or smiling face to see. But god our father knows best. She has crossed the river to the shining shore and is rejoicing with the loved ones gone before. Dula Jackson was born August 8, 1877 and died December 17, 1903. She joined the M.E. church at an early age and lived a true and christian life. She was sick only a few days the last of which as full of pain which she bore with all patience until her saviour said, well done, thou good and faithful servant, enter thou into the kingdom of glory. Her death was not unexpected by those with her but was a graet shock to her many friends and relatives away. The death of so pure a woman brings sorrow and sadness to all hearts that knew her. Her cheerful and sweet disposition made her the idol of all who knew her. Her life was full of sunshine and gladness and as a wife and neighbor few indeed were her equals. Now as the dark shodow of sorrow hovers over her husband and relatives and it seems to them an irreparable loss and as overpowering misfortune, yet what is their loss is her gain....she talked beautifully before death and said "I am prepared. If it be the lord's will I am ready to go. You all be good and meet me in heaven." ___ NEWSPAPER issue of Saturday, March 26, 1904 Jep Morgan was taken ill suddenly of pneumonia last Sunday and has been dangerously sick for several days but is improving today. ___ JOSHUA MORRIS, OLDEST MAN IN CLEBURNE ACCIDENTALLY DROWNED Joshua Morris, the oldest citizen of this county was drowned in the Tallapoosa River last Saturday night. He had been to visit some of his relatives and was returning home and is supposed that he lost his way, fell into the river and was drowned. His body was receovered Sunday morning and was buried on Monday. He was 100 years old. ___ DIED - - Mrs. Nancy Evans, wife of Jas. M. Evans, died at her home in this city Sunday afternoon after a short illness of pneumonia. Her husband and four small children, a mother and several brothers survive to mourn her death. Mrs. Evans was a good woman, an affectionate mother and kind wife, and her death is lamented by her neighbors and acquaintances and deeply grieved by husband and relatives. Her remains were interred in the cemetery at Evans Chapel on Monday afternoon. The New Era joins the people of Heflin and community in extending sympathy to the bereaved family. ___ CIRCUIT COURT CASES The murderers of Constable Jas. Price of Cherokee county who was killed in the northeastern part of the county last August, were tried this week. Jim Boozer was given a life sentence; Alf Wright was sentenced to fifteen years in the penitentiary and Andrew Wilson, John Green and Harvey Jefford were given ten years. The four last named entered pleas of guilty to murder in the second degree. The case against Calvin Green who was indicated with them, was not pressed. All of the men tried are negroes.
