BYNUM On the morning of May 4, 1904, the death angel cast his baleful shadow over our happy school and removed from our midst our beloved teacher, Prof. O.E. Bynum. How sadly he is missed can be felt only by his pupils within the inmost recesses of whose hearts his memory lies enshrined. Returning to school on Thursday morning after his burial and looking upon the symbolic crepe that draped his desk, above which on the blackboard written by his own hand were "Nearer my God to Thee", we felt indeed that death loves a shining mark. How dear to our hearts will ever be the memory of the two short and happy years during which we drank at the fountain of his mind and received impressions from the fullness of his character; and while we feel that we did not wait till the sweet voiced bird had flown, ere we prized its music and that at least we scattered some flowers among his pathway; yes, his sad and untimely taking off, causes our hearts to refuse to be comforted.......May we all so live that when our summons comes we will be prepared to meet him on that bright celestial shore. His Pupils. _____ LEGAL NOTICE - - Administrator's Settlement Notice State of Alabama, Cleburne County Probate Court Special Term 1904 In the matter of the estate of Handy Herron, deceased; This day came Jas. Mrs. Jeff Fowler shot and probably fatally wounded Sam Fowler Jr. who is a cousin of her husband. The facts as we learn them are to the effect that Sam Fowler had proposed elopement with his cousin Mrs. Jeff Fowler and informed her on Monday that he would come on Wednesday for her final answer and if she refused to go with him he would kill her first and then kill himself. On Wednesday he came to her house, Jeff Fowler her husband having gone to Wedowee, and when Sam sought to enter the house, she forbade him to do so and ran upstairs, he following into the house, when she fired upon him with a double barreled shotgun, the first load taking effect under the right should and penetrating the lungs. The families are well connected. Mrs. Jeff Fowler is the daughter of Mr. Lipham, a prominent citizen of the county. LANDERS DEAD Tuesday morning only a few minutes after the sun peeped over the horizon the sad news of the death of this noble christian woman, Mrs. Landers, was wafted to our ears and in a very short time every home in the city was saddened and darkened by this news. Mrs. Landers had suffered long and intensely and held out faithfully but on the morning of the 5th of July, life's wheels ceased to roll and her soul went sweeping through the beautiful pearly gates where she is playing on the golden harps with the Holy Angels. At 4:30 o'clock in the afternoon the church bell with its silver tongue that has sung out the joy and sadness of the world, that solemn tone that mourned for the nation's dead mourned the death of this grand woman and brought a sad feeling to the heart of every citizen of Heflin that shall never pass away, its slow measured secrets telling the story of the departure of one more soul and the solemn rythmic tones awakened a momemtary vibration in the breast of every listener and made each pause for sympathy and meditation. Mrs. Landers was born in Clay County, Alabama on the 30th day of September 1877 and at the age of eleven years she joined the Baptist church since which time she has possessed a perfectly beautiful and transprarent Christian character, born of such parentage, reared in a cultured christian home, her life in childhood, womanhood; her life as a mother and as a wife was of superlative worth and in whom was found the highest type of womanhood.... She leaves a husband, Mr. T.J. Landers, two children, a father and mother, a brother and sister, to mourn her death. The funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church by Rev. John A. Scott whose words were fittingly appropriate for the occasion. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the bereaved relatives. ____ DIED - - A message was received here Tuesday evening bringing the sad news of the death of Mr. M.S.
