Howle and daughter of Beason's Mill were in the city on Tueday. __ Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Nix of Chulafinnee were in the city on Wednesday. __ Mrs. James Beason and daughter Miss Edith were in Heflin on Wednesday. __ John Smith of Beason's Mill was here on Tuesday. __ DIED - - Mrs. H.D. Merrill - - - Monday afternoon the death of Mrs. H.D. Merrill received over the telegraph wires brought a sad feeling to the hearts of many of her friends. __ DIED - - Mrs. L.E. Adams - - - the death of Mrs. L.E. Adams which occurred at her home in Edwardsville last Friday was quite a shock to her many friends throughout the county. Our deepest and most hearfelt sympathy is tendered Sheriff Adams in his sad hour of bereavement. ___ Raleigh Gibbs has accepted a position with the Arbacoochee Gold Mining company and began his work Monday last. __ Messrs. Hermit and Hubert Mashburn of Wedowee, were in Heflin last Saturday visiting Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Gibbs. __ Sam Hinton of Iron City and his brother Tom Hinton of Texas, were in the city Wednesday visiting relatives. __ Mr. Anderson Johnson has purchased the Heflin, Cleburne County, Alabama New Era newspaper from Mr. Will Porter and is now proprietor of that excellent paper. ___ NEWSPAPER issue of Saturday, July 23, 1904 Mr. and Mrs. Earl Roberts of Oxford, Ala., are in the city visiting Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Moore. __ DIED - - Mrs. Hatfield died at her home near Union Grove church last Tuesday morning and was buried at Cane CBreek on Wednesday. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved relatives. __ Mrs. J.E. Brown of Villa Rica, GA is here this week visiting her mother, Mrs. M.E. Tumlin. __ E.G. Robertson of Corinth, Miss., is here this week visiting his daughter, Mrs. Kate Perryman. __ Rev. J.W. Burson passed through Heflin on Monday enroute to Trickem Valley where he goes to conduct a protracted meeting. ___ MARRIED - - Mr. James Hubbard and Mrs. James Beason of Beason's Mill were united in holy matrimony at the home of Mrs. Beason on Thursday, with Rev. W. J. Campbell officiating. ___ Dick Teal, a young white farmer of Carroll County, Georgia shot and killed his wife near Graham, Randolph County, Ala., Friday and killed himself Tuesday rather than fall into the hands of a mob. He slipped to the window of his wife's mother's home and shot her as she sat at work. He claimed to believe her unfaithful to him. A posse pursuing him found and surrounded him near Roopville, GA. Rather than surrender, Teal shot himself. ____ NEWSPAPER issue of Saturday, July 30, 1904 W.K. Upchurch and wife of Corinth spent Wednesday in the city the guests of Mrs. R. Lake. __ M.F. Morrison of Corinth was in the city this week with a load of peaches. __ The Cleburne County singing convention at Pleasant Grove was attended by quite a number of our people. __ J.W. Barnes who is not a bridge foreman in Mississippi, spent the weekend here with his family. __ Mr. and Mrs. J.H. McClellan and daughter Elizabeth of Carrollton, GA were the guests of J. Kennedy and wife last week. __ J.T. Yarbrough and L.T. Lowe of Graham, Ala., passed through the city on Tuesday enroute to Sand Mountain for a visit with relatives. __ Mr. and Mrs. Samuel White and Mrs. William Marcus Riddle will spend Sunday in Atlanta. Before returning Mrs. White will visit in Norcross and Lithonia. __ Dr. Y.L. Thomason who is well known to all Heflin and surrounding county is dangerously ill at his home in Atlanta. He has been in an unconscious state for days and his condition seems to baffle the best skill the county affords. Dr. Thomason, though a young physician, has acquired a competence in the practice of his profession. His many friends in this vicinity sincerely hope that he may recover. ___ C.W. Armstrong and daughters Misses Jessie and Bonnie of Central America, are visiting J.C. Kennedy and family. Mr. Armstrong will be here for about three months but his daughters will soon leave for Milledgeville, GA where they will enter school in September. Mr. Armstrong has been in Central America for about nine years and tells many wonderful and interesting things about the place. ___ Mrs. J.R. Little is out from Atlanta to spend the summer with her parents and friends at Heflin. She is accompanied by her little son Perryman, who is delighted always to come to Heflin and grandpa's. __ Homer and Enoch Middlebrooks were in Heflin last Sunday. Enoch will probably be in school here this fall. __ Judge Evans of Anniston was in the city Tuesday to meet Dr. C.W. Evans who is here from California visiting relatives. __ Uncle B. Higginbotham of Fish Head, came up to Heflin Monday to visit Dr. C.W. Evans who is here with relatives. Dr. C.W. Evans and wife of Modesto, California are here this week visiting J.M. Evans and other relatives. ___ Mrs. J.H. Murray is confined to bed with typhoid fever. __ MARRIED - - Marvin McCain of Lineville and Miss Maggie Smith of Edwardsville were united in conjugal bonds at the latter place Thursday, Rev. Stodghill officiating. They left after the marriage for Lineville, Clay County, Alabama where they will in the future reside. ____ HIGHTOWER Community News W.J. White and wife visited Walter Fowler family here recently. __ B.F. Snow and family are visiting with L.D. Walker family. __ W.W. Fowler and wife visited with J.M. Hand and family of Solomon, recently. __ Several sawmills are being put down near this place and the people are in high spirits over the prospect of a railroad here in the near future. ___ We are glad to report that W.J. Fowler, a prominent business man of this place is able to be out once more. He has had a severe attack of typhoid fever. We are sorry to be compelled to state that Mrs. W.J.
