Milligan died at her home in Choccolocco on the 27th day of September and her remains were laid to rest in Harmony cemetery, the funeral services conducted by Rev. Talley of Anniston. Mrs. Milligan was the mother of W.G. Milligan and was 84 years old. She was converted at the age of 13, and has been a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church for 70 years. Her life was marked by her constant devotion to her lord and was ready when the summons came. She was, despite her old age, a regular attendant at Sunday school and a close student of the scriptures. Her death is a great loss to the community in which she lived. Those who attended the burial services from here were W.G. Milligan and family and Rev. T.A.Kerr and daughter Miss Annie. ____ DIED - - Will Creamer died at his home in Arbacoochee on Thursday. ___ Mrs. Ruby Riddle spent Thursday in Anniston. __ Dr. Staples visited his parents at Oxford this week. __ Mrs. Respey of Anniston was a guest of Mr. and Mrs. Lofley on Sunday. __ Jim Brown and sister Miss Clyd of Oxford were at the bedside of their cousin Willie Harris who is ill with fever. __ Mrs. A.T. Rowe and two daughters Misses Carrie and Donie of Columbiana who have been with relatives in Carrollton, GA for several days are in the city the guests of Prof. and Mrs. C.C. Slaton. ___ J.H. Crumpton of Trickem was in Heflin Wednesday selling cotton and attending other business. Mr. Crumpton is one of those farmers who keeps up with the times, he reads the New Era. ___ W.D. Carreker is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.A. Carreker at Cooke Spring, Ala. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Saturday, October 8, 1904 John Burgess and J.W. Pounds are in Heflin this week. __ Wilson Fowler and Jeff Howle of Hightower were here this week with six bales of cotton. These gentleman say they would do all of their trading in Heflin were it not for the condition of the roads. __ DIED - - A telegram Friday night brought the sad news of the death of Mr. W.W. Thrasher at his home in Adamsville. He was the father of Mrs. J.C. Gibbs of this city. __ MARRIED - - last Saturday evening about 7 o'clock, Richard Autrey and Miss Pearl Lake were united in the holy bonds of matrimony with Rev. Jno. A. Scott officiating. Mr. Autrey is a young man of character and influence and stands high with the Southern railroad with which company he has been for several years, being conductor on east end local. Miss Lake is the accomplished daughter of Mr. R. Lake and posseses a beautiful christian character. The New Era joins the many friends of the happy couple in extending congratulations and wishing for them a prosperous journey through life. ___ NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, October 15, 1904 Mr. and Mrs. V.G. Howle of Anniston spent Sunday here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. T.H. Howle. __ William Hazzie Heid was in Heflin last Tuesday. __ Miss Clara Kennedy is visiting her brother at Delta, Clay county this week. __ Hugh Johnson of Edwardsville was here on business on Monday. __ Mr. and Mrs. P.A. Howle of Anniston were here awhile on Saturday. __ Enoch Dowson Owens was in town Monday. He will enter school here soon. __ Miss Lillie Tolleson spent last Wednesday in town with her sister Mrs. Groover. __ Mr. and Mrs. Richard Awtrey have retunred to Heflin after a weeks stay in Nashville, Knoxville and other points in Tennessee. __ Miss Lizzie Wright is in Iron City at the bedside of her grandfather, Mr. Andrew Wright. __ Mrs. A.L. Bowdon has returned to her home in Seddon after a two week visit with relatives here. __ Edward G. Almon has resumed his work as flagman on the L & N after a pleasant visit with relatives and friends in the city. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Saturday, October 22, 1904 Cecil Harris has been quite sick for several days. __ Z.J. Robertson of Fruithurst was in the city on Thursday. __ Raleigh Gibbs left yesterday for Choccolocco where he will take charge of the depot for the Southern Railway. __ J.H. Inman of Stone Hill was in town Thursday selling cotton. __ W.K Upchurch of Wildwood was a visitor here Thursday. Mr. Upchurch's son Vestur is in school here and is advancing quite satisfactorily. __ S.B. Smith who has been with his daughter Mrs. Marvin McCain at Lineville for a few days was in Heflin on Wednesday. Mr. Smith seems quite pleased with Lineville and Clay county. We have been told that he is making ready to move to Clay county. __ Isaac Blake was a pleasant caller to the New Era office Wednesday. He subscribed for the New Era and the Atlanta Constitution. __ Drs. Wright and Ligon performed an operation on William Rogers of Chulafinnee last Saturday. Mr. Rogers is doing well. __ W.P. Hammond attended court here yesterday. Mr. Hammond is one of our esteemed subscribers to the New Era. __ CHARLES McKEY FOUND DEAD Chas. McKey, a well known farmer who lived in south Cleburne was found dead near a sorgum mill in his home settlement last Sunday night. Circumstantial evidence led to the arrest of Forney Hilton who is now in jail at Edwardsville. Hilton is a young man about 24 years of age and the dead man is said to have been about age 47. ___ LEGAL NOTICE - - Guardian Sale of Land Under and by virtue of a decree of the Probate Court of Calhoun County, Ala., rendered on the 11th day of October 1904, authorizing same, the undersigned as the guardian of Thomas H. Ross and Lorena M. Ross, minors, will proceed to sell for cash to the highest bidder, within the legal hours of sale in front of the post office in the city of Heflin, Cleburne County, Alabama on Tuesday, November 1st, 1904 for the purpose of re-investment in other lands, the following described real estate situated in Cleburne County, Alabama, the property of the said minors to wit: That part of the E 1/2 section 22 lying on the westside of the branch known as Rock Spring branch, containing about 80 acres, also all of the E 1/2 of the W 1/2 of said section except ten acres in the NE 1/4 section, the property of one Mr. Hicks, also all that part of NW 1/4 of section 27 lying north of the Tallapoosa river and four acres in the northwest corner of NW 1/4 of the NE 1/4 section 27; also all of the SE 1/4 of SE 1/4 section 21....in all about three hundred and thirty acres. Ross, Guardian ___________ NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, October 29, 1904 Miss Nellie Barker of Bell Mills was visiting her sister Mrs. Clinton Vaughan last week. __ Mrs. Shamblee of Wildwood is in the city the guest of Miss Dora Landers. __ Miss Edna Belle Downs of Bowdon, GA is here this week the guest of her sister, Mrs. J.M. Evans. __ MARRIED - - Mr. J.M. Evans of this place and Miss Claudine Downs of Bowdon, Georgia were married at the home of the bride's parents on Wednesday evening at 7:30 o'clock. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Speer. The wedding was attended by a large number of relatives and friends. Immediately after the ceremony the happy couple left for their future home in Heflin where they are now receiving congratulations and best wishes of their friends. ___ Messrs. Ridley of Franklin, Heard Co. GA are here this week visiting their brother in-law and sister, Col. and Mrs. T.H. Shackleford. __ Duke Haley and Harvy Davis spent Sunday last with their sweethearts at Chulafinnee. A jolly time was reported. __ J.D. Cole and J.M. Hogan of Shoal Creek were in town on Wednesday. __ HEFLIN CITY IMPROVEMENTS In addition to new bricks, new wooden buildings and the improvements being made on the streets and residence portion of town, is the telephone system. Mr. G.W. Wager has charge of this enterprise and is working it to a nice finish. He is now putting up posts and wire and will install about forty or fifty phones before this month is gone. ___ Miss Jessie Wallace who has been visiting Mrs. Jas. Wallace in Superior, Wisconsin, arrived this week accompanied by the lady whom she visited.
