J. Harrison charged with killing Tom Linnville was brought to town this morning and placed in jail. He was captured yesterday afternoon by J.W. Chisenall and W.P. Reed four miles east of this section. The parties had been hunting for him several days and found signs where he had been and finally ran upon him sitting at the root of a tree. He gave up without resistance. In a statment Harrison claims that he was willing to give himself up at the time of the killing but for threatned violence to his life. There was a reward outstanding for his arrest of $250. __ Mrs. D.D. Perryman and her sister, Miss Mae Robertson were in Anniston on Tuesday. Miss Robertson has been in the city about a week. She intends leaving about the middle of next week for her home in Corinth, Mississippi and will be accompanied by Mrs. Perryman. ___ DIED - - A message came to Miss Fannie Cobb last Monday morning stating that her sister Mrs. Dora Crump had died suddently. Miss Cobb left on the same day to attend the funeral which took place at Steele Station, the home of Mrs. Crump. __ G.M. Woodley of Tallapoosa, GA has been in town a few days. Mr. Woodley is a former citizen of Heflin and his friends here are glad to see him. __ W.P. Hammond and J.A. Mathews attended to business in Heflin on Thursday. These two gentleman are readers of the New Era. __ Mrs. J.C. Kennedy has been quite ill this week. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, April 8, 1905 MRS. JAS. HILTON DEAD Shadow of darkness falls over the home of Jas. Hilton by the death of his loving companion, Mrs. M.E. Hilton. She was born in Henry County, Georgia on February 16, 1840 and departed this life on March 20, 1905, her stay upon earth being 65 years, 1 month and 14 days. She joined the Baptist church at Old Liberty in 1870; she and her husband were baptised by Rev. J.M. Scott. Mrs. Hilton is the mother of 10 children, four of them having preceeded her to the better world. she is now singing with the angels and her four dear children. She leaves 6 children to travel the path she has trod for 65 long years. Two of her children were in the west and four of them were at her bedside when she breathed her last. She gave instructions to her children to be faithful to the work of the master and to meet her in glory land. She was conscious to the last and she left this world shouting and praising god. Her remains were interred in the Cedar Creek Cemetery. The bereaved ones have the sympathy of their many friends. ___ MARRIED - - In Chulafinnee last Sunday, Jackson Carson and Miss Lillie Price. __ MARRIED - - In Chulafinee last Sunday, Walter Chapman and Miss Etta Thrower. Best wishes of the people go with them. __ G.T. Sears was in the city on Monday. __ Jesse Warren of Edwardsville was in the city on Wednesday. __ G.F. Hill, Duke Haley and Chas. Robison spent last week at Arbacoochee viewing the gold fields of Cleburne. __ Pickens Gillespie and family after spending the winter in Florida, visited relatives in Heflin last week on his way home to Boaz, Ala. __ Mrs. Emma Copeland of Bowdon, GA was here last week visiting her brother, W.F. Stephenson. Mrs. Copeland was enroute to Boaz, Ala. __ Mrs. R.H. Faver and daughter of Atlanta who have been here visiting her sick father Dr. W.O. Jenkins, have returned to their home. __ It has been our pleasure this week to meet and form acquaintance with Joe Cosper of Mountain View, Oklahoma. Mr. Cosper is a former Randolph County, Ala., boy and his acquaintance is quite extensive through both Randolph and Cleburne counties. He made his departure for his home in Oklahoma leaving his wife in Randolph county where she will spend the summer months. ___ Mr. and Mrs. R.M. Jenkins and little son Rolly of Birmingham were in Heflin last Sunday the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Rolly Jenkins. John Jenkins of Birmingham was also the guest of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rolly Jenkins on Sunday. __ Julian McKibbon of Avondale was in Heflin the latter part of last week. Julian is a jolly good fellow and has fun everywhere he goes. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Saturday, April 15, 1905 DIED - - F.B. Davis, near Iron City, Ala; died after an illness of months, last Sabbath at 3 o'clock p.m. He left a wife and one child. He was 28 years of age and a grandson of Rev. J. Scott who has lost all of his family and F.B. Davis was the sixth out of nine grandchildren that providence had committed to his care. He has witnessed eleven deaths in his home, eleven empty seats and loved ones missed. He says if it were not for god, he would be so lonely but so near in touch with vanished hands and whispers of voices still cheer his lonely home, and says "it is better further on." ___ Tom Morrison and J.F. Linville passed through Heflin last Sunday enroute to their homes in Randolph County. They had been to Scottsboro on legal business. __ J. Turley and son Asa were pleasant visitors to the New Era office on Thursday. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, April 29, 1905 Mr. and Mrs. M.W. Upshaw are out of town this week visiting their son. __ Miss Lula Mashburn of Carnesville, GA is in the city the guest of Miss Mae Davis. __ J.R. Caldwell of Gadsden was in Heflin last Saturday and Sunday the guest of his daughter, Mrs. J.T. Black. __ MARRIED - - Miss Ella Brown and Mr. B. Davis of Anniston married Sunday on the island at Oxford Lake. They are visiting Heflin this week. __ For Sale - - Water grist mill and sixty acres of land situated three miles south of Heflin. For prices and terms apply to Mrs. M. E. Tumlin,Heflin, Ala. __ Mr. J.M. Fowler and his sister Miss Cora were in town yesterday visiting Miss Lollie Kennedy. __ The home of Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Brown was darkened and saddened by the death of their precious little babe which was only one year and two months old. The child was sick only one day and a half.
