BURGESS Mrs. Frettie Burgess departed this life on October 31, 1905 after an illness of several months. Her body was laid to rest in the cemetery at Edwardsville, Ala., on November 1, 1905. The funeral services were conducted by this writer at the Edwardsville Baptist church in the presence of a large concourse of friends and relatives. She was born February 24, 1881, and was married to Mr. A.B. Burgess on December 24, 1904. She was converted and joined the Baptist church at Edwardsville, Ala., in June 1899, and to say she lived a consistent christian life would be putting in a mild form what she really was, for all who knew her, knew of her consecrated christian life. Her christian influence like the fragrance of some sweet flower, pervaded the atmosphere of her presence and had its effect for good upon all with whom she came in touch. She was kind and gentle to everyone and was a power for good in the church, in the home circle, in the community where she lived and in fact everywhere she was known, and we can truly say the world is better for her having lived in it and it would be a great blessing if we had many like her. This writer has lived near her for several years and knows whereof he speaks as to her pure life and spotless character and to him and his family her untimely death is more like that of a near relative than a friend, for all loved her for her kind and gentle disposition and pure life. May we all emulate her noble character and life and meet her in heaven where parting will be no more. Though she has been called away from her loved ones in the bloom of youth, and has gone to receive that crown of life in heaven, may her influence continue to live and may her good works follow her. He lived on a farm in the vicinity of Borden Springs, Ala. He was a poor man, but by industry and economy he managed to make a good living. He was noted for his kind and benevolent acts in life, having raised in the past several orphan children whose memory will forever be stamped with the kindness and good attention they received while under his parental care. Brother Gray was a member of the Christian church and so far as he could he exerted an influence to build up the cause of christ. It was his lot to suffer with cancer a disease which seems to baffle the skill of the best physicians. A strong effort was made to prolong his life but all in vain. He suffered for months and continued to grow worse and worse until the end came in the midst of his affliction. He expressed a desire to live on a few years longer and enjoy the pleasant associatons of wife and family but alas; when all hope was lost he yielded with the assurance that he would be permittted to wear the crown which has been promised to the faithful for all ages; so then let those of us who are still living arrive to emulate the examples of brother Gray and all other good men who have passed away, and we shall with them be permitted to enter into life eternal. For the bereaved wife and family; his vacant seat at home can never be filled, his cheering voice around the fireside is forever hushed. G.C. Craig. ___ LOCAL NEWS J.M. Davis, of Choccoloco, departed this life November 7th, 1905. Sister Davis was in her 60th year; embraced religion in girlhood and joined the Baptist church. She was a humble devoted cross bearing christian. Her heart and soul were in her work, laboring with untiring zeal for the master. One of the best bible class teachers I ever knew. From girlhood she understood the scriptures were able to make her wise unto salvation. She organized a number of sabbath schools, ladies aid societies and prayer meetings in Calhoun and adjoining counties. She surely lived in a higher atmosphere of faith than any christian I ever knew. She leaves a husband and five children to mourn her loss. A brilliant star has been plucked from the home, the community, the sabbath school, ladies missionary work, Harmony church and gone to shine amid grandeurs greater than earth had to give. I never saw such a floral demonstration in city or county. The pulpit and casket were covered with wreathes, chaplets, garlands and bouquets. So appropriate; she loved flowers and now sleeps under a pyramid of the same. J.A. Scott, her pastor for 36 years, Heflin, Ala. __ LOCAL NEWS E.E.
