It may come at the end of life's long journey in the mellow sunset of life, when one's days have been ample and full and active but the natural end of life's allotment; it may come at the very peak of life's achievements, the nooneday of life's journey; it may come as a hand of mercy in times of stress and anquish and physical suffering; it may come when least expected, while life is in the purple and pink of brilliance and lustre, or it may came as a blighting, biting shadow that takes from the home its sweetest sunshine and joy, forever stilling the voice of a precious loved one, leaving only the fragrance of a mother's spirit but remembrance of the touch of her tender hands. Like unto the latter, death came to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Johnson on the evening of January 3rd, claiming as it's victim, Grandma Gibbs, after an illness of long duration. The interment took place in the Heflin cemetery following funeral services at the Episocopal Methodist church of which Mrs. Gibbs had been a faithful and devout member since young girlhood. Manerva Adline Gibbs was born February 20, 1852; joined the M.E. church at the age of 12, and was married to J.C. Gibbs December 14, 1877. Mr. Gibbs died on the 14th day of August 1911. Three brothers: A.T. and G.W. Thrasher of Haleyville, and M.D. Thrasher of Birmingham. On March 1, 1921, Mrs. Gibbs suffered a broken hip in a fall and had been pactically an invalid since the accident, but all the while remained cheerful and sweet-tempered, if possible, living closer to her maker each and every day until the summons came to relieve her suffering. While Mrs. Gibbs spent much of her time with her other children here in Heflin, she made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Johnson. Church services were conducted by Revs. Hobart Murphree, pastor of the M.E. Church and J.C. Francis, pastor of the M.E.
