R.B. Carr, Judge of the Seventh Judicial Circuit: The Grand Jury empaneled by your honor's request have examined the county jail and find it in about as good condition as a jail of this character can be. We understand that the commissioner's court will make at an early date, some improvements on the jail, and for this we desire to thank them. We have examined the poor-house, in which there are ten inmates. The buildings appear to be in bad repair. We request the commissioner's court to at once see that the buildings are placed in good condition. They need painting very badly, especially in some parts of the interior. We think that the inmates are being properly cared for and if the buildings are put in good condition as we suggest, we see no reason for complaint. Mr. Jack Norton the present keeper seems to us a fine man to be in charge of this institution. We feel quite sure that the inmates will be properly looked after while he is in charge and we desire to commend him for his services there in the past. It is indeed gratifying to know that there is less violation of the law in this county than heretofore, except, however, as to the manufacture of liquor and the possession of stills. That seems to have increased. The officers have been very active, have torn up many stills and have arrested a large number of offenders. Now having fullfilled out duties, we respectfully ask to be discharged. W.B. Thrash, Foreman. ________ DIED SUDDENLY Tuesday morning last, Mrs. Chellonice Coggin, relict of the late S.W. BLAKE Dear Editor of the Cleburne News, I would like to say a few words of praise in your worthy paper for what the dear lord has done for me during my recent illness. I was first taken with something like the influenza and about a week later, pneumonia set up in my right side which caused me alot of suffering and a high fever. I remembered in James 5, 14-15 where he said "is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church and let them pray over him, annointing him with oil in the name of the lord; and the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the lord shall raise him up and if have committed sins they shall be forgiven him." Then I thought about what Paul wrote in Hebrews 13-8........ I thought of all the fevers, leprosy and the unnumerable diseases christ healed while here and I realized that god is no respector of persons and what he had done for them he would do for me, so my husband sent for the elders of the church and after praying several times and holding on to god, he finally heard our cries and my fever gave way immediately and today I am a well woman without resorting to any remedy of any kind. I just thank god for a home where I can trust him without being tempted with remedies, because I am sure god will not make a greater thing than he is. I have three healthy boys who have not had so much as a drop of tea and I give god the glory. Thank you for the space in your valuable paper. Very truly yours, Mrs. W. Mitchell Blake, Heflin, Route 7. ______ NOTICE TO PENSIONERS I will be at the places named below to deliver the State pensions to the Old Soldiers and their Widows. Alewine and others from the upper part of Cleburne county claim that revenue officers on a recent visit to that section fired the woods in beat two, destroying quite a lot of fencing and saw-logs besides endangering several hundred feet of timber. Officers, in attempting to enforce one branch of the law should not violate another. Another occasion is reported where the local officers held up and searched without warrants, cars from near Gadsden, returning from a funeral of a young man at Camp Creek. Officers are expected to alert in their duties but in the name of all that is fair and square, funeral cars should be passed up. Such "raiding" does not show an officer's bravery but it does reveal a lack of better judgment. If the above are not facts, the officers who are alleged to have held up and searched the funeral cars (one of them twice) will be given an opportunity through the Cleburne News to tell their side of the story, which they should do, provided if they have put put in a false light. _____ HIGHTOWER Community News DIED - - the friends of Mrs. Sis Stillwell, formerly Miss Breed, will regret to learn of her death on the 19th.
