Phillips, rendered a verdict of guilty in the second degree. The jury recommended a sentence of 25 years and Judge Pelham acted accordingly. The sentence was suspended for an appeal to the supreme court. Cline when asked by the court if he had anything to say, replied that he has not had a fair trial, owing to the absence of material witnesses. The murder of Phillips occurred in December on a highway while Phillips was returning to Anniston after his son had completed a runaway marriage with Cline's daughter. After a few words, Cline emptied the contents of a shotgun into the head of Phillips, killing him instantly. ____ NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, January 20, 1906 IN MEMORIAM OF ROLLY JENKINS Mr. Rolly Jenkins was born in Greenville, South Carolina on August 9, 1828, and died in Heflin, Ala., January 11, 1906. The greater part of his life was spent in this state. He was of Welch-English descent which is an unusual combination, producing in Bro. Jenkins a character and organism of peculiar mold and of inestimable value. He had the confidence and esteem of all who knew him and everyone found in him a safe counselor. He saw the good in his fellowmen and threw the mantle of charity over their defects. Others might forsake their friends in tribulation and adversity but he clung closer to them. No one ever heard him speak disparagingly of anyone. His love for his neighbor and family was boundless and unfailing being beautifully exhibited up to the last hours of his life. No child ever had a more devoted father, no wife a more affectionate husband. It will ever be a source of great comfort to his children that according to Divine providence and their father's desire that they were permitted to be with him as he passed into the valley of the shadow of death. They saw him get the victory through our lord jesus as he peacefully fell asleep and was gathered unto his fathers. Bro. Jenkins was a devout christian and a faithful member of the M.E. Church, south. For forty- five years he had led a life of unyielding fidelity to the church of god. His suffering was long and intense. For forty years he endured bodily pain as seeing him that is invisible. His feebleness from affliction and age was beautified by his meek and quiet spirit. His words were kind and affectionate at all times. He never grew sour and morose with his family. Neither did he entertain hopeless views of things; he saw a ray of hope illuminating the darkest cloud; something in the prospctive worthy of renewed effort. These and many other noble traits made up the character of Bro. Rolly Jenkins, the value of whose life and influence can never be estimated until seen in the light of vast eternity. I am honored in paying this tribute to my friend and brother whose life of patient suffering will ever be an example worthy of imitation; whose faith in god was so steadfast and immovable that it will ever be a source of inspiration for all the years to come; whose death was a glorious triumph and translation into a glorious immortality.
