Weir of Beat 9 paid the New Era a pleasant visit while in town the fore part of the week. Mr. Weir is a public spirited citizen and is much interested in the school at Hightower and upbuilding of the community. ____ J.M. Atkins and wife returned last week from an extended visit to Randolph County relatives. __ DIED - - John Edwards whose leg was broken last week, died last Sunday evening at the Central hotel in this city. The remains were carried to Cane Creek church four miles northeast of Heflin for interment. Rev. J.R. Barker preached the funeral and a large crowd was present who deeply sympathize with the young man's father and mother and other relatives. ____ J.L. Roberts of Oak Level paid the New Era a pleasant visit on Wednesday. __ FOR SALE - - 6 yokes of oxen ranging in weight from 1500 to 2100 pounds. L.T. Beason and Co., Beason Mills, Ala. ___ HUBBARDVILLE News The all day singing at Bethlehem was largely attended and higly enjoyed by all present. The old Sacred Harp was used and it carried them back to thoughts of happy days when they were young. ___ Mr. D.A. Johnson and son are installing improved machinery in their gin. They hope to better serve the public this fall than ever before. __ Master Howard Shockley who has been quite sick with typhoid fever is improving. __ Mrs. Watkins was buried at Pleasant Hill last Friday. ___ NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, August 11, 1906 LOCAL & PERSONAL NEWS J.H. Nunnally was here last Saturday on business. __ Miss Elsie McClurg of Oxford is visiting Mrs. E. Moore. __ Mrs. J.F. Morgan attended the teacher's institute at Bell Mills last Friday. __ Lewis Beason of Beason Mills left this week for a visit to Texas friends and relatives. __ Isaac Blake was in town this week on his return from a visit to relatives in Mississippi. __ Mrs. J.S. Bolt left last Friday morning for Ashland to spend two weeks visiting relatives. __ S.B. Smith of Delta was in Heflin this week visiting is son Walter on Route 2. __ Warren Maust, photographer of Fruithurst, was in town Friday taking scenes for post cards which will be on sale at Coggin's card stand in a few days. ___ Joe W. Smith was in Heflin Monday to get his new cotton gin which he will have in operation this fall. __ Mrs. J.M. Nelson of Bremen, GA who has been in the city a few days the guest of J.P. Clark and family and her brother Archey McEachern, returned to her home today. __ Oco DeArman and family removed to Oxford this week where they will in the future reside. __ T.R. Land of Fairmount, GA is here visiting his sisters. Mr. Land is a former Cleburneite. ___ Quite a number of our people attended the reunion of the Blue and Gray at Tallapoosa, GA last Thursday. __ John F. Fordham of Lecta was in Heflin last week. __ MR. SIM TEAGUE PASSED AWAY To our sorrow we will say that Mr. Sim Teague passed away at 7:30 Monday night, July 30, 1906. Mr. Teague was born in Calhoun County where Anniston now stands, from where he moved to Chulafinnee then to Dine Creek. Mr. Teague was one of our best farmers, there was no work too hard for him. His father was one of our best preachers and so he started out a poor boy; but he had the courage and ambition that brought him up to easy circumstances. He was a good worker for public interests, strongly advocating good roads and schools. He was an active member of the Farmer's Union and after spending fifty-six years of hard toil and labor in this world he was called away to a place of rest. A host of friends extend their deepest sympathy to his bereaved wife and family. his remains were interred in the Blake Cemetery by his Union brethren and friends last Tuesday evening at five o'clock. _____ HUBBARDVILLE News Mr. Nathan Bartlett and family of Georgia are visiting in our burg. __ Mr. Henry Grubbs and family from Sand Mountain after a week with relatives here have returned home. __ Mr. Isiah Beck has moved to Sand Mountain. Robert D. Johnston, Register. ___ NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, August 18, 1906 MARRIED - - At the residence of Rev. John A. Scott in Heflin on Wednesday evening, Mr. U.S. Vaughn to Miss Lizzie Wright, both of Heflin. ___ MARRIED - - Dr. J.P. Houston, a popular physician of this place and Mrs. Martha Traylor of Hightower were happily united in matrimony last Sunday. Mrs. Traylor is a sister of our fellowtownsman J. Wesley Vaughan, and has many acquaintances in our city. Dr. Houston, having been a citizen of this county for many years is well known to the people. ___ W.M. Evans and R.L. Evans are in Oklahoma. They are looking for a location but no doubt will return feeling that Alabama is good enough. __ Stell Blake of Wedowee came up to Heflin Sunday evening, leaving on the first train for Atlanta. He returned Monday and was accompanied to his home by Miss Yula Stricklen who will spend a while there the guest of her sister, Mrs. Blake. ___ J.O. Tolleson, rural letter carrier number six, is confined to his bed with fever. Enoch Tolleson is now in charge of his route. His many friends are anxious to see him out again. __ Joe Farwell spent last Sunday in Heflin. He leaves next Sunday for a visit to relatives in Iowa. He will also visit friends in Oregon before returning to Fruithurst. __ E.R. Carlson, one of the administrators of the Sunburg estate was in Heflin Tuesday looking after business pertaining to said estate. ___ Mr. Lester and daughter Miss Tommie were in the city a few days this and last week the guests of his daughter, Mrs. O.F. Staples. __ Syl Denman, traveling salesman for a wholesale tobacco house in St. Louis, was in the city this week. __ Miss Annie Smith who spent a few days in Heflin the guest of her cousins, Misses Myrl Henry and Nannie Moore, left Monday for her home in Carrollton, Georgia. ___ Mr. and Mrs. Tom Nunnally of Birmingham were visiting Mrs. Awtrey and Miss Ollie Lake this week. __ J.R. Caldwell of Gadsden was in Heflin this week visiting his daughter, Mrs. Tom Black. __ C.A. Shaw subscribed for the New Era this week. __ W.W. Battle and Geo. N. King were in Heflin this week on their return from Randolph County. __ Mrs. Annie Boyal of Greenville was in Heflin this week the guest of Mrs. D.W. Vaughan. __ Mrs. W.T. Gibbs and family. __ John Fordham of Lecta was in Heflin Tuesday circulating a subscription to raise funds to build a bridge at the old Lott place on the Lecta and Edwardsville road. __ J.M. Lofley and his business partner A.H. Andrews of Fruithurst went down to Butler countyand closed a trade for anew saw mill and a large tract of timber. The mill is stationed only a short distance from the town of Georgiana on the Louisville and Nashville railroad almost halfway between Montgomery and Pensacola. Mr. Lofley and family will remove to Georgiana in a few weeks. ___ W.W. Powell and family have returned from a weeks visit to J.W. Blackstock and family near Ashland. __ MUSCADINE News Rev. Sam Jones, E.T. Harris and others have been and are now holding revival meetings. __ Ed Brown, the man that was hurt at Cooper's saw mill, has lost the sight of the eye that was injured. __ Toy Horton has had the mifrortune to get his hand badly mangled in a shingle mill. The doctors first thought that amputation would be necessary but now think best to try to heal the wound without amputating the hand. __ Mr. and Mrs. Ab Charles and Mr. and Mrs. Louise Little have gone to Lookout Mountain for a visit. __ John Thompson and family are gathering grapes, and Mr. and Mrs. Jessye Smith are gathering applies for carrier Price. Caleb Smith and family are gathering grapes for Dr. Porter. ___ HUBBARDVILLE News G.H. Gable is building a new barn. __ Mrs. Plunkett and son from Sand Mountain are visiting D.A. Johnson and family. __ Tom Thrower of this place is working in Heflin and keeping Bachelor's hall. __ Chas. Roberts and Morgan Teague were in Anniston last week. __ Mr. Wheeler of Mississippi has been visiting J.W.
