LESSIE BECK Mrs. Lessie Beck, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Hughes was born in Cleburne County, Ala., March 12, 1881 and died March 21, 1907, age 25 years and nine days. She professed saving faith in christ and joined the M.E. Church at the early age of eleven years and lived a faithful, true, christian until she was called to join the triumphant. On January 2, 1906 she was wedded to Mr. A.M. Beck with whom she lived happily until she was called to her heavenly home. "Leslie" as she was known among relatives and friends, was a girl of a very beautiful, noble character always gentle and kind to all whom she came in contact. She loved the church and Sunday school and from early childhood has been a faithful worker in both. She was also a great lover of music and oh how sadly her sweet voice will be missed! But "the lord giveth and the lord taketh away , blessed by the name of the lord." During her short illness she bore all her sufering without a murmur. All was done that physicans and kind and loving hands could do. But alas, the master had called her and she must go. When she was told that her time had come she was perfectly reconciled and after requesting her beloved father and mother to rear her little babe, fell asleep in the arms of jesus. Weep not dear ones but remember our loss is her eternal gain. May we all strive to live the pure and noble life she has lived. The burial service was conducted by her pastor, Brother Vindiver, in the presence of a large concourse of sorrowing and sympathizing friends. Then her remains were tenderly laid away to wait the resurrection. J.A. White. ________ LETTER FROM L.M. AMOS of CHINA SPRING, TEXAS To Editor of New Era, As someone was kind enough to send me your good paper I want to thank them through the New Era as I don't know who it was. I am always glad to get your paper as it seems like a letter from home, and I am glad to know that Heflin is building up so fast, if there is any place I would like to see build up, is Heflin. Now as to Texas - - it is a fine country, but one great draw back is people getting homes when they first get here. I came her four years ago; the first year I failed to get any land at all. The next year with a cost of $28. for hired labor, I cultivated 40 acres in cotton and 6 acres in corn, and on this land I made 22 bales of cotton, average weight per bale 538 pounds and 300 bushels of corn; the next year I put 42 acres in cotton and 8 in corn; I made 20 bales of cotton and about 250 bushels of corn; the next year I planted the same amount and on the 42 acres of cotton I made 42 bales, out of the 42 bales myself and my three children picked 31 bales. We are having plenty of rain and I don't see anything to hinder from making another good crop, although I don't expect to ever made as much as I ddi alst year on the same amount of land. Well, I could tell you a great deal about Texas but for fear this goes to the waste basket, I will close. L.M. Amos P.S. Land sells from $50. to $80. per acre in this part of the country and very little on the market at any price. L.M.A. _______ LOCAL & PERSONAL News G.W.
