Wilder and daughter, Mrs. McTyre, went to America, Ala., Sunday morning where they will visit Mrs. Wilder's daughter some time before going to Seattle, Washington to join Miss Jones who went there three weeks ago. ______ Some relatives of L.S. Foster visited with him last week. They were from Arkansas and Mississippi. They returned Friday morning. ___ Mrs. Zella Herod died last Thursday morning at 9 o'clock. She was loved by all who knew her, for she was always kind and good, always having a kind word for everybody. She was not a common leaf as the rest of us are but a beautiful flower, whose radiance shown over those around her. She was married to Crawford Herod a little over a year ago and to him, his parents, her parents and other realtives, we extend our heart felt sympathy. May god comfort you in your hour of bereavement. _______ LOCAL & PERSONAL News A.R. Cooper was in Heflin this week prospecting. __ Dan Wheeler and Dan White were over from Bell Mills on Friday. __ Lem Edwards and G.B. Howle of Bell Mills were in town on Saturday. __ Edwin Brantly of Oklahoma visited the families of his uncles, G.W. and J.J. Wager this week. ___ ARBACOOCHEE News There was a candy breaking at James Stevenson's Saturday night. Andrews and family have moved into their cozy residence on Northeast Ave. __ Mr. F.A. Carver and Tommy returned Saturday night. __ After a pleasant visit with her sister Mrs. J.W. Wylie, Miss Inez McManus returned to her home in Columbia, S.C. Wednesday night. __ Mr. and Mrs. M.L. Robinson have sold their Fruithurst home and will hereafter reside in Anniston. ____________ NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, October 17, 1908 HEFLIN, ROUTE 4 News S.B. Gaston and family attended the camp meeting at Ava last week. __ C.D. King of LaGrange, GA visited his daughter, Mrs. E.E. Lee last week. __ Mr. Rogers called to see Miss Mary Etta Blake on Sunday afternoon. __ Walt Young of Delta, visited relatives in this section Saturday and Sunday. __ Mrs. Lizzie Blake is quite sick. __ Miss Emma Gaston visited her sister, Mrs. Jessie Barker, last week. _________ OAKFUSKEE News Bud Lester and family were the guests of Joe Morris and family last Sunday. __ Mr. and Mrs. Willingham are visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Brooks. __ Thomas Thrash of Fish Head visited W.B. Thrash on Saturday. ________ LOCAL AND PERSONAL News MRS. JANE BEAN DEAD Mrs. Jane Bean died in Albertville at the home of her daughter, Mrs. I.E. Hubbard, on Oct. 1, 1908. If she had lived to next March she would have been 88 years old. Her remains were brought back to Bethlehem cemetery, five miles southeast of Oxford and laid beside her husband who preceeded her more than 48 years ago. She had been a member of the Baptist church more than fifty years and lived a consistent and faithful christian life. She raised seven children, all living except one, who preceeded her a few years ago. J.C. Bean of our town and Mrs. I.E. Hubbard formerly of this place, but now of Albertville, are her youngest children. _______ Married, Miss Neva Campbell to Mr. Edgar H. Gaines, at the home of the bride's mother, Mrs. A.A. Danforth in Birmingham, Sunday October 11th. Mr. Gaines is formerly of Frankfort, Ky. Mr. and Mrs. Gaines went away to Altanta on the train and other points east and after their return will be at home in North Birmingham, Ala. _______ J.W. Bishop of near Hopewell, died very suddenly in his barn last Monday evening of heart failure. The remains were interred at Antioch cemetery on Tuesday. Mr. Bishoop was one of our oldest citizens and had many friends who will be grieved to learn of his sudden death. The New Era joins in sympathy for the bereaved family. _______ With little delay after the facts were presented to him, Governor Comer pardoned Will Chandler who killed Bill Smith, the "Bell Tree" man. _______ Mr. W. Mack Tolleson and Mrs. Johnson were married at the home of J.A.J. Tolleson on the 12th inst. ___ UNION HILL News Bud Lester and family took dinner with Willis Morris last Sunday. __ J.M. and Mrs. N.J. Williams visited A.B. Thrower and family last Saturday and Sunday. ___ NEWSPAPER issue of Saturday, October 31, 1908 LOCAL & PERSONAL News J.M. Larue of Rt. 1, left with his family for Bucker, Texas on Wednesday evening, where they will reside in the future. ___ Misses Ellie, Dora and Thelma Ayers were called home Monday on account of the sudden death of their grandmother, Mrs. Ayers. __ FRUITHURST News Mark Neff was over from Tallapoosa Saturday and Sunday. Mrs. J.M. Walker has moved back to town. She has been spending the summer on her farm. ________ MUSCADINE Rt. 2 News The singing at Mars Hill on Sunday was enjoyed by all. There will be a memorial singing at Steadman, GA the first Sunday in November in memory of Mrs. Lawson Hughes. Martha Thompson is visiting at Felton, GA this week.
