Metzger, the community of Fruithurst has lost one of its oldest and highly respected citizens. Coming to Fruithurst in 1895, Mr. Metzger has served the town as mayor and justice of the peace and besides was for several years the postmaster. In 1904 he married Mrs. Josephine B. Hagland. There are no children. Chas. A. Metzger was born in Troy, N.Y. on May 12, 1859; in 1864 his parents moved to Princeton, Iowa where the boy attended the public schools; later on he studied at the University of Valparaiso. He then went to what was at that time in the early eighties, Dakota Territory and took up a homestead at Jamestown, a brother coming West, where the brother died. Charles returned to Princeton with his brother's remains, came out west again to settle up his affairs and went back to Princeton where for three years he engaged in the drug business. In 1895 he came to Fruithurst, Ala., and had resided there ever since. Mr. Metzger had been ailing for some time, suffering at last from aphasia, evidently due to a shock received some time ago. The last two weeks of his life his right side became paralyzed. During the last week of his illness he was nursed very faithfully by his wife and sister, Mrs. D.E. Stafford of Davenport, Iowa, who was sent for when it was evident that his ailment might result fatally. He died at 6:15 p.m., April 6th, being at his death close to 63 years old. The funeral took place at 2:30 p.m. on April 7th and the remains were laid to rest at Fruithurst. Rev. Wilhem Peterson of the Norwegian Luthern church of America, was the officiating clergyman, having also attended Mr. Metzger up till a few minutes before his death relieved him of his sufferings. The funeral was largely attended by the deceased's many friends and neighbors who brought flowers to place on the casket, and before death came had in many ways shown christian sympathy and kind helpfulness to the stricken family, proving the truth of the old saying "that a friend in need is a friend indeed." In the course of his obituary address, Rev. Peterson related that he as a young man must have known Mr. Metzger, who was then for a time clerking in a general store in Valley City, Dakota Territory. How little he then thought that it should be privilege to preach the funeral service for Mr. Metzger, at that time a strong, intelligent and very ambitious young man and with all the highest type of character. The survivors are: Mrs. Josephine B. Metzger the widow; three sisters, Mrs. J.D. Dennis of Princeton, Iowa; Mrs. R.S. Phillips of Sterling, Iowa; Mrs. D.E. Stafford of Davenport, Iowa and two brothers, George W. Metzger and B.J. Metzger of Gardner, Fla. KInd and sympathetic, upright and industrious, as Mr. Metzger was, he will be long remembered in Fruithurst. ____ CARD OF THANKS We wish to thank the people for their kind help and attention given us during the sickness and death of our dear wife and mother.
