W.M. Harris performing the ceremony. __ LOCAL News The singing on Sunday at Edwardsville in memory of "Aunt" Jane Bragg, mother of G.W. Bragg, was called to order at ten o'clock by W.A. Owen. The singing exercises of the day were all that anyone could wish for and splendid talks were made by Judge S.W. Tate, Judge Glasgow and W.C. McMahan. __ TRICKEM News Joe Evans from Heflin spent Sunday with W.M. McElroy. __ Mrs. Claud Fordham was a visitor of Mrs. Ellen Wise on Saturday. __ EDWARDSVILLE News The community was much shocked to learn of the death of Bryce Hurst of Anniston who was shot by Marshall Welch on Wednesday morning. He was well known at this place having been born and reared here. He is a son of Judge and Mrs. A.A. Hurst and a brother of Mrs. G.F. Bennett of this place. His wife who was formerly Miss Lena Ogletree, taught music here several years ago. The bereaved relatives have the sympathy of the entire community. ___ CAMP GROUND News Mr. and Mrs. A.A. Roberds spent the latter part of last week with their daughter Mrs. Dewey Laminack. __ Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Laminack are the happy parents of a baby boy. __ Noteman McCrary and James McLendon spent Sunday in Fruithurst. __ Raymond Owens visited his sister Mrs. Bob Shoemaker on Saturday. __ Charlie Benefield and family spent the weekend at Fruithurst. __ LOCAL News Sheriff Adams reports the capture of four alleged moonshiners last week and several "plants" destroyed. __ OFFICERS HELD ON MURDER CHARGE Police Officers Ernest Davis and Marshall Welch are accused of first degree murder when the warrants of that character were procured by Officer George W. Tolleson and served on the two officers in the county jail last week., following the shooting of City Detectives Joe Holiday and Bryce Hurst on Wednesday. Bryce Hurst was born and reared at Edwardsville. He was married and besides his wife is survived by three small children. __ CARD OF THANKS We take this method of expressing in such degree as it may be done, our gratitude to the kind friends who so tenderly ministered to our precious wife and mother during her illness and death. Meacham of Goodwater are visiting the family of Mr. Roy Meacham, the former's brother. __ Russell Bean of Birmingham spent Sunday with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Bean. __ A.J. Hurst of Cartersville, GA passed through Heflin on Thursday morning of last week enroute to attend the burial of his brother, Bryce, who was shot and killed at Anniston the morning before. __ Ewell Norton, who has been quite sick for several days is rapidly improving. __ Mrs. Wilson Rogers visited relatives in Gadsden last week. __ Mrs. Ann Dothard of Weaver Station, Calhoun County, is visiting her sister, Mrs. A.J. Haley. Mr. and Mrs. Haley also have with them their daughter Mrs. W.H. Gibbs and other relatives. __ Mrs. Elsie Kaylor of near Alexander City is visiting her father George Hanson. __ Sol McElroy of Bowdon spent Sunday in Trickem. __ Sheriff Benton Adams informs The News that during the past twelve months he and his force had located and destroyed 200 illicit distilling outfits and poured out several hundred gallons of moonshine whiskey and thousands of gallons of beer. Dozens of arrests and convictions have been made. Who would have figured that there were 200 illicit outfits in Cleburne? __ BELL MILLS News Mrs. Roy Bell of Albertville is visiting relatives here. __ Mack Bell has returned to Boaz after spending a few days with his parents. __ LOCAL News Mr. and Mrs. Russell Coggin have been the guests of "Uncle" Charlie and "Aunt" Dicy for several days. __ Leroy Crumpton and two children of Macon, GA were visiting Judge and Mrs. Crumpton and other relatives here last week. Leroy has just had a severe attack of smallpox which left its mark. __ Mrs. J.W. Barnes is planning to leave for Gillespie County, Texas on Sunday to visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.F. Gaines. She will be accompanied by her daughter Margaret and two grandchildren, Elizabeth Steele and Raymond Barnes. __ Miss Clercy Vaughan called in Wednesday and renewed the subscription of her brother J.C. Vaughan of Haynes City, Fla. __ Haralson County may justly and proudly boast of the fact that they lay claim to having the oldest registered female voter in the state, in the person of "Grandma" Backus, who sent in her registration slip to the clerk of the court last week. She gave her age as 105 years. She is remarkably well preserved and her mind is as clear as a bell, talking interestingly of events happening long before the war between the states. Mrs. Backus is well known in Heflin and last year visited her people here when she visited her daughter, Mrs. Mary Davise, aged about 75 years; her granddaughter Mrs. Mabel Groover, aged about 45 years; her great granddaughter Mrs. Grace Norton aged about 28 years and her great great granddaughter, Miss May Norton, aged about 11 years.; thus five generations were represented in one group. This event is without parallel so far as we known. Mrs. Backus's home is near Tallapoosa. ___ NEWSPAPER issue of Thursday, May 25, 1922 DIED IN NEW MEXICO SATURDAY Mr. J.W. Mitchell of this place received a telegram Saturday afternoon bearing the sad news of his daughter's (Mrs. Bonnie Orser) death which occurred at the home of her husband at Loving, N.M., at 2:30 p.m. They moved to Loving about two years ago hoping the climate there would prove beneficial to the wife and mother's health but her condition continued to grow worse until Saturday morning when death came to end her suffering. Mrs. Orser was born March 31, 1889 at Russellville, Ala., and was the mother of five children. Mr. Mitchell has the profound sympathy of his many friends in Heflin and vicinity in the death of his daughter. __ EDWARDSVILLE News Mr. and Mrs. R.P. Higginbotham, together with Mrs. J.T. Pollard and Miss Berdie Garrett motored to Birmingham on Saturday. __ C.A. Kennedy, rural mail carrier, spent Sunday with homefolks near Heflin. __ Mrs. T.M. Deese and Mrs. John White spent Sunday with Mrs. Spencer Willingham near Ai. __ Mrs. John Lewis and daughter of Leeds are spending a few weeks with her parents, Rev. and Mrs. C.M. Morton. __ J.W.L. NEWTON PASSES TO BEYOND Mr. J.W.L. Newton, well known to our people, died at his home near Ohatchie, Calhoun County on Tuesday morning of last week after an illness of only a few hours of acute indigestion. Mr. Newton was taken desperately ill at two o'clock Tuesday morning and suffered great agony until 11 o'clock when death came to relieve him of his pain. Mr. Newton was born in Coweta County, Georgia November 18, 1851 and died May 16, 1922, being 71 years, five months and 28 days at the time of his death. He had lived in and around Heflin for a number of years and everyone whom this good man knew was his friend, and the news of his death has carried sorrow to many hearts throughout the county. Besides his devoted wife, four children survive their father; Henry Newton, Mrs. Fannie Mitchell, Mrs. Ida Bee Phillips, and Barnie Newton; 23 grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn his death. Mr. Newton was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church, joining in August 1868. The funeral and interment took place at Old Middleton Baptist church in the presence of a large number of friends and neighbors. The News extends sincere sympathy to the bereaved family. ___ LOCAL News Henry Stricklin died at his home in east Cleburne on Thursday of last week and was laid to rest at Lebanon. __ Mr. J.T. Camp, a good citizen living in south Cleburne, died at his home there Saturday morning and was buried at Micaville on Sunday. __ HIGHTOWER News Sorry to report the death of Mrs. Ellen Cook last Thursday. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. H.J. Holliday on Friday at Lost Creek where the burial took place. Mrs. Cook was seventy-nine years old and leaves two children, Mr. John Cook of this place and Mrs. Florence Murrell of Cullman, Ala., to mourn her death. She was the wife of Mr. Frank Cook who passed to the beyond several years ago. __ John Heard of Trickem is improving after a long illness. __ Mr. and Mrs. McInnis and children of Tallahassee, Fla., are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Jas. H. Lindsey. __ W.J. White, wife and children spent Thursday night with Mr. and Mrs. Jim Hanson at Pine Hill. __ Mrs. L.T.
