Byars is reported to have been seen last at the home of a neighbor where he ate supper Friday night and started for his home at eight o'clock that night, it is said. The indications are that Byers was struck by an east bound train early Saturday morning as the body had been dragged east along the track for more than three hundred feet. There is some indication of foul play it is said. Byars was twenty five years of age and is survived by his wife and child. __ HIGHTOWER News Mrs. Vera Thompson of Birmingham is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Bradberry. __ Mrs. Vassie Allen spent Sunday afternoon with Mrs. Julia White. __ Mrs. Ethel Lindsey visited Mrs. Willie McElroy on Monday afternoon. __ LOCAL News The first cotton blooms of the season were reported by Gete McElroy of Trickum Valley, Arlin Gaines of near Abernathy, P.H. Dennis of Route 1 and Matt J. Evans of Route 5. __ MRS. J.F. BENNETT DIED ON SUNDAY "Aunt" Nancy Bennett, 89 years old, pioneer citizen of Cleburne County, widow of the late John F. Bennett, died at the home of her son, Mr. G.F. Bennett at Edwardsville on Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. The burial and funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Cane Creek church at 2:30, the exercises being conducted by Rev. W.M. Barr of Bell Mills, in the presence of a large concourse of relatives and friends. Surviving the deceased are the following children: Mr. J.W. Bennett of Fruithurst; Mrs. D.S. Baber of Heflin; Mrs. James F. Hale of Temple, Okla; Mrs. J.D. Vaughan of Heflin; Mrs. Lula B. Powell of Randlett, Olka; Mr. G.F. Bennett of Edwardsville; and Mrs. Mollie T. Burgess also of Edwardsville. Aunt Nancy was a member of the Missionary Baptist church and among the oldest and best known citizens, and the news of her death will bring sorrow to hundreds who knew her. Aunt Nancy sustained an injury by a fall recently which, doubtless, hastened her death. The News sincerely sympathizes with the bereaved children. ___ NOTICE FOR PARDON Notice is here by given that an application for the pardon of Paul Luckey, convicted and sentenced by the circuit court of Cleburne County on the 30th day of August 1921, for distilling, to hard labor for 13 months as a minimum and 18 months as maximum in the penitentiary of said state, will be made to the Governor of Alabama. Lasseter visited Mrs. Mattie Lou Glass on Sunday. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Thursday, July 13, 1922 After two weeks illness, Mrs. Gust Olson, an old resident of the Fruithurst colony, passed away at her home July 6th. The funeral, which was attended by a large number of friends of the family, was held in the M.E. Church where Rev. W. Petterson conducted an impressive ceremony. Mrs. Olson was a highly respected rsident and will be missed, in particular by the members of the Lutheran church. Her husband has the sympathy of all his neighbors and friends in his bereavement. __ Miss Mildred Carruth of McComb, Miss., is visiting her grandmother, Mrs. W.R. Hunnicutt and other Heflin relatives. __ EDWARDSVILLE News Mr. and Mrs. George Deese of Gadsden spent a few days here with Mr. and Mrs. T.M. Deese. __ Mrs. T.J. Trimble is visiting in Tampa, Florida. __ Mr. J.A. Burgess entertained his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, also his brother W.A. Burgess, with a sumptuous dinner on July 4th, it being W.A. 's birthday. __ LIBERTY HILL News Mrs. Henry Haywood is very sick at this writing. __ Mr. and Mrs. F.R. Thrower visited the latter's mother, Mrs. Wright. __ Mr. and Mrs. Harbon Thrower and Lula Taylor visited H.V. McLeroy on Sunday. __ LOCAL News G.H. Lambert who is stationed in the Phillipines with the 31st U.S. Infantry, is visiting relatives in Cleburne. He has been in the service several years and was on duty with the 31st infantry in Siberia during the World War. __ Rev. D.W. Kight, 81 years old, of East Cleburne, sends in his renewal to The News this week. He has been a resident of Cleburne for many years and the county has been made better by his having lived in it. May he be spared many more years. __ Mr. H.O. McDonald of Heflin and Mrs. Nancy Cheatwood of Choccolocco were married at the court house in Anniston last Saturday morning, coming to Heflin on Sunday night. __ Mrs. V.A. Cook and son Fred will leave within a few days to visit relatives in Texas. __ The many friends of Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Turner of near Concord church, deeply sympathize with them in the loss of their home by fire and almost all of it's contents on Thursday morning last. At the time of the fire the family was in the field and the blaze had gained considerable headway when discovered. Mrs. Hicks will be remembered in Heflin as Miss Alice Trotter, who made many friends here during her stay with Mrs. C.W. Griffin, as milliner. __ LOCAL News Neal Owens of Chicago, Ill., is spending the week with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Owens. __ Duke Pearce of Collingsville is visiting his grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. J.D.
