She and her mother, Mrs. Alice Anderson and two young daughters were pleasant callers at the News office and both renewed their subscriptions for 1923. ___ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, November 9, 1922 CHULAFINNEE News Mr. Roy Lester and Miss Rural Payne were happily married Sunday at the home of Rev. J.W. Grubbs. __ Archie McEachern and wife visited Mrs. Vise on Sunday. __ LOCAL News It is learned that Mr. Mart. Harris is dangerously sick at his home near Ai church and without a change for the better cannot live but a short time. __ Word was received Wednesday that Miles Brown's condition was serious. Mr. Brown is confined in an Anniston hospital where he has undergone two or three serious operations. __ Paul A. Barker, son of Henry A. Barker of Haleyville was visiting relatives in Cleburne this week, leaving for home on Wednesday. __ Born to Mr. and Mrs. Luther Finley, a boy. __ Mrs. Bob Lott of Monroe, GA is spending a few days with her daughter Mrs. Luther Finley. __ Hon. W.A. Porter has sold his home on Ross street to Toliver Beason and will leave about the 25th to visit his daughter at Childersburg where he will spend several months. __ Mrs. C.C. Harris and children of Birmingham are visiting the families of A. Rowell and W.M. Harris this week. ___ Mr. and Mrs. T. Landers anounce the engagement of their daughter Vera to Mr. Eugene Constantine Cooper, the marriage to be solemnized Wednesday November 29th at Oxford, Ala. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, November 16, 1922 CHULAFINNEE News Mrs. S.A. Higginbotham is on the sick list at present. We hope for her early recovery. __ J.F. Thrower, wife and children visited G.W. Thrower and family on Sunday. __ B.L. Moore and wife spent Wednesday night with Mr.and Mrs. Harbon Thrower. __ Kerron Thrower and family spent Sunday with J.W. Grubbs. __ LOCAL News A.N. Norton who has been sick for the past two weeks is improving. __ Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Harris report the arrival of a baby girl at their home. __ C.F. Dodson left Sunday night for Bivins, Texas where he will spend some time with his brother, W.A. Dodson. __ BELL MILLS News L.B. Champion and family spent Sunday with his mother Mrs. Hannah Champion. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Thursday, November 23, 1922 Tom Evans, tried before Justices J.H. Crumpton and D.W. Gray here Saturday, charged with the killing of Andrew Nunis on October 13th in the northwest part of the county, was remanded to jail without bond. The defendant made his escape at the time of the killing but surrendered to Sheriff Adams during the latter part of last week. At the trial Saturday the state was represented by Solicitors J.B. Sanford and J.C. Nichols and the defendant by Merrill and Jones of Heflin and E.S. Griffith of Buchanan, GA. It is said that the defendant and others were in this county after whiskey and trouble arose at the home of W.K. Holland and resulted in the killing of Junis by Evans, both of whom were said to be residents of Cedartown, GA. Evans claimed self defense at the hearing. __ LEBANON NEws Mrs. C.W. Dryden and two sons Fred and Alter spent Sunday with her mother Mrs. S.K. Clayton. __ Corbet Phillips of Fruithurst is spending a few days with his cousins Dewey and Grady Mayfield. __ EDWARDSVILLE News Mr. and Mrs. L. R. Robertson are the proud parents of a fine boy. __ Mr. and Mrs. Wilkes Thrasher and baby of Chattanooga visited Mrs. E.M. Burgess last week. __ HEPSABAH News Cecil Howle and family of Oklahoma arrived at this father W.H. Howle's on Friday. They will make their future home here. __ LOCAL News EVERETT LEWIS IS DEAD Just as we go to press Wednesday we learned of the death of Everett Lewis which occurred at Oteen, N.C. in a government hospital where he had been taking treatment. Everett was a veteran of the World War, enlisting during 1917 and serving in the Signal Corps of the Sixth Division in France. He contracted tuberculosis during his enlistment and upon his discharge from the Army he returned to Heflin and was later admitted to the government hospital at Oteen, N.C. A short time before his enlistment he was married to Miss Eula Helton of Heflin. The remains of this noble young man were laid to rest at Jasper, Tenn., Wednesday of this week. ___ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, November 30, 1922 BELL MILLS News Duke Barr spent Saturday night with his sister, Mrs. Mamie Whiten. __ Mrs. Martha Cook and Mr. and Mrs. Mack Cook of Heflin spent Sunday afternoon with Mrs. Grady Cook. __ NEW HOPE News Mrs. Thomas McEachern and children spent the latter part of last week with her mother Mrs. C.H. Durham. __ LOCAL News Mrs. Roy Meacham has been quick sick for the past several days but is improving. __ John Backman has moved to south Georgia. __ W.T. and J.S. Pesnell of Ai were in town on Saturday. __ HEPSABAH News Lemuel Gann left Saturday for Springfield, MO. __ FOR SALE Fifty-three acre farm, all good level land, 43 acres in cultivation, remainder in pasture, with running water; good six room dwelling house, large barn, store house and other out buildings; good well water, near school, convenient to 2 churches, situated nine miles south of Heflin on Heflin and Lineville road. Newton Wheeler, Borden Springs, Ala. ___ M.V. HARRIS IS DEAD Mr. Mart. V. Harris, after a lingering illness, died Tuesday, November 21st, at his home in Ai, and the funeral and burial services occurred Wednesday the 22nd at Bethsadia (Cross Roads). Revs. W.J. Campbell, A.T. Warmack and W.M. Barr made appropriate and touching talks. Mr. Harris was about 50 years old and had been a resident of the county for some years, moving here from Tennessee. He was much liked by all our people and will be greatly missed in church work and Sacred Harp singings throughout Cleburne.
