W.A. Porter is in receipt of a letter from his sister, Mrs. R.P. Talley of Temple, Texas, announcing the death of his brother, Raymond A. Porter, at his home in Weinet, Haskell County, Texas which occurred on the 13th day of January. Mr. Porter was born in Hall County, Georgia the 22nd day of June 1835 and was in his 90th year at the time of his death, and for many years prior he was engaged in stock raising in northwest Texas, having settled in that state in January 1867. The deceased was the only living brother of Mr. W.A. Porter of Heflin and is survived by his wife and three sons. ____ WANTS WAR RECORD OF VETERAN N.B. (Polly) Ross of Hico, Texas has written to Hon. W.A. Porter desiring to ascertain if possible, if there is any one living here who can furnish proof of the services of Wm. Terry Chaffin in Capt. Goldwait's Company, Coatney's Battallion, Confederate Army; he enlisted at Montgomery, Alabama. Mr. Porter says "the applicant can obtain his record of service by sending his congressman a request, asking him to do it, which will be found in the archives of the war records of the Confederacy at Washington." __ Hon. JOHNSON DIED SATURDAY Mrs. Annie Johnson, devoted wife of Mr. H.E. Johnson, died at the home of her husband in Edwardsville, Sunday afternoon, following an illness of long duration. Mrs. Johnson was a woman of noble character, always ready and anxious to do her part as a neighbor and true christian. Rev. C.D. Knight of Anniston conducted the funeral services on Sunday, the interment being in the Cane Creek cemetery, a few miles northeast of Edwardsville. The News extends sympathy to the bereaved family. ____ NEWSPAPER issue of Thursday, February 14, 1924 RESOLUTIONS ON DEATH OF MARION W. DODD, NOBLE CITIZEN AND MASON Edwardsville, Ala. Feb 2, 1924 To brethren of Lebanon Lodge No. 484, A.F. and A.M.: Your committee appointed to draft resolutions on the death of Bro. Marion W. Dodd submit the following: Whereas, on the 15th day of January 1924, it pleased the grand master of the universe to call our esteemed and beloved brother from labor to refreshment and transplant him from this earth to that celestial lodge above, there to receive his blessed reward and hear the welcome plaudit, "well done, good and faithful servant." Bro. Dodd's upright walk and kind disposition to everyone with whom he came in contact made him friends as numerous as were his acquaintances, and won for him the love and esteem of all who knew him. Bro. Dodd was born in Guinnett County, Georgia in 1854. He joined the Missionary Baptist church at the age of 17 years and was a consistant member until his death. He was married to Sarah Ann Kemp in 1876, there being five children born to this union, two boys and three girls. He joined H.G. Earnest Lodge No. 672 A.F. and A.M. consolidated, of which he was a consistent member until his death. Therefore, be it resolved 1st, that while be bow our heads in humble submission to almighty god, we seek consolation in the promise that all things work together for the good to those who love the lord; and our lodge has lost one its most useful members, the county and state a patriotic citizen; his wife and family an affectionate and loving husband and devoted father. Be it further resolved that we extend our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family; that we mingle with theirs our tears of grief and commend them to the mercies of the one who doeth all things well. Be it futher resolved that we drape the jewels of the lodge, wear the usual badge of mourning for thirty days and that a page in our minute book be left to his memory, and a copy furnished the widow of our deceased brother. Ridley of Franklin spent the weekend with J.A. Brown and family. __ LECTA News The singing at Jack Caughren's on Sunday night was enjoyed by a large crowd. __ The quilting and birthday dinner at Mrs. Pearl Banks on Thursday was enjoyed by a large crowd. __ Mr. and Mrs. Spillman Harris spent Friday night with Mr. and Mrs. George Harris. __ FRUITHURST News Mr. George Cheatwood, residing near here, is seriously ill at this writing. __ Mr. Shabel and son Edward are now living here, keeping rooms at Mr. Harry Hall's. ___ MASODONIA News Mrs. J.L. Williams returned home Monday from a visit with her sister Mrs. Dock Gibbs Jr. who is very ill. ___ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, February 28, 1924 Ai News Mrs. Hannah Champion spent last week with Mrs. J.N. Chaffin. __ Ethel and Robert Kerr visited Mrs. Mattie Huey on Saturday night and Sunday. __ PLEASANT GROVE News Mr. Emmit Grubbs and Miss Esta Payne were happily married Sunday morning at Pleasant Hill Baptist church, Rev. J.D. Eason performing the ceremony. __ Melton Thrower and Arris Haywood visited here Friday. __ "UNCLE" JOE SMITH CALLED BY DEATH "Uncle" Joe Smith, who resided near Heflin up until about three weeks ago, died at the home of one of his son's near Blountsville, on last Friday, following closely the passing of his wife who separted this life on the 29th of January. After the death of Mrs. Smith, "Uncle" Joe went to live with his son at Blountsville about the first of this month. Old age and the death of his life companion was too much for his weakened condition and taking to his bed on Thursday, he never rallied and one the next day, passed away. "Uncle' Joe had many close friends in and around Heflin who will be made to feel sad over his passing. Peace to his memory. ____ LOCAL News Mrs. J.W. Barnes and daughter Margaret spent Saturday in Birmingham with relatives. __ M.C.
