Linder Green of Anniston spent Tuesday here, as a guest of his Aunt, Mrs. J.C. Francis, going from Heflin to Tallapoosa. ___ Walter Gibbs and Miss Pearl McElroy were happily married at Tallapoosa last Sunday, and have been extensively entertained and congratulated by their many friends in the Trickem Valley community. ___ Hugh Porter, formerly of Heflin but who has been making his home in Birmingham for the past two years, spent Thursday among his old home friends. He is now traveling for the DeBardeleben Coal Co. __ MEMORIAL SERVICE AT CHULAFINNEE Please announce in the paper that there will be a memorial service at Chulafinnee Baptist Church the fourth Sunday in April in memory of Uncle John Thrower. The service will begin at ten o'clock and continue till noon. Mrs. A.B. Thrower. ___ J.E. Wise, a good farmer of the Trickem Valley was in Heflin on Wednesday. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, April 10, 1924 LOCAL News Miss Ruth Graves of Birmingham and Mr. and Mrs. Bricken Runyon of Tallalulah Falls were the guest of Mrs. Joe Nichols last weekend. __ Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Adair and niece Miss Ella Biddy of Fruithurst were Heflin visitors on Monday. __ John William Price of Bremen was in Heflin on Monday. __ J.R. Bain of Heflin 4 was in to see us Monday and ordered The News sent to his son J.V. at Bartow, GA. __ Mr. and Mrs. A.Z. Owens and young son spent Sunday in Randolph county with relatives. __ Thomas Boman of Greensboro, N.C. spent the first part of the week with his sister Mrs. L.T. Beason and other relatives. ___ Mr. W.K. Owen of Bell Mills was in Heflin on Tuesday. "Uncle Will" is perhaps the oldest resident in Cleburne County being in his 89th year. ___ D.E. Cheuvront is visiting relatives in Atlanta this week. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, April 17, 1924 RAIDERS FIND SEVERAL MEN AT BIG STILL; Walter Dougherty caught but others outrun the officers Walter Dougherty, who was arrested in a raid Saturday a few miles east of Heflin by Sheriff H.A. Jackson, Federal Officer B.H. Crumpton and State Officers Draper, Garrett and Lynch, made bond Saturday night and was released from custody. He will be tried under an illicit distilling charge at the next term of county court on the first Monday in May. The raiders destroyed a complete copper outfit, about three gallons of whiskey and several hundred gallons of beer. Several other men who were engaged at the still ran away and evaded capture when the officers approached. ____ HIS MONEY STOLEN Franklin, Georgia, April 16th Afraid of banks, J.P. Shellnut, one of the oldest citizens of Heard County, kept $10,800. stored in a trunk. He kept the money in an iron box and the trunk locked but an ingenius thief unlocked the trunk, cut the bottom out of the box and stole the old man's accumulations of a life time. The loss was discovered on Sunday when Mr. Shellnut went to his trunk to count the money. _____ FOWLER'S CAR BURNED SUNDAY The Willy-Knight Touring car of Mr. Lee Fowler of Anniston was destroyed by fire about a mile east of Heflin late Sunday afternoon, the loss being protected by insurance according to reports. Mr. and Mrs. Fowler had been visiting relatives and friends at Hightower on Sunday and were enroute to their home at the time of the deplorable accident which deprived them of their vehicle. ____ LOCAL News Ambrose Prestridge, young son of Deputy Sheriff Tom Prestridge, fell while at play one day last week and seriously injured an already bad arm, the arm having been broken about three months ago in a fall. The second injury sustained by the young man was painful because of the already weakened condition of the arm but he hopes to be able to use it in a short time. ____ J.H. AVERY DEAD Mr. J.H. Avery, the about 80 years old Confederate Veteran of Edwardsville, died last Friday at his home, the funeral being held at the Cane Creek Methodist church Saturday, conducted by Rev. C.D. Knight of Anniston. Mr. Avery was one of the most esteemed citizens of Cleburne County and his death will cause sorrow wherever he was known. He had made his home at Edwardsville for many years. ___ CARD OF THANKS Fruithurst, Ala. April 14, 1924 To: Mr. M.J. Morrison: We, the Mayor and Council of the town of Fruithurst, Alabama, hereby extend our thanks to Mr. Morrison for his faithful work in our body. He has been a member of the Town Council for the past four years and during all of this time has been an efficient man, working for the upbuilding of the town and for the schools and the general community. Mr. Morrison is now leaving us for the West and we are truly sorry to have to give him up, but we wish for him all succeess in his new home and desire to express our appreciation for his services in our municipal body as well as our recognition of his honor and integrity. Carlson, Council Members _____ EWELL TEAGUE KILLED BY CAR News reached Heflin last Tuesday afternoon that Ewell Teague, 21 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. H.J. Teague of the Trickum Valley, had met death in a car accident in Washington, none of the details being given in the death message. Young Teague had just completed a tour in the United States Navy and had been expected to return to his home in this county. He was well known among Cleburne people and the news of his death will bring sorrow into many parts of the county. The body of the unfortunate boy will be sent to his home in this county and will be buried in the cemetery at Wise Chapel after arrival in Heflin. ____ "Uncle" Tom Campbell, residing about five miles east of town has been on the sick list for several weeks. __ GAINES ARRESTED Aldolphus Gaines, alleged by federal and state officers to have been one of the men who ran from a still they raided about eight miles east of Heflin last Saturday, was arrested here Monday by Deputy Sheriff Jim Haywood under a warrant charging him with illicit distilling. Gaines was released a short time after his arrest after making satisfactory bond and will trid before Judge Baber at the May term of the county court. ____ Friends of Mrs. E.T. Black will regret to learn that she is quite sick this week but hope for her speedy recovery. __ MRS. GOLDIN DEAD Mrs. Mary Jane Goldin, widow of the late Noah Goldin, who lived for many years at Edwardsville, died at her home near Buchanan last week, news of the beloved woman's death being received with sorrow by relatives and old friends in this county. Mrs. Goldin was a sister of Mrs. N.A. Sox of Edwardsville and was in her 73rd year. ____ The News regrets to learn of the serious illness of "Uncle" Jack Baber at the home of his son, J.W. Baber. Mr. Baber is in his eighty-fourth year. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, April 24, 1924 MRS. ANDREW BOMAN FUNERAL SERVICE A large number of the friends and relatives of the family assembled at the home of Mrs. Mattie Blake on Sunday to attend the funeral services over the remains of Mrs. Andrew Boman, who died Friday at her home in Atlanta. Mrs. Boman was 33 years of age and was a native of this county. he service at the home of Mrs. Blake on Sunday was conducted by Rev. S.R. Skinner and the body of the Atlanta woman was interred in the family graveyard near the home. Mrs. Boman was Miss Vernon Blake before her marriage and is remembered by many Cleburne people. She is survived by her husband, mother and one brother. ___ LOCAL News Elbert Green and Miss Susie Howell were happily married on Sunday afternoon at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.S. Howell, by Rev. J.C. Francis. ___ Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Gibbs and children of Birmingham have been the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Jones. __ D.I. Jackson, twin brother of Sheriff H.A. Jackson, came to Heflin last Saturday from his home in Bowdon and was the guest of his relatives a day or two before returning. The twin brothers posed for a picture to be used in the illustrated section of the Birmingham News. ___ W.H. Huey, a leading farmer of the Ranburne section of the county was among last week's Heflin visitors. Cleburne friends of Mr. and Mrs. Huey will be glad to know that the latter is recovering from a recent severe attack of pneumonia and that she is now able to be up and about the house. ___ Dr. and Mrs. Dwight Evans who have been living at Henrietta, Okla., for the last few months, have arrived in Heflin for a visit to relatives and friends before going to Tallapoosa to reside. Dr. and Mrs. Evans went out west after leaving Anniston early in the year and their friends will be interested to know that theyare again to reside in this part of the country. They made the trip through the country in their car. ___ GOLD RIDGE News An enjoyable singing service was held Sunday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Sallie Overton. __ H.E. Knowles and family of Ranburne spent Saturday night with W.H. Nolan. __ J.A. Langley and little son Clifton of Macedonia were guests of E.L. Langley on Friday. __ Poley Snow and family spent Sunday with the former's mother, Mrs. Fannie Snow of Ranburne. __ Mr. and Mrs. Horace Huey visited at Macedonia on Sunday. __ Mrs. Minnie Baggett and Misses Marnie and Lillie Baggett attended the funeral of "Uncle" John McLendon on Sunday. __ MRS. SAM WATSON'S DEATH The funeral services of Mrs. Sam Watson, sister of H.A. McMurray of Heflin, were held at the late home near Wadley on Friday, Mr. McMurray havinb been called to that place by the death of the lamented woman. Mrs. Watson was well and favorably known in Cleburne County and the news of her death at the age of 45 years will be received with sorrow. She is survived by her husband and nine children, besides a number of relatives residing in and near Heflin. ____ Married last Wednesday, Mr. Robert O. Atkains and Miss Allie Tom Wright of DeArmanville, the beautiful nuptial ceremony being performed at the home of the bride's parents, Col. and Mrs. D.C. Wright of DeArmanville, by Rev. J.C. Francis of this city. ___ TEAGUE FUNERAL ON SUNDAY The body of Ewell Teague, son of Henry Teague of the Trickum Valley, who was killed last week in Washington City in a car accident, reached Heflin Saturday afternoon and was carried directly to the home of the stricken parents. Funeral services were held from the home of the father on Sunday and the burial occurred at the Wise Chapel Cemetery, many sorrowing friends of the family assembling for the sad occasion. Few of the details of the accident which cost young Teague his life have been received. ____ FORMER CLEBURNE RESIDENT DIES; JOHN McLENDON "Uncle" John McLendon, a former Cleburne county man who has been living at Ingram's Mill near Bowdon, died at his home there late last week at the age of 82 years, the funeral being held at the cemetery there on Sunday. Mr. McLendon was widely known among people in Cleburne county and his death will be generally deplored. ___ MADDOX FAMILY REUNION Mr. and Mrs. E.H. Taylor of Abel recently attended a family reunion at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B.P. Maddox who live near Munford in Talladega County and after their return to their home in this county, have reported one of the most delightful family affairs witnessed by them in many years. At the family reunion held at the Maddox home there were more than fifty members of the immediate family who enjoyed recounts of their younger expereinces and listed to the reminiscences with interest.
