Chandler. ___ Mr. A.W. Birmingham of White Plains died suddenly on Monday morning and was buried in the White Plains cemetery Wednesday, Rev. J.C. Francis, his pastor, conducting the funeral services. ___ Miss Maurice Wright and Mr. H.L. Russell were married on Tuesday at the home of the bride at DeArmanville, Rev. J.C. Francis officiating. ___ Miss Lillye O'Harrow spent last Thursday in Anniston. __ Miss Davis Evans was the guest of her aunt, Mrs. J.A. Lott of Anniston last week. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Thursday, October 23, 1924 MELVIN EDWARDS KILLED BY LEE KETTLE Following is an account of the killing that took place at a point near Newell, just across the line in Randolph county recently in which Melvin Edwards, twenty-odd years old was shot and instantly killed, as given by The Randolph Star: " Melvin Edwards, a young man who resided in the Newell community, was shot and killed Saturday night at the home of Sam Kettle. It is alleged that Lee Kettle, brother to Sam Kettle, fired the shot that killed Edwards. It is reported that young Edwards and Kettle had words about a settlement, the afternoon before the killing. It is reported that Kettle had gone to the home of his brother to spend the night and Edwards went there and demanded a mortgage that Kettle held against him and on Kettle's refusal to hand him the mortgage, he began shooting, firing five shots into the Kettle home. Lee Kettle returned the fire, killing Edwards. Kettle telephoned for the sheriff and gave himself up. He was given a hearing on Monday and allowed a bond of $1000 which he made and was released. Milton Edwards, a brother to the dead man was also brought to jail on a charge of assault to murder and highway robbery. Edwards bond was fixed at $500. Another report that has reached Heflin is to the effect that Kettle, who held a mortgage against Zeb Edwards, father of Melvin and Milton, for around $250. had sold three bales of cotton and had invited the two brothers to his home for a settlement, and it was while at the Kettle home and during the settlement that the trouble started, ending with the death of Melvin Edwards. Melvin Edwards was the son of Zeb Edwards and comes from one of Cleburne's oldest and best known families. _____ FAMILY REUNION H.E. Johnson and other members of the family with their relatives will gather at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Owen, three miles northeast of Heflin, where Grandma Johnson is now visiting and who is entering her 89th year. A great feast will be spread at the Owen home and a treat and good eats are in store for everyone who attends the reunion. ___ Friends of Mr. and Mrs. D.L. Collins of Anniston are receiving the congratulations of their friends over the arrival of a fine boy at their home, 2014 Walnut Ave. Mr. and Mrs. P. Currie, grandparents, are just as happy as mam and dad. ___ Chief of Police Ed Burrow returned to Heflin on Monday afternoon from Piedmont where he went to attend the funeral of his sister, Mrs. Montana Lusk, who died at her home there Sunday at 10 o'clock. Burial took place at Goshen, near Piedmont. Surviving is the husband and 8 children six girls and two boys; four brothers, H.M., P.H., J.W. and Ed Burrow; three sisters, Mrs. Tim Waits, Mrs. M.S. Naugher and Mrs. Jack Callett. Rev. Mr. Howell conducted the funeral services. ____ Jeff Davis spent the weekend with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. R.F. Hooper. __ There was a family reunion at the home of Mrs. C.A. Hooper on Sunday, given in honor of the birthday of her mother, Mrs. Sara Barry. Those enjoying her hospitality were Mrs. Barry and daughters, Lillian and Lucretia of Atlanta; Mrs. J.W. Davis and Messrs. Williams and Mathews of Atlanta. ____ NEWSPAPER issue of Thursday, October 30, 1924 FRUITHURST News Mrs. Hicks and grandsons, Lovell and Heron Walker and Miss Viola Bennett attended the fair in Anniston. __ LOCAL News "Dad" Causby, an inmate of the Pauper's Home, was found dead in bed Tuesday morning. He had been in the home for some time. ___ Mrs. Susie Green spent the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Howell. __ NOTICE FOR PUBLICATION Notice is hereby given that an application for the pardon or parole of Geo. Clarence Brown, convicted and sentenced by the circuit court on the 1st day of Sept. 1924 for the offense of distilling, to the penitentiary for a term of 1 year and 1 day from Cleburne County, Ala., will be made to the Governor of Alabama.
