Haywood, 23, employe of the Building Material & Transfer Co., died early Saturday night at a local infirmary, the accidental victim of a rifle in the hands of Fred Pickard. Mr. Haywood, a truck driver, was sitting at the wheel of an automobile at the rear of the Building Material & Transfer Co. at 611 South 11th Street, when shot. Pickard was standing on the rear veranda of his home shooting at a bird in the yard. The accident occurred at 4:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon. Because of a high board fence surrounding the rear of the Pickard home, the youth is said to have been unable to see into the drive at the rear of the plant, locate directly across the block. Haywood was in the automobile preparing to go home when shot. The bullet from the rifle passed through the fence and the curtain of Haywood's automobile, piercing his brain. He was unconscious when removed a short time later by other employees of the company and taken to Hillman Hospital. Pickard was first to discover that he had shot Haywood and it was he who notified officials of the company of the tragedy. He was released on $500. bond for second degree manslaughter. Although Detectives Hubbard and Riley, investigating the case declared the shooting to be accidental. Coroner J.D. Russum ordered that Pickard be placed under $500. bond for second degree manslaughter, declaring it is a violation of the law to discharge firearms in the city limits. Mr. Haywood, the above named victim in the article, was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Jim W. Haywood of Chulafinnee beat and a nephew of Lee Haywood of Heflin. The remains were brought to Heflin Sunday night and interment was in Liberty Hill cemetery Monday afternoon. Cash of near Fruithurst to stop speeding. Cash, whom is is said was driving a new Ford Coupe, stepped on the gas and waved goodbye at Chief, whereupon the latter cranked up his "Lizzie" and gave instant pursuit, thinking, no doubt, to overtake Cash within a few minutes. But Cash must have decided to give the police a "run for his money", as he was not captured until Oxford Lake was reached, and then only when the pursued followed the road to the lake and could go no further. However the Chief is quoted as saying that he intended to capture Cash if he had to run him to Birmingham. The Chief's car suffered a broken front spring and a puncture during the chase. Tom Prestridge, who was with the Chief, told him while racing down Iron mountain that he wanted to get out and walk, that he had five or six little Tom and Tomlets at home depending on him, but Chief did not stop in his race until DeArmanville was reached and Tom "unloaded" and phoned the police at Oxford to be on watch for two streaks of dust and to stop the foremost. After catching the alleged speeder, he was brought to Heflin and in Mayor's Court Monday had to shell out cash to the tune of $25. and cost for speeding and $10. and costs for an out of date auto tag. ____ CROSS ROADS News We are sorry to report that Mrs. C.E. and E.J.
