A.A. KENT Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Feb. 16 for Mrs. Athie A. Kent, age 86 of Heflin, who died at the residence about 2 a.m. Feb. 15. Services were held from Wise Chapel. Interment was in the church cemetery, Brown- Service of Heflin directing, with the Rev. R.L. Skinner officiating. Surviving are four sons, Will Burns of Atlanta; Bob Burns of Heflin; Luther Burns and John Burns of Montgomery; one brother, H.B. Wise and a sister Mrs. Lelia McElroy, both of Heflin, Route 1. ------- NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, MARCH 13, 1941 DEATHS MRS. FARLOW Mrs. Martha Jane Farlow, age 76 of Muscadine, passed away Feb. 28 in Birmingham. The remains were sent here and funeral services were held at Macedonia on March 2 at 1:30 p.m. by the Rev. Andrew Eason. Interment was in the church cemetery with Brown - Service of Heflin in charge. Mrs. Farlow is survived by five sons, Marvin E. of Alvin, Texas; R.A., Carl, and B.H. of Birmingham; and B.F. of Muscadine; one daughter, Mrs. Mae Dandridge. The sons and grandsons were pallbearers. ------- MRS. NOEL Mrs. Harriett Noel, age 92, of Heflin, passed away at 10:55 a.m. on Feb. 28. Funeral services were held at the Heflin Methodist church at 2 p.m. on March 1 by the Rev. E.C. Johnson. Interment was in the Heflin cemetery with Brown - Service directing. Mrs. Noel is survived by twelve grandchildren; Mrs. J.A. Morris of Heflin; Mrs. Bell Bearden of Blue Mountain; Mrs. Lucile Lumpkin of Delta; Paul, Thomas and Robert Noel of Wellington; B.F. Noel of Columbus, Ga. and Wilmer Noel of Blue Mountain; Mrs. L.E. Barnwell; Fred; J.R. and Miss Gertrude Noel, all of Heflin. The grandsons were pallbearers. ------ MRS. HANSON Mrs. Molly V. Hanson, age 67, passed away March 6 at the residence on Bowdon, Route 3. Funeral services were held March 8 at 10:30 by the Rev. Andrew Eason and the Rev. J.J. Coley. Interment was in Lost Creek cemetery, directed by Brown - Service of Heflin. Mrs. Hanson is survived by three daughters, Mrs. H.M. Barrett of Bowdon; Mrs. G.H. Whitley of Bowdon; Mrs. Claude Lowery of Graham; three sisters, Mrs. Sara Weir of Heflin; Mrs. Mattie White of Hightower and Mrs. Dovie Hanson of Heflin. Hanson Mrs. John Weir -------- MRS. McCORD Mrs. Hester McCord, age 59, died March 4 at Albuquerque, New Mexico. The remains were shipped to Heflin and carried to the residence of her son Talmadge McCord at Newell. Funeral services were held March 9 at 2 p.m. at Morrison's Chapel by Brown-Service of Heflin. Mrs. McCord is survived by her husband Daniel of Albuquerque, New Mexico; her mother Mrs. W.E. Edwards of Heflin; three sons, T.L. of Newell; Earnest and O.C. of Albuquerque; three daughters, Mrs. Eva Camp of Albuquerque; Mrs. Landers McCarley of Woodland and Miss Jeanette McCord of Albuquerque and three sisters, Mrs. Vergie Norton of Heflin; Mrs. Elzie White of Wedowee; Mrs. Pearl Kennedy of Heflin; two brothers, J.L. Edwards of Lineville, Miss., and L.J. Edwards of Cedartown, Ga. -------- MRS. WINFREE Mrs. Jimmie Dink Winfree, age 34, of 211 Live Oak Street, New Smyrna Beach, Fla., passed away March 7 at Daytona Beach. Funeral services were held from Heflin Methodist church on March 9 at 2 p.m. by the Rev. E.C. Johnson and the Rev. Grubbs. Interment was in the Heflin cemetery with Brown - Service in charge. Surviving Mrs. Winfree are the husband George W. Winfree and one daughter Penelope of New Smyrna, Fla., her parents Mr. and Mrs. Benton L. Adams of Heflin; five brothers, V.L., O.P. and J.K. Adams of Birmingham; B.T. and Joe Adams of Delta; three sisters, Mrs. Pauline Haley of Heflin; Miss Sammy Adams of Birmingham and Mrs. M.M. Mandot of Atlanta. Mrs. Winfree was a member of the Methodist church and a graduate of Birmingham Southern. ------- N.J. PESNELL N.J. Pesnell, age 54, passed away March 10 after a long illness. Funeral services were held March 11 at 11 a.m. from Ai church by the Rev. Johnson and Rev. Styles. Interment was in the church cemetery with Brown - Service in charge. Mr. Pesnell spent his whole life on Edwardsville, Route 1. He is survived by three sons, A.A. Pesnell; L.H. Pesnell; W.J. Pesnell, all of Edwardsville, Route1; two stepsons, Theo and Allen Johnson of Anniston; six sisters, Mrs. Laura Tims of Edwardsville; Mrs. Nort Pope of Phoenix City; Mrs. Molly Lambert of Hopewell; Mrs. Annie Smith of Blue Mountain; Mrs. Ella Gaines of Edwardsville, and Mrs. Dosia Beason of Heflin. ------- NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, MARCH 20, 1941 JOHN C. GARNER, 91, CHATHAM'S OLDEST CITIZEN DIES Chatham, Louisiana. Mr. John C. Garner, 91 years of age, affectionately known by his many friends of Chatham and surrounding territory as "Grandpa" Garner, died at his home in Chatham on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 1940 at 7:11 a.m. following a very brief illness. Mr. Garner was born in Coweta County, Georgia on May 27, 1849. He was married to Miss Jane Denman of Bell Mills, Alabama on Sept. 18, 1873 at which place their made their home. Mr. and Mrs. Garner moved to Louisiana in 1888 and have made their home in Jackson Parish for the past 51 years. Mrs. Garner, better known as "Grandma" Garner, passed away at her home on Sept. 18 of this year, which was their 67th wedding anniversary. Of the ten children born to Mr. and Mrs. Garner, the following survive: Three sons, J.F., L.B. and A.D. Garner, all of Chatham, La. Four daughters, Mrs. James McCormack, and Miss Lois Garner of Chatham; Mrs. E.J. Haley of Jonesboro and Mrs. Edgar M. Barnes of Pasadena, Texas. HARPER Alexander Davis Harper, 79 year old resident of Heflin, Route 2, passed away around 5:30 Monday a.m. at his home. Funeral services were held from Evans Chapel at 2 p.m. Tuesday by the Rev. E.C. Johnson and Rev. T.D. Stovall. Interment was in the church cemetery with Brown - Service in charge. The grandsons acted as pallbearers. Mr. Harper was a pioneer resident of Cleburne county and was a member of the Congregational Methodist church for many years. He is survived by his widow, two sons, J.A. and Reuben; and five daughters, Mrs. J.W. Bennett; Mrs. Canie Brooks; Mrs. Leda Holly and Mrs. Maude Bradberry of Heflin, and Mrs. Meda Baber of Randlett, Okla. ------ W.R. OWEN Funeral services were conducted on March 14 at 2 p.m. from the Edwardsville Baptist church for W.R. (Bob) Owen, age 39. The Rev. W.M. Barr officiated. Interment was in Edwardsville cemetery with Brown - Service directing. Mr. Owen is survived by one brother, Claude Owen of Edwardsville; and one sister, Mrs. zether Harris of Fruithurst. ------ JOE BUCHANAN Joe Buchanan, age 86, passed away March 21 after a short illness. Funeral services were held March 22 at 2 p.m. from Camp Ground Church near Graham by the Rev. Mr. Caldwell. Interment was in the church cemetery with Brown - Service of Heflin directing. Mr. Buchanan is survived by four sons, J.W. of Haleyville; R.D. of Bowdon, Ga., E.J. of Bowdon, Ga., and C.C. of Hogansville, Ga., two daughters, Mrs. M.E. Noles of LaGrange, Ga., and Miss Claudia Buchanan of Graham. The grandsons were pallbearers. ------- J.W. THOMPSON J.W. Thompson, age 82, died last Thursday morning at his home at Oxford, Route 2. Surviving Mr. Thompson are five sons, Homer and Pearnol ? of Heflin; Clint of Atlanta, Texas; Rodney of Atlanta, Ga., and Oliver of Bowdon, Ga., and six daughters, Mrs. H.N. Morrow and Mrs. J.T. Wade of Heflin; Mrs. J.H. Howell of Oxford; Mrs. E.E. Ingram of Wedowee; and Mrs. J.C. Cline of Enos, Texas.
