Doster of Birmingham passed away June 3. Funeral services were held at Buchanan on Thursday, June 5. She was a niece of Mrs. C.W. Griffin of Heflin. Three sons survive her, Roy, George and Howard, all of Birmingham and a daughter Mrs. Eldridge Walker of Cullman. She resided in Heflin with Mrs. Griffin for several months. ------ IN MEMORY In memory of my dear brother Ray Snow who died June 15, 1935. His sister, Dana Sue Benefield Hopewell, Ala. --------- LOCAL News Mr. and Mrs. Benson Crews ( Lyria Vaughn) of Macon spent several days with her mother Mrs. Arlin Vaughn. ---- NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, JUNE 19, 1941 YATES IS PROMOTED TO ARMY CORPORAL Fort Benning, Ga. The promotion of Pvt. Vernon H. Yates, son of Mrs. Ann Yates of Heflin, to the grade of Corporal has been announced in orders issued in the 4th Division Motorized. Corporal Yates is assigned to the 22nd Infantry, Company "M". Military authorities stated that his promotion is based on his soldierly qualities and attention to duty. The 4th Division commanded by Maj. Gen. Loyd R. Fredendall is the only completely motorized division in the U.S. Army. ------ CLEBURNE BOYS ARE TRANSFERRED TO COAST According the the reception center at Fort McPherson, Ga., Grady L. Waits and Marcus R. Turner have been assigned to Coast Artillery Training Center at Camp Callan, California. ------ CLEBURNE CITIZEN DIES IN OKLAHOMA Anniston, Ala. June 15 R.L. Evans, 68, an important figure in the development of Cleburne county, and the father of Dr. Dwight L. Evans of Anniston, died Friday night in Hugo, Okla. where he had practiced law since 1908. Born near Heflin in 1873, Evans was instrumental in the movement started in 1906 for moving Cleburne county's seat from Edwardsville where it had been since 1866, to Heflin. When the action was completed, he acted as an attorney assisting in the foundation of the new county government. He moved to Oklahoma in 1908. Evans was educated at Edwardsville Seminary, a private institution from which he graduated with an A.B. degree in 1894, and at Tuscaloosa Alabama Law School where in 1896 he received his LLB degree. He is survived by his widow; three daughters, Mrs. Millard Massey and Mrs. Floyd McDonald of Los Angeles, Calif. and Mrs. J.D. Jacks of Hugo, Okla; four sons, Noel Evans of Houston, Texas; Vincent Evans of Baker, Montana; Ralph Evans of Mount Vernon, Washington, and Dr. Dwight L. Evans of Anniston; one brother, H.M. Evans of Hugo, Okla., and three sisters, Mrs. J.R. Howle of Oxford, Miss., Mrs. J.A. Harper and Mrs. J.O. Tollison of Heflin. ----- FUNERAL SERVICES FOR F.P. MORGAN Friends here learned of the death Sunday in Montgomery of Frank Perryman Morgan, 58, who for many years had been a member of the Alabama Public Service Commission and was widely known for his pioneer campaigning for equalization of freight rates. He died at his residence, 4 Gilmer Ave., Montgomery, after an illness of two and a half years. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lila Bass Morgan; a daughter Juliet Morgan; two sisters, Miss Bessie Morgan of Birmingham and Miss Roberta M. Morgan of Washington, D.C.; five brothers, Dr. Ralph M. Morgan of Birmingham; J.A. and H.G. Morgan of Anniston; Neal M. Morgan of Heflin and Maj. A.C. Morgan of Ft. Benning, Ga., and four aunts, Mrs. James R. Little of Atlanta; Miss Harriet Perryman, Miss Ella Perryman and Mrs. D.D. Perryman of Heflin. Funeral services were held on Monday at Memory Chapel in Montgomery. ----- NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, JUNE 26, 1941 LOCAL News Mr. and Mrs. Earl Cook of Tampa, Fla. visited the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Grady W. Cook of Bell's Mill last week. ---- J.A. BATCHELOR CELEBRATES SEVENTY-FOURTH BIRTHDAY On June 15, Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Batchelor and family enjoyed his 74th birthday on Father's Day. The room was decorated with sweet flowers and the table was filled with lots of good things to eat. The family was very happy to be together again. AMANDA PRICHARD On March 27, 1941 the death angel made another visit to this earth and chose as its victim, Mrs. Amanda Prichard. Our hearts were made sad by her going. She has left a vacant place in the home and community that no one else can fill. Grandmother was always kind and patient, and understanding. She had a kind word for everyone. And cheerfully helped those who needed help. We should not wish grandmother to be back in this world of troubles and trials, for she is now at rest with God where suffering, pain and sorrow comes no more. She cannot come back to us but we can go to her if we will live the kind of life Jesus would have us to live. JULIA ANN BARKER Funeral services were held Sunday, July 6 at 5 p.m. from Antioch church for Mrs. Julia Ann Barker. Mrs. Barker passed away July 3 at the residence of a daughter in Huntingdon, Tenn. Mrs. Barker was 79 years of age and had been in ill health for several years. She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Nellie Nix of Whitman, West Va., Mrs. Anne Pirkle of Heflin; Mrs. Vida Williamson of Huntingdon, Tenn., and Mrs. Ollie Harris of Detroit, Mich.; eight sons, Arthur Guyton of Atlanta, Ga.; Drew Barker of Dallas, Texas; Dr. Hiram Barker of Alexandria, La., Abia Barker of Fort Worth, Texas; Ziska Barker of Sherman, Texas; Costa Barker of Washington, D.C., Wyss Barker of Charlotte, N.C., Marcus Barker of Birmingham; one stepson, Henry Barker of Haleyville; four brothers, John, George, Albert and Jasper Tomlin, all of Atlanta, Ga. The sons served as pallbearers. Rev. Roy Niager of Atlanta, Rev. W.M. Barr of Bell Mills and Rev. E.C. Johnson of Heflin conducted the services. Interment was in the Antioch cemetery with Brown - Service in charge. ------ FRUITHURST News Mrs. J.W. Ethridge is spending a week with her daughter Mrs. Arthur Bazemore in Chattanooga, Tennessee. ---- NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, JULY 17, 1941 DEATHS JOHN L. NEWELL John L. Newell, 69, of Hopewell, Route 1, died suddenly Thursday, July 10 at 7:30 a.m. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Antioch church with the Rev. R.L. Skinner and Rev. E.C. Johnson in charge and burial was in the church cemetery, directed by Brown - Service of Heflin. Mr. Newell, who lived near Hopewell for 45 years, was a member of the Baptist church there. He is survived by his wife; three sons, Herbert of Hopewell; Clois of Heflin; and Howle of Fruithurst; two daughters, Mrs. Lois Jacobs of Greensboro and Mrs. Una Thresher of Muscadine; and one sister, Mrs. Anna Walker of Ambrosia, Ga. Pallbearers were Howle, Herbert and Clois Newell; Homer Jacobs, Talmage Thrasher and Arvil Turner. ------ WILLIAM W. BROWN William Wiley Brown, age 71, of Heflin, died Friday, July 11 after an illness of several months. Funeral services were held Sunday, July 13 at Cane Creek church at 2 p.m. with Rev. Robinson officiating, directed by Brown - Service of Heflin. Mr. Brown is survived by his wife; two sons, two daughters, and two brothers. Pallbearers were Welcome Brown, Clellan Wheeler, Arthur Durham, LeRoy Brown, Curtis Pitts and Floyd Coggins. ------ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, JULY 24, 1941 EDWARDSVILLE CHILD HIT & KILLED BY BUS Carol Claudette Pilgrim, five year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Pilgrim of Edwardsville, was killed instantly Sunday afternoon shortly before 4 o'clock when she was struck by a Greyhound bus on the Atlanta highway, five and one half miles east of Heflin. The young girl was walking down the highway with her grandfather Charles B. Wike when she suddenly darted across the road directly into the path of the bus. Investigators termed the accident unavoidable and no charged were made against the bus driver. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Edwardsville Methodist church at 4 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. H.R. Carter. Interment was in the Edwardsville cemetery with Brown - Service of Heflin in charge. Besides her parents and grandfather Mr. Wike, the child is survived by a brother Wayne Pilgrim, and grandparents Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Pilgrim, all of Edwardsville. ------ MRS. J.H. SMITH REUNION A family reunion and birthday dinner was given by W.C. Warren the third Sunday in July, celebrating four children's birthdays that were present. Warren and family -------- COX REUNION The annual Cox reunion was held Sunday, July 20 at the home and on the birthday of W.H. Cox. He was 77 years old, very lively and happy. Granddad has five daughters, three boys, 25 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. All were present except one child and one grandchild. The children and a host of friends met at 9 o'clock with well filled baskets and greeted granddad with birthday gifts that he was very pleased with. After a delicious dinner the afternoon was spent in game playing, singing and many things that the day will be long remembered for. Everyone enjoyed the day very much. The family and a host of friends left, wishing granddad many more happy birthdays. A niece ------ DEATHS HENRY MACK HOWLE PASSES AT RESIDENCE Henry Mack Howle, 80 of Heflin, Route 1, died Wednesday morning, July 16 at 1:50 a.m. Funeral services were held at Cedar Creek Baptist church, Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the Rev. H.R. Carter, Rev. E.F. Daniel, Rev. H. B. Loftin, Rev. J.E. Stauffer and Rev. Epsy in charge. Burial was in the church cemetery, directed by Brown - Service of Heflin. Mr. Howle had lived in Cleburne all his life and was a member of the Batist church for 64 years. He is survived by his wife, two sons, Grover of Heflin and Herbert of Fort Benning, Ga; seven daughters, Mrs. Inus Daniel of Newell; Mrs. Emmie Brown of Buchanan, Ga., Mrs. Izora Waldrop of Birmingham; Mrs. Lola Morrison of Heflin; Mrs. Henrietta Moore of Anniston and Mrs. Vessie Payne of Heflin. Pallbearers were John Daniel, Ralph Campbell, Herman Morrison, H.E. Waldrop, Martis Howle and Orlan Harlan. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Cedar Creek Baptist church. Flower girls were Imagene Morrison, Eileen Morrison, Ruby Nell Morrison, Charlie Jean Payne, Mariynn Moore, Louise Daniel, Nellie Daniel, Louise Howle, Exa Howle, Lillie Ross, Vernelle Harlan and Ezma Harlan. ------- MISS DELICH SHADWICK Funeral services wree conducted July 3 at 10:30 a.m. from Harmony church for Miss Delich Shadwick, age 86. The Rev. Will Denny officiated. Interment was in the church cemetery with Brown - Service directing. She has been a member of the Primitive Baptist church for 40 years. Miss Shadwick is the last of four children of the late Alec Shadwick. ------ JOHN W. BAIN John William Bain, 80 year old resident of Heflin, Route 1, passed away about 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 16 at his home. Funeral services were held from Morrison's Chapel at 4 p.m. Thursday by Rev. Bean and Pashal. Interment was in the church cemetery with Brown - Service in charge. The grandsons acted as pallbearers. He is survived by his wife, one son, W.J. Bain of Wedowee, Route 1; one daughter, Miss Mary Etta Bain of Heflin; one brother, J.R. Bain of Heflin; and a sister Mrs. Lee Lewis of Wehadkee. ------ WILLIAM RICHARD PULLEY William Richard Pulley, 23, of Fruithurst, who was returning home from Bremen, Ga. was seriously injured in an automobile accident on the Bankhead highway, just outside of Fruithurst, on Wednesday, July 9th about 11 o'clock and died at 5 o'clock Thursday morning in a Bremen, Ga. hospital where he was taken. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at Fruithurst Baptist church with Rev. J.P. McDurmont and Rev. H.R. Carter officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery. Mr. Pulley was born in Heflin on July 28, 1917 and died July 10, 1941. He had made his home in Fruithurst with his parents for the past 10 years and was an active member of the Epworth League at the Methodist church and had a host of friends who with his family, mourn his passing. To know Dick, was to love him; he always had a smile for those he met. He is survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Pulley; five sisters, Mrs. J.L.
