"Buddy" Taylor Jr. of Camp Stewart, Ga., son of Mr. and Mrs. S.L. Taylor, spent the holidays with them. ---- Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Christian and son of Clarksville, Tenn. spent the holidays with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Branham. ---- Burt Carlson, one of our most exemplary young men, has gone into service for Uncle Sam. Burt is liked by everyone here and we wish him the best. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. E.R. Carlson and well known in the county. He is the first of our young men from Fruithurst to join the Aviation Service. ---- Arthur Bazemore Jr., grandson of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Ethridge, who made a host of friends during his short stay in Fruithurst as bookeeper for Lewis Lumber Co., returned to his home in Chattanooga, Tenn., where he volunteered to serve his county. He is now being sent to the West coast. ---- LOCAL News Mr. and Mrs. Bill Fuller and children of Birmingham have been visiting her mother, Mrs. Amelia Osborne. ---- Wellborn Thrower who is in the Navy and stationed at Norfolk, Virginia, has been visiting relatives and friends in Cleburne county. ---- Mr. and Mrs. Tom Allen Jr. spent Christmas in Blaine, Tennessee with his parents. They were accompanied home by his mother. ---- Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Owen and children of Anniston, with Mrs. Idus Nixon (Ruth Kitchens) have been here for several days the guest of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Kitchens. ---- Miss Y.Z. Harlan of Atlanta came home for the Christmas season to be with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Harlan. ---- NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, JANUARY 8, 1942 SILAS J. MOODY DIES AT TALLAPOOSA HOME Silas Jefferson Moody, age 69, died early Saturday morning at his home in Tallapoosa, Ga., just across the state line from Heflin, Ala., following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the FIrst Baptist church in Tallapoosa, Jones of Anniston directing burial in the Buchanan Cemetery. Surviving are the widow and two sons, Paul Moody of Fruithurst, Ala. and Douglas Moody of Los Angeles, California; one daughter, Mrs. Virginia Butler of Tallapoosa, Ga., and two sisters, Mrs. Martha White of Atlanta and Mrs. Flora Goodman of Gadsden. ------ FINAL RITES HELD FOR MRS. W.K. BROWN Funeral services were held Saturday morning at 11 o'clock at the Macedonia Baptist church for Mrs. Willie Kate Brown, age 50. Mrs. Brown died Thursday morning at her home in Heflin, Route 3, after having been ill about a year. Officiating at the services was the Rev. J.A. Eason. Boozer conducted the burial in the church cemetery. Surviving are three sons, W.H. Brown of Spartanburg, S.C., Jim and Paul Brown of Heflin; four daughters, Mrs. Clemmie Opwell of Bowdon, Ga., Mrs. Estelle Bryant of Muscadine, Misses Mary and Navy Brown, both of Heflin. ----- FINAL PARRIS SERVICES HELD LAST THURSDAY Services were held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the New Harmony church near Heflin, for Oliver Paris, age 29. The Rev. H.R. Carter officiated and Boozer directed burial in the church cemetery. Parris was killed Tuesday morning of last week when he fell from a logging truck and one of the rear wheels crushed his chest. He died while enroute to an Anniston hospital. The accident occurred near Liberty School, Heflin, Route 3. Mr. Parris is survived by his wife and two children, James and Mary Nell of Heflin, Route 3; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lige Parris of Heflin, Route 1; four brothers, Virgil of Cleburne county, John of Wedowee and Arthur and Grady of Jacksonville; and five sisters, Mrs. Clarence Moore, Nellie, Nancy Jane, Thelma and Nannie Viola Parris, all of Heflin, Route 1. ------ LOCAL News Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Moore and children have moved to Roanoke. Mr. Moore is employed by the Knox Stave Corp. of Columbus, Miss. ---- James Denman, who is in the Navy and stationed in Washington, D.C. has been visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.A. Denman. ---- Families of Lt. Tom Campbell and Lt. Carl Merrill of Heflin and Pvt. Guy Turner of Beason Mills have been notified that they are safe in Hawaii. ----- Robert Jones who is stationed on an aircraft carrier, left Monday to his ship after a short visit to his parents here, Mr. and Mrs. Homer Jones. ----- NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, JANUARY 15, 1942 LOCAL News Mrs. Rhodes Robinson has returned from Boston, Mass., where she visited her two sons, Bill and Earl who are in the U.S. Navy. The boys are fine and say we are doing a good job whipping the Japanese in the war. ----- Miss Mattie Lou Rollins of Bremen, Ga. spent the weekend with her mother, Mrs. Arthur Vaughan. ---- Mrs. Lois McMahan who has been at the bedside of her mother Mrs. W.J. Taylor of Morrow, Ga. has returned to her home in Hopewell. ---- Fred W. Thrash has received his orders to report January 22 to the Naval Reserve Midshipman Training school at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. ---- Friends of Jack Norton will regret to learn that he continues quite ill at his home south of Heflin. Thomas Rhodes. ---- Mr. and Mrs. Posey Tolleson and daughter have moved to Talladega. ---- Mr. and Mrs. Willis Lee Whiten of Aniston spent the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.D. Whiten. ---- Mrs. Watson Cook of Anniston is visiting her parents, Judge and Mrs. Toliver Beason. ---- DEATHS JAMES LAURANCE MURRAY Jimmie Murray, age 19, passed away at his residence in Heflin, Route 3, on January 1. Funeral services were held at Pleasant Hill church Jan. 3 by the Rev. E.A. Riddle. Interment was in the church cemetery directed by Brown - Service of Heflin. Jimmie is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Murray of Heflin, Route 3; one brother, William A. of Fort Bliss, Texas and one sister, Mrs. Mary Jane Thompson of Heflin, Route 1. ----- MRS. M.I. VANCURON Mrs. Matilda Vancuron of Fruithurst, passed away at her residence Jan. 16 at the age of 85. She is survived by three sons, J.M., Charlie and W.H. of Fruithurst; two daughters, Mrs. Alice Wood of Bremen, Ga., and Mrs. Minnie Dean of Fruithurst. Funeral services were held Jan. 18 from the Upper Cane Creek cemetery by Rev. Ed Day. Interment was in the cemetery adjoining, with Brown-Service of Heflin directing. ------ WILLIAM B. LAMBERT W.B. Lambert, age 58 of Tallapoosa, Ga., passed away Jan. 19 at a Bremen, Ga. hospital, from injuries sustained in an auto accident three miles east of Tallapoosa. Mr. Lambert is survived by his widow and a daughter, Mrs. George Edge of Gadsden, one son, James Lambert of Tallapoosa and a sister, Mrs. Nancy Beck of Huntsville. Funeral services were held Jan. 20 from the Riverside church by Rev. Taylor Wright. Interment followed in the church cemetery with Brown-Service of Heflin in charge. Pallbearers were Otis Smith, Arthur Jackson, Arthur Bentley, Frank Sanders, J.B. Hart and Robert Jackson. ----- MRS. SARA LOU HARRIS Funeral services were held Jan. 20 at 1 p.m. from Antioch church for Mrs. Sara Lou Harris. Brown-Service was in charge of the arrangements. Mrs. Harris was 80 years of age and had lived in Muscadine for 21 years. She is survived by three sons, Dow Harris of Birmingham; Crandel of Ayer, Mass. and Hoyt of Muscadine; two daughters, Mrs. Chris Douglar of Sumiton and Mrs. Wiley Dodd of Muscadine; one sister, Mrs. Nancy Denman of Tallapoosa, Ga. ------ MRS. MATTIE E. BLAKE Mrs. Mattie Blake, age 82, passed away Jan. 21 at the residence of her son, F.L. Blake on Heflin, Route 3. Mrs. Blake was born in Heard county, Georgia but moved to Chambers county at an early age. She moved to Beat 11 at the age of 18 and had lived there since that time. She was a member of the Micaville Baptist church. Surviving Mrs. Blake are one son, F.L. of Heflin, Route 3; seven daughters, Mrs. Lancy Roberts and Mrs. Lessie Wright of Boaz; Mrs. Lula Fowler of East Point, Ga., Mrs. Lena Hearn of Palmetto, Ga., Mrs. Allie Seabrooks of Washington, D.C., Mrs. Etta Brown of Lineville, and Mrs. Arrie Conley of Birmingham. Funeral services weer held Jan. 20 (?) at 2:30 p.m. from Micaville church by the Rev. T.D. Stovall. Interment was in the Blake Cemetery with Brown - Service in charge. Pallbearers were Ervin Turner, Jeff Howle, Otus Harlan, Martis Howle, Mitchell Blake and John Lewis Atkins. ------ DANIEL E. WHITE Dan White, age 63 of Heflin, Route 2, passed away Jan. 24. Funeral services were held Monday at 11 a.m. from the Pine Grove church by the Rev. R. Skinner. Interment was in the church cemetery, directed by Brown - Service. Mr. White is survived by his wife; his mother and father Mr. and Mrs. Carter White of Hopewell, Route 1; five sons, Arlin, Lander, Marvin of Heflin; Ocie of Bell Mills and Inman of Heflin, Route 2; four daughters, Miss Lilly White of Heflin; Mrs. Eula Owens of Heflin; Mrs. Dessie Brooks and Mrs. Clayton Edwards of Heflin; three brothers, Alvin and J.C. of Hopewell and J.A. of Heflin; two sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Walker of Huntsville and Mrs. Emma Jordan of Valdosta, Ga.
