Mrs. Harris's mother Mrs. J.W. Bishop of Lineville returned with them to spend a month. ---- Mrs. St. Clair Bower and young son Calvin of Welsh, La. are visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Whiten. ---- Mr. and Mrs. Joe Barringer left Tuesday morning for Dallas, Texas. Mrs. Roy Prestridge (Luther ? Mae Moore) accompanied them as far as Dallas where she will go to see her husband Roy Prestridge where he's in camp there. ----- NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, FEBRUARY 12, 1942 DEATHS MRS. BESSIE MAE PHILLIPS Funeral services were held January 30th at 11 a.m. from the Tallapoosa Methodist church for Mrs. Bessie Mae McDonald Phillips. The services were conducted by the Revs. Ralph Hawkins, R.O. Flinn, Thomas Epsy and O.N. Todd. Mrs. Phillips passed away at her residence at 7:25 p.m. January 28th, after an illness of several months. She was a member and a steward of the First Methodist church of Tallapoosa and also a member of the D.A.R. and W.C.T.U. She was 56 years of age and took a very active part in church and civic life in Tallapoosa. She is survived by her husband B.A. Phillips of Tallapoosa, four sons, B.F. of New York City; Raymond McDonald and Clem Hester of Arlington, Va., and Joseph Jackson of Sylacauga; one daughter, Mrs. Ruth Murvin of Tallapoosa; three brothers, S.P. McDonald of Tallapoosa; F.M. and J.J. McDonald of Sylacauga. Pallbearers were Sterling and James McDonald, John D. Griffin, Howard and Lester Garrett and Ed Jordan Jr. After the service in Tallapoosa, the procession left for Sylacauga where a graveside service was held followed by interment in the Marble City cemetery. Brown-Service of Heflin was in charge of arrangements. ------ LOCAL News Mr. and Mrs. Albert Kaylor (Annie Pearl Owens) and young son of Millersville, were visiting friends and relatives here last week. ----- PROMOTED TO SERGEANT Camp Polk, La. Feb. 3 Corp. Oliver B. Hayes of Co. H, 36th Armored Infantry Regt. of the 3rd Armored Division (Bayou Blitz) has been promoted to Sergeant, it was anounced today by Col. W.L. Roberts, commanding the 36th Armored Infantry Regt. Sgt. Hayes is the son of Bud Hayes of Heflin, Alabama. The 3rd Armored Division, one of Uncle Sam'e panzer units, is commanded by Brigadier General Walton H. Walker. ----- NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, FEBRUARY 19, 1942 DEATHS MRS. EMMA WADE Funeral services for Mrs. Emma Wade, age 74, were held at Lost Creek Baptist church on February 9 with the Revs. Burson and Eason officiating. Mrs. Wade had been in ill health for several years. She was a member of the Primitive Baptist church. She is survived by her husband J.H. Wade, four daughters, Mrs. Ida Stewart of Marietta, Ga., Mrs. R.B. Young of Hightower; Mrs. Lou Johnson of Heflin, and Mrs. Jessie Farmer of Ranburne; three sisters, Mrs. Julie Cavender of Heflin; Mrs. Tealey Whitley of Franklin, Ga., Mrs. Ida Ashley of Birmingham. Mrs. Wade had 27 living and four deceased grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. ------- W.W. VAUGHAN Funeral services for W.W. Vaughan, age 65, native of Cleburne county and a long time resident of Birmingham, who died in a Detroit hospital on Wednesday, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Brown - Service Norwood Chapel. The Rev. E.S. Butterly, pastor, Lake Highlands Methodist church, officiated. Mr. Vaughan was for many years an employee of the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Company. Surviving are two sons, Robert Vaughan and Major Vaughan, both of Detroit; four brothers, Amos Vaughan of Anniston; James Vaughan of Tennessee; Robert Vaughan and Ben Vaughan, both of Iron City; four sisters, Mrs. Dealy Evans and Mrs. Reuben Harper of Heflin; Mrs. Tom Goodwin of Alexander City; and Mrs. Lucinda Bryant of Anniston. Burial was in Elmwood. ----- C.K. HOGAN Chas. K. Hogan, age 58, of Iron City, Tennessee, passed away at his residence in Iron City, Thursday afternoon, Feb. 5. He is survived by his wife Mrs. Leona Hogan, four sons and one daughter. Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. at the Methodist church near his home. Moody. ---- NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, MARCH 5, 1942 DEATHS JAMES W. NORTON Funeral services for James W. Norton, age 82, were held at Antioch church on Thursday, Feb. 17 with Revs. Skinner, Pritchard and Brasher officiating, Brown- Service directing. Pallbearers were J.T. Beason, W.I. Owen, Fred McMurray, Grady Boyd, Russell Beason and W.A. Prestridge. Mr. Norton had been sick only a short time at the time of his death. He was a member of the Methodist church. He is survived by four sons, Ellis, Arthur, Cecil and Will, and 19 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He was born in Randolph county but moved to Cleburne county when quite a small boy and spent the remainder of his life in this county. Lamb (Othine Sprayberry) are visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Sprayberry. ---- Mrs. "Zeke" Owens and children of Anniston have been visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Kitchens. ---- NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, MARCH 19, 1942 DEATHS PERRY H. DENNIS Funeral services for Perry H. Dennis were held at Cedar Creek Baptist church on March 8. He passed away Friday night, March 6 at 11:25. He had been in ill health for some time. He was 74 years, 9 months and 5 days. He was a member of Cedar Creek Baptist church. He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Bertha Williamson of Heflin, Rt. 3, and Mrs. Mary Etta Craft of Heflin; three sons, Lee of Birmingham; Willie of Heflin, and Jasper of Heflin; two sisters and two brothers and 12 grandchildren. Pallbearers were Russell Lumpkin, Jimmie Tuggle, Herman Morrison, Henry Holcomb, Jack Mack Campbell and Alton Fortner. ------- NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, MARCH 26, 1942 MEN AGE 45 to 64 MUST REGISTER APRIL 27 for POSSIBLE DRAFT CALL The government THursday ordered the oldest group of men under the slective service law, ages 45 to 64 to register on April 27 for possible noncombatant service in the future. While none of these comparative oldsters will be taken into the fighting forces, thee is the possibility that some or many of them will be assigned eventually to essential war work. ------- LOCAL News Mrs. D.W. Lysett of Utica, Michigan is vistiing in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Robert C. Rehner. ---- Clellon Thrower who is in the parachute troops and stationed at Fort Benning, Ga. is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harbon Thrower. ------ Mr. and Mrs. H.P. Roberds and children have moved to Sylacauga where Mr. Roberds is connected with the Dupont Powder Works. ---- Miss Eunice Norton who was formerly employed at the Greyhound Bus Station here has accepted a position at Wood Drug Company. ---- Mr. and Mrs. Martin Vaughan of Atlanta, Georgia spent the weekend here with relatives and friends. ---- Mrs. O.A. Stamps of Hightower announced the marriage of their daughter Brooksie Stewart to Mr. John R. Otwell of Camp Polk, La. on Sunday. The Rev. C.T.
