August 2 Mildred Clifton, age 16, her mother and an older sister came near death or serious injury on Friday night when lightning struck their home on Delta, Route 1. Their injuries were said to be slight but all three suffered from shock over their experience. She was treated at Garner Hospital for small cuts to her mouth. The mother and sister also came along, but their names were not recorded at the hospital. A bolt of lightning struck the house and ripped away some of the boards in the room where the trio was. They were knocked to the floor, hospital attendants were told. ------- NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, AUGUST 13, 1942 LOCAL News Mrs. Bert Parlier and two daughters of Jonesboro, Georgia, Mrs. Ruth McCulley and aunt of Spring City, Tennessee, are visiting their mother Mrs. A.J. Baber. ---- NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, AUGUST 20, 1942 HEFLIN NEGRO SHOT IN CHEST James Banks, 23 year old Heflin negro, who was carried to an Anniston hospital Sunday evening, died Sunday night about 11 o'clock from a gunshot wound to the chest. ----- IN MEMORY OF REBA JOHNSON SEWELL In loving memory of Reba (Johnson) Sewell, who passed away eight months ago. Holland and family in Tifton, Ga. ----- NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, SEPTEMBER 3, 1942 LOCAL News Friends of Raymond Davis will be interested to know that he is now in the U.S. Army Air Corps, stationed at St. Petersburg, Fla. ---- Mrs. Gaines Smith (Mildred Davis) has returned to her home in Norfolk, Va. after spending two weeks with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Davis at Hopewell. ----- Mrs. D.D. Perryman is visiting her sister Mrs. Benjamin Esley in Greenville, S.C. for a stay of two weeks. ----- NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, SEPTEMBER 10, 1942 BEN PARKER FAMILY REUNION The annual reunion of the descendants of the late Ben Parker was held at the home of Doss Parker on Terrapin Creek, near Oak Level, last Sunday, with about one hundred in attendance. J.M. Wood of Jacksonville and Bill Alec Moore, Mayor of Pin Hook, were the principal speakers and since they were there, it goes without saying that competition in both speaking and eating was keen. Mr. Wood admits that he simply couldn't hold Mr. Moore a light at the tables, but says that he positively will not admit anything like that in connection with the speaking. He says that he has attends lots of fine picnics in his day and has observed some magnificent food consumders, but that he has never witnessed anything to compare with the eating of Bill Alec Moore on this occasion. The tables were groaning with pies, cakes, biscuits, chicken, ham and almost every imaginable that's good to eat, and it is said that Bill Alec lead the procession to the tables, worked harder than anyone else there, and was the last to leave. All in all, the occasion was a most enjoyable one and everyone is already looking foward to the next one. Mr. Wood was chosen as the speaker for next year. Funeral services were held at Upper Cane Creek on Sunday by the Rev. W.M. Barr. Interment was in the church cemetery with Brown - Service directing. Mrs. Bennett is survived by one son, William Russell Bennett of Oxford, and one sister, Mrs. Jessie Warren of Edwardsville; also seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Russell Bennett Jr., James Cash, Earnest Henry, Duston Junior, Hester Bennett, J.W. Bennett. ------- KERR Benjamin D. Kerr, age 72 of Edwardsville, passed away at his residence Sept. 4. Funeral services were held by the Elder Ira Patty from Mars Hill on Sunday. Interment was in the church cemetery with Brown - Service in charge. Mr. Kerr is survived by six sons, Henry of Blue Mountain; John of Muscadine; Robert of Bowdon, Ga., Leonard, Virgil and Joe of Edwardsville; seven daughters, Mrs. Bertha Edwards and Miss Caroline Kerr of Edwardsville; Mrs. Cumy Edwards of Holly Pond; Mrs. Ida Edwards and Mrs. Mattie Huey of Edwardsville; Mrs. Ethel Vines of Buchanan, Ga. and Mrs. Luna Vines of Temple, Ga. and also one brother and two sisters. Mr. Kerr's sons served as pallbearers. ------- CROOK Funeral services were held Sept. 1 at three o'clock p.m. from Lecta church for Mrs. Gertrude Howle Crook of Heflin, Route 2. Dr. A.H. Neighbors and Harmon D. Moore conducte dthe service and interment was directed by Brown - Service. Mrs. Crook, age 48, had been in ill health for several months. She is survived by her husband, J. Lewis Crook; three daughters, Mrs. Mary Ellen Truett of Lanett; Mrs. Edith Banks and Miss Heaton Crook of Heflin; also five brothers and six sisters. Mrs. Crook's brothers and brother-in-law E.J. Crook served as pallbearers. ------- EVANS Mrs. Eda Warren Evans, age 79, passed away at the residence of her brother J.W. Warren, on Aug. 25. Funeral services were held from the Happy Hill church on Aug. 27 by the Elder Ira Patty and T.D. Stovall. Interment was in Evans Chapel cemetery with Brown - Service directing. Mrs. Evans is survived by three brothers, J.W. and Jesse Warren of Edwardsville and Stephen of Blue Mountain; one sister, Mrs. Rebecca Francis Hale of Heflin. Pallbearers were Chester, Preston, Virgil, Hazzie, Alta and A.G. Warren. ------- VISE Lula Samantha Vise, age 68, passed away Aug. 21 at her residence on Heflin, Route 1. Funeral services were held at Jordan's Chapel on Aug. 23 by the Rev. T.D. Stovall and interment was in the church cemetery with Brown - Service in charge. Mrs. Vise is survived by her husband J.A. Vise, six daughters, Mrs. Lilly Hanvey; Mrs. Ellen Reaves; Mrs. Flora Lambert; Mrs. Ruth Barnes; Mrs. Unalee Mase and Mrs. Robert Communs and one son, Laughton Haynes. Pallbearers were Amos Vise, Jeff Lavender, Troy Mays, Chester Hanson, John Hanvey, and Hugh Dashmore. ----- R.L. CHANDLER DIES Ft. Worth, Texas Robert L. Chandler, 68, notel operator here for 38 years and one time night manager of the Hotel Texas Coffee Shop, died at his home, 110 1/2 East Second Street, on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. Mr. Chandler, who for 10 years had operated the hotel at the East Second street address, operated the hotel that bore his name at 107 East Exchange Avenue from 1907 to 1925 and was widely known among cattle men. A native of Cleburne county, Alabama, Mr. Chandler came to Texas in 1898 and resided for a short time near Handley. He operated a cafe at 907 Houston street in 1905 and 1906 before returning to Alabama, where he married. He and his bride returned to Fort Worth, shortly before he opened the Chandler Hotel on the North Side. For 26 months, starting in 1927 he was night manager of the Hotel Texas Coffee Shop. Surviving are the widow; one son, Robert L. Chandler Jr., three daughters, Mrs. W.J. Burten and Misses Edith and Elsie Chandler, all of Fort Worth; and three sisters, Mrs. Welcome Dukes of Cullman, Ala; Mrs. J.E. Horsley of Steppville, Ala., and Mrs. J.A. Dunkin of Foley, Ala. Mrs. R.L. Chandler is the sister of Miss Bela Fordham of Heflin, Ala. ------ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, SEPTEMBER 17, 1942 FRUITHURST News Sept. 14 Mrs. W.E. McCrary, age 28, of Fruithurst, passed away Sept. 8 at her home after an illness of three days. Mrs. McCrary was born in Lawrenceville, Ga. in 1914. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. from Fruithurst Baptist church, Rev. E. Day and Rev. J.R. Morris officiating. Interment was in Evergreen cemetery. She is survived by her husband; three children, Eugene, Ruth and Robert McCrary; and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Brown; one sister, Mrs. Mary Lou Smith and a host of relatives and friends. Pallbearers were Earl Wager, Jeff Davis, R.W.
