We wish them much joy. ___ DEATH OF G.W. LOCKWOOD G.W. Lockwood who lived one and one half miles north of town was stricken with paralysis about a week ago but never rallied and died Sunday about 12 o'clock. He was laid to rest in the cemetery at Heflin last Tuesday. ___ RIDDLE'S BRIDGE News Miss Mettie Rooks visited her sister Mrs. Ammon Crumpton on Friday. __ Mr. Irvin Turner carried his best girl to the singing at Pleasant Grove Sunday, Miss Jessie Grubbs. ___ LOCAL News Mrs. Yates of Nashville is the guest of her daughter Mrs. J.A. Owens. __ Miss Nett Haley returned from Birmingham last week where she was the guest of her sister, Mrs. C. H. Coggins. __ Miss Lovvorn is the attractive guest of her aunt, Mrs. T.H. Shackleford. __ FRIENDSHIP News Mrs. Johnson of Tallapoosa is visiting her brother Mr. G.W. Lowell. ___ Miss Maud Lucky of GA visited her sister Mrs. Williams on Friday. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Thursday, April 10, 1913 MAT EVENS WITNESSES HANGING OF SON'S SLAYER, WALTER JONES "Uncle' Mat Evans went to Birmingham last Friday to witness the hanging of Walter Jones who killed his son Lawrence B. Evans at Mary Lea Mines about two years ago near Birmingham. Uncle Mat, when asked if he was going, replied that he would if he was living. ____ RANBURNE News The singing at J.T. Pirkle's was well attended on Sunday. The music was fine. __ Mrs. Gibbs visited her mother Mrs. Pirkle on Monday. __ Jethro Jackson was bitten by a mad dog last week. He is taking Pastner treatment now and seems to be getting on nicely. __ Warner Fowler passed through Ranburne on Friday. __ Stella Dye and sister visited their grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Howle last week. __ FRUITHURST News Mrs. Caroline Smith died Friday, April 4th, age 94 years. Mrs. Smith was the mother of Mrs. C.A. Crawford of this place. The remains left Saturday morning for Monticello, Iowa where they were laid to rest. Mrs. Smith although of such advanced age was active up to the day of her death, retaining all of her faculties such as sight and hearing. Besides Mrs. Crawford, she also leaves a son. ___ EDWARDSVILLE News Mr. W.L. Groover who has been in Montgomery several days for treatment from a mad dog bite, has returned home with no developments. Glad for you Will and those with you. ___ Mrs. A.C. Burgess has bought the Reid property from Mr. Willis Bennett. He moved out on his farm while she comees into town proper. ___ CHULAFINNEE News The sacred harp singing at Pleasant Grove was well attended. Lee Haywood carried Cora Mae Campbell to the singing. __ Steve Robertson passed through here last Sunday in a new buggy. I suppose he was going to see Hattie Elder. ___ Mr. Striplin had the misfortune to get his barn burned up last Monday night. His losses were 1 cow, 1 hog, some corn, fodder, hay, cotton seed, 1 wagon and buggy. His son-in-law, Ernest Taylor lost 1 mule, 1 cow, all of his corn, cotton seed, hay and fodder. They have the sympathy of their friends and we will do what we can. ___ Mrs. Mint Roberts of Chulafinnee is visiting her daughters, Mrs. Long and Mrs. Barnwell. __ Mr. and Mrs. McElroy and Eron Taylor were the guests of Mrs. Thrower on Sunday. __ HURRICANE CHURCH Community News Our community is sad over the loss of one of our best citizens and an able minister, uncle Tom Evans as he was usually called. His good works and teachings are shown in the lives of the people around Hurricane. Though he is gone we hope to meet him up yonder. We will miss him at church and in sunday school and even when we go hunting. He was at all times uncle Tom Evans and a christian gentleman whom everybody loved that knew him. W.R. She will leave in a few weeks for Texas. ___ Mr. Tom Rooks and family of Sandy Flat spent Saturday night with his parents, Mr. Sam Rooks. __ Mrs. Tredwell visited her mother Mrs. Hanson on Sunday. __ FRUITHURST News Capt. J.P. Carnes went to Tallapoosa Sunday to attend the funeral of Read Master, New's son, who was run over and killed by a freight train on Friday. ___ Mr. Lee Phillips and family visited his father-in-law, W.H. Adair on Sunday. __ IN MEMORY OF MRS. MATTIE E. BUTTRAM Mrs. Mattie E. Buttram was born April 21, 1875. Departed this life February 25, 1913. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.A. Kerr, a prominent family of this county. She was married to Mr. J.W. Buttram on March 10, 1892. She lived above reproach from childhood to death. She was a model. She always had a kind word for her family and friends. She never fretted over the ills of life but showed a christian spirit in all she undertook. She was loved by all who knew her. She has left many friends to mourn her death. She leaves a dear husband, three sons and a daughter-in-law that mourn not as those who have no hope. They with their many friends o nly mourn her absence here. She was a prominent sacred harp singer and she praised god in sacred songs. To her friends, below you will read her advice that she wrote last October, just 4 months to the day before her burial while in her room alone. To the family you have our sympathy. Remember what your dear ones have written. A friend, J.J. Turner. What she wrote October 26, 1912: "This is to you my husband, love, I hope we'll meet our little dove in that celestial home above where all is peace and love. This is to you my oldest son, also your bride for you are one. I hope we'll meet on that bright shore and sing god's praise forever more. This is to you my second son, your mother is most undone, but look to jesus for your guide, he will for you a place provide. This is to you my baby dear, you will never know a mothers care but god will keep you from all harm and bring you home to jesus arms. Now to all my friends and family dear. I soon will leave you in god's care. I hope we'll all with jesus dwell, so friends and dear one fare you well. " ______________ LOCAL News Mrs. S.E. Brown of Atlanta is visiting the family of her son, Mr. J.E. Brown. __ Married on Saturday, April 5th, 1913, Mr. B.J. Harris of Fulton Co. GA to Mrs. Froney Bishop of Hopewell, at the bride's residence. ------ RANBURNE News Mrs. Ruby Hanson is very ill at this writing. __ Mr. S.F. Skinner is very sick but hope to see him down in town soon. __ Old grandma Sims whose age is 81, has been on the sick list for the past few days but is some better. __ Old grandma Shelly whose age is 99 has been on the sick list but is some better. __ The widow Barret of near town spent the day with Mrs. James Lowry. __ Mr. and Mrs. McLeod and children are visting her mother Mrs. Hanson. __ Mr.and Mrs. Ross Buchanan and children are visiting her mother, Mrs. George Stamps. __ Mrs. James Lowry spent the day with her mother Mrs. Alewine on Sunday. ___ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, April 24, 1913 FRUITHURST News Mr. Olive Vass and family spent Sunday and part of Monday with the family of his father-in-law, J.W. Burchfield. __ Mrs. L.S. Foster has been on an extended visit to her children in Mississippi. __ LOCAL News Mr. Clyde Harold Vann and Miss Ruth Johnson of Birmingham were married at the Second Presbyterian Church of Birmingham on the evening of April 10th. After a short trip to Florida they returned to Heflin last Saturday and are now at home at the Dr. Wood residence which Mr. Vann has recently purchased. ___ HOWLES GROVE News Mrs. Mary Cox who has been on the sick list for some time is improving nicely. __ Miss Ila Blake who has been attending school at Boaz, has returned home. __ EDWARDSVILLE News Miss Mollie Bell is spending some time with her sister Mrs. Steve Warren. __ Mrs. Charlotte Burgess has so much improved that she is well enough to spend some time with her children in town. __ HIGHTOWER News Earl Snow and Bud Lovvorn have just arrived from Bowdon. __ LOCAL News Mrs. V.A. Cook has been real sick but is better, we are glad to say. __ W.O. Grant attended the funeral of his brother in Birmingham on Thursday. __ FRIENDSHIP News Mrs. N.J. Liner of Tallapoosa is visiting her daughter Mrs. V.E. Scott. __ Mr. and Mrs. W.H.
