Howle. __ Mrs. J.W. Barnes and daughter Vera are spending a few months in Oklahoma. __ Cecil Vaughan was taken seriously ill Saturday night and was taken to Atlanta Monday morning for an examination by doctors. __ Mrs. W.O. Black and children arrived Sunday night from Hugo, Okla. for a few weeks visit in Heflin. W.O. Black and family will make their home in Birmingham after September 1st. __ L.E. Adams of Selma spent Sunday with his family here. __ The veterans of the blue and gray bivouac together at Gettysburg. The city is Gettysburg is filled to its utmost capacity with 50,000 veterans of both blue and gray. The opening was featured by speeches of Young and Garrison, each receiving a big ovation. Through persistent efforts every man has been cared for as well as possible. Thousands have been given quarters in the big tent and hundreds of others in smaller tents. ____ EDWARDSVILLE News Mrs. Pink Morgan of LA, and her mother-in-law of Heflin, are visiting Mrs. Bennett, her grandmother, this week. __ LOCAL News W.R. Hightower was married to Miss Onie Giddie on June 23rd in Anniston. __ Mrs. W.A. Stephens and daughter Fannie are visiting Mrs. Nancy Walker on Sand Mountain. __ CHULAFINNEE News Rev. T.H. Landers and wife of Lamar visited their mother Mrs. Phillips on Thursday night. __ R.A. Noell and wife spent Sunday with A.B. Thrower and wife. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Thursday, July 10, 1913 CASES BEFORE CLEBURNE COUNTY COURT The following cases were heard in County Court on Monday: State vs. W.T. McElroy, charged with carrying concealed weapon, demands jury trial (2 cases); bond $200. in each case Warner V. McElroy, charged with carrying concealed weapon Oscar Prichard, charged with disturbing religious worship; fined $25. John Green, charged with abusive language; sent to jail, case continued to July 10th. Wm. T. McElroy, charged with selling whiskey, fined $50. Paul Bennett, charged with carrying concealed weapon, fined $70. James Mitchell, charged with carrying concealed weapon, fined $75., sentenced to eighty four days hard labor for the county H.A. Crow, charged with assault with weapon, demands jury trial, bond $200. Tom Rice, charged with unlawfully riding train, fined $10., sentenced to 37 days labor for the county Willie Wasson, charged with shooting on Sunday, fined $10. _______ LOCAL News Hoyt Howle of Venus, Texas is spending a month with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. B.T. Foster. __ Miss Hattie Peace of Douglasville, GA who was the guest of Mrs. James Hanna last week returned to her home Saturday night. __ Marcus Milligan of Pensacola, Florida is spending a few days vacation in town. __ "Uncle" Henry Howle says he is enjoying his visit back to old Cleburne fine and dandy. __ Mrs. Minnie Walker of Venus, Texas is visiting her parents Mr. and Mrs. B.T. Foster. ___ NEWSPAPER issue of Thursday, July 17, 1913 EDWARDSVILLE News Mr. C.B. Bird and son Donald, formerly of this place, now of Tallapoosa, are spending a day or two in town. __ Mr. and Mrs. D.J. Lee, who have been here for over a year, have moved to Florida. We understand that Mr. Lee operates an orange grove in that state. ___ W.A. Brown has shipped 2,466 gallons of huckleberries so far this season. ___ Col. Roosevelt has secured permission to carry a pistol. This is the first time we believe he ever "asked permission" to do anything. ___ NOTICE My son, Arthur Hazel, a minor seventeen years old, has left me without my consent and against my wishes. All persons are warned and notified under penalty of law not to hire, harbor or permit said to remain about their premises. ____ MARRIED AT LAST Last January, Mr. J.W. Smith secured a marriage license to marry Miss Mattie Lou Cofield. Later on, Mr. Cofield, the girl's father, came for a warrant for Mr. Smith getting license for his daughter who was under age. Sheriff Cook went down to see Mr. Smith and he gave up the license and Mr. Cofield stopped the case. Last Sunday morning, Mr. Smith and Miss Cofield made their way into Georgia and when they returned, they were as innocent and happy as two turtle doves, husband and wife. Alwyn Atkins of Fall River, Mass., is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Atkins. __ Mr. Churchill and Miss Donie Faulkner were married last week. __ IN MEMORY OF REUBEN SMITH July 13, 1913 Reuben Smith, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Smith passed away yesterday at one o'clock. He was laid to rest in the Lost Creek Cemetery today, being in his twenty-second year and left everything bright behind him. He was a moral boy from childhood and lifted his hands toward heaven and said he was going home. Reuben leaves father, mother, three sisters, and many relatives and friends to mourn his death. We mourn not as those who have no hope for our loss is his eternal gain. The lord giveth and the lord taketh. Prepare to walk the golden streets and meet our savior in peace. It is sad to know that Reuben is gone. A large number of people attended the funeral. Many beautiful flowers were placed on his grave. His mother is in bed with typhoid fever. His funeral is expected to be preched by Rev. W.D. Kite when his mother gets able to attend. ____ Sam Harlan, road overseer for Beat 10 says he expects to work 40 days straight through on his roads. Sam says people in his beat will be driving over pike roads by Oct. 1st. ___ Mr. Oden has gone to Birmingam for treatment on account of his health failing him. __ J.M. Brown, G.A. McCleskey and Mrs. Collins and Mrs. Brown have just returned from Cherokee Co. where they were called to the funeral of a sister. __ Mr. and Mrs. Jacinth Carruth of Coral, Miss. are visiting relatives and friends here. __ Grandma Luckey of Georgia is visiting her grandchildren Mr. and Mrs. Williams. __ Sorry to report that Mr. Clayton who has been ill, is no better. __ Mrs. August Johnson and little granddaughter are visiting her daughter Mrs. C.H. Vann. __ FRUITHURST News Mr. Butler and Miss Backman drove over in a buggy on Saturday and were married in the park, with Bro. Stephenson performing the ceremony. __ Mr. Foster of Mississippi, a brother of Dr. L.S. Foster, is here during the sickness of Bro. Foster. We are sorry to say he is no better at this writing. ___ Mr. Adolf Saugerstad who has been visiting his uncle and sister of this place returned to his duties as a sergeant in the 22nd infantry now stationed at San Antonio, Texas. ___ Mrs. Wm. Wilkinson of Birmingham came in Saturday evening to spend some time with her mother, Mrs. M. Johnson. __ Mr. Medows and family have moved to Birmingham where they will stay about three months. __ OAKFUSKEE News Jep Ayres, Roy Robert and Albert Cofield attended the singing at Union on Sunday. __ Mrs. Fannie Pearce and children who have been visiting her sister, Mrs. Lester, returned home on Monday. __ Grover Haynes and wife spent Sunday with his sister, Mrs. Noel. __ Mr. J.T. Linley of Deleon, Texas is visiting his daughter, Mrs. Thad Ayres and other relatives. __ Miss Ethel Morris is visiting her sister Mrs. Nancy Noles of Newell. ___ NEWSPAPER issue of Thursday, July 31, 1913 LOCAL News "Uncle" Henry Howle, a former Cleburnite, who has been visiting relatives and friends in the county for several weeks, returned to his home in Texas on Thursday. ___ Fred Osborn and little daughter Frances left Saturday for Cincinnati and other northern points. __ HOPEWELL News Mrs. Treasy Welborn has been quite sick for more than a week but is slowly improving. __ Mr. Earnest Crofford has sold his place and will move to Tallapoosa in September. __ LEGAL BATTLE IN THE COUNTY COURT A legal battle over the possession of a pretty ten year old girl, occurred in County Court on Wednesday and created a good deal of interest. Mrs. Annie Livingston, the mother of the child, who left the child in the possession of Mrs. Roy Starr about eight years ago, went to the home of Roy Starr on Monday and took the child. She drove hurriedly to town where counsel had been previously engaged. Not many minutes had elapsed after her arrival before Mrs. Starr, accompanied by her husband, had employed counsel. The case was set for Wednesday before Judge Glasgow. Mrs. Starr was represented by Merrill and Vann and Mrs. Livingston was represented by Johnson and McMahan. Both sides examined many witnesses and a great deal of public interest was shown by the large crowd that packed the court room.
