Weathers to Miss Estell Davis D.R. Nunnelly to Miss Senorah Howle ___ EXEMPT BUTTONS BEING MAILED OUT The little bronze buttons that will be worn by those exempted from military service in the new national Army were sent from Washington to the local boards on Monday. On the button there appears the word "exempt" above the national coat of arms and beneath are the words "United States". Every man rejected will get one of these buttons. ____ MARS HILL News "Aunt" Polly Laminack had the misfortune of getting snake bit last Thursday. __ W.G. McElroy and family spent Sunday with E.I. Patty and family. __ G.A. Vaughan, one of our neighboring boys, has recently enlisted with Uncle Sam. We wish him success. __ Albert McElroy has recently gone to Chattanooga, Tennessee where he is holding an excellent position. __ LOCAL News B.T. Foster is quite sick. We wish for him a speedy recovery. __ Mrs. William Edwards, living a mile or two south of Edwardsville on the Heflin public road, was bitten on the hand by a rattlesnake on Tuesday morning. It is learned that Mrs. Edwards had gone to the cow lot to milk and was gathering up feed in the crib when she was bitten. The bite caused the lady great pain but at last account she was resting easy. ___ NEWSPAPER issue of Thursday, August 9, 1917 LADY THROWN INTO COOSA RIVER While crossing the Coosa River Monday in a "flat", Mr. O.H. Perryman, living near Heflin, having led the mule to the boat hitched to a buggy, when the animal took fright backing the vehicle off into the water, carrying Mrs. Perryman with it. Fortunately Mrs. Perryman was rescued but the mule and buggy were lost. ____ CONDITION OF E.P. PESNELL CRITICAL Word received in Heflin on Tuesday afternoon was to the effect that the condition of Mr. E.P. Pesnell, living near Ai, was alarming to his family and friends. Mr. Pesnell has been suffering for several months from Pellegra, it is said. His suffering has been so terrible at times it is said to have affected his mind. Mr. Pesnell has lived in Cleburne all his life and hundreds who know and honor him will be pained to learn of his serious condition. ____ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, August 16, 1917 MARS HILL News Monroe Woods, A.S. Hicks and W.A. Hicks have recently gone to Atlanta where they are employed as carpenters on the soldiers' barracks. __ "Uncle" J.J. Hunt has recently purchased a new cider mill. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, August 23, 1917 SECOND CALL ISSUED FOR MEN FOR DRAFT To fill Cleburne County's quota the local draft board has called an additional 105 men. The notices will be mailed this week notifying the drafted men to appear Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for physical examinations. Hubbard of Tallapoosa, Georgia motored to Heflin last week and were the guess of Mr. and Mrs. Otway Hubbard. ___ Mrs. Ben Dorman of Anniston spent Sunday in Heflin the guest of her mother, Mrs. Ella Moore. __ Mr. and Mrs. W.C. McMahan visited in Montgomery last week, visiting their son Clark who is with Co. M. 4th Infantry. It is reported that Co. M will sail for France within a short time. __ Lieutenant Gleason Bean of the quartermaster corps is the guest of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Bean. __ Lieutenant B.P. Hollis of the officers' reserve corps is spending a few days here. __ Mrs. M.F. Owens and son M.F. Jr., of Oklahoma City, Okla., will arrive in Heflin Saturday night and will spend a few days with B.F. Owens family. __ James Hight of Oklahoma is visiting friends and relatives in Cleburne. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, August 30, 1917 MUSCADINE News Miss Blanche West, employed by the Western Union Telegraph Co., Atlanta, Georgia, visited relatives here last week. __ Edward West, who has been working at Mount Berry, Georgia for the Berry School, visited home folks last week. __ W. Raymond Brown of Birmingham is visiting his sister Mrs. P.W. Smith. Raymond has been called to service in the Army and expects to leave early next month for camp. ___ MARS HILL News Mrs. Martha Gable was dangerously ill last week but we are glad to note that she is improving some. __ Jack Duke of near Abernathy ws the guest of J.H. Hamrick on Friday night. __ Mrs. Susie Chandler of Blount county visited Mrs. Martha Gable last week. __ J.W. Buttram of Crossville, Tennessee, who has been visiting in Cleburne for the past week, left for his home on Saturday. __ J.C. McWhorter and John Payne left the first of the week for Anniston where they will work at the soldier's camp. __ Robt. Hicks has a new member in his family; it is a boy. He will answer to the name Milford Jackson Hicks. __ Mrs. M. Morrison left last week for Iowa to spend some time with relatives and friends. __ Miss E.J. Hizer left for New Castle, Del., Saturday morning to attend the burial of her mother. __ BELL MILLS News Born, to Mr. and Mrs. John McCormick, a girl. __ Mrs. N.J. Walker is very ill at this writing. ___ LOCAL News Jim Rowell was here from Borden Springs this week, hobbling around on a stick, suffering from a hurt sustained several weeks ago when a house he was at work on fell and caught him under some heavy timbers. He was laid up for several days but says he will soon be back on the job again. ___ A card has been received from Newt Stephens stating that his regiment had safely landed in England. Newt is a member of Co. C 17th Engineer Corps. __ Alonzo Weathers and wife are reported to be desperately sick with fever. __ Mr. and Mrs. Gus Wright of Cullman county, who have been visiting in Cleburne for several days, returned home. __ Cleveland Morrison and Miss Lola Howle were happily married Wednesday morning at Cedar Creek Church, Rev. G.B. Boman officiating. ___ CHULAFINNEE News Harbon Thrower and wife and G.W.
