Those to leave are: Joe Rome Robinson Andy J. Bentley Will Thrower Wm. Robert Williamson Theopolis Vaughan Marion W. Gill James M. Watson M.M. Crumpton Pitchford C. Teague Armie Marion Parrish Roy Hood Bell ______ SHOEMAKER ASSAULTED AND ROBBED Charlie Shoemaker was assaulted and rendered unconscious at a camp car here last Sunday afternoon about one o'clock by Jesse Barker, a whilte man about 23 years old. Barker is said to have robbed his victim of $20. and escaped. Sheriff Rowell has offered a reward of $15. for Barker's arrest. Barker's right eye is out and thumb, first and second fingers on his right hand are off. Shoemaker is at the home of Deputy Sheriff McWhorter where he was carried Saturday after being assaulted. His condition is critical. ____ LOCAL News The condition of Mrs. Staples on Thursday morning was changed but little and the good lady is still in a critical condition. __ Mrs. Lizzie Brown who has been visiting in Oklahoma for five or six weeks has returned home. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Thursday, March 14, 1918 ARVID WEBB, SOLDIER, DIES AT CAMP WHEELER Arvid Webb, twenty-seven years old, a son of county commissioner J.M. Webb, died in the base hospital at Camp Wheeler after an illness of twelve days of pneumonia. Arvid was among the first of the Cleburne boys to be conscripted and he left Heflin last September for the training camp at Macon, Georgia. His father, who was informed of his son's serious condition, left here for Macon last Friday, but death claimed the young man before his arrival at the camp, the end coming at an early hour Saturday morning. The death of the young man is deeply deplored by hundreds throughout the county. The remains of the young man were shipped back to Heflin and conveyed to the home of his father, where a few short months ago, he bade farewell to answer the call of his county, and Sunday afternoon was laid to rest in the cemetery at Bethlehem church, the funeral service being conducted by Rev. J.M. Haywood. The News sincerely sympathizes with the bereaved family in their sad loss. ____ LOCAL News Col. Merrill went over to Camp Gordon this week. Says he met several of the Cleburne boys and they all seem happy and content. __ John W. Bentley of Tallapoosa and Archie his son of Hamlin, Texas and J.W. Bentley of Muscadine were pleasant visitors to The News office on Saturday. __ Our good friend O.J. Dewberry of Tallapoosa sent his his two year subscripton to the News. Mr. Dewberry was once a resident of Heflin and has many good friends here. __ CHARLIE GREEN DEAD IN COLLISION On Monday afternoon of last week, the family of Mr. and Mrs. George Green were shocked to receive a telegram from Memphis that their son Charlie, who has been firing on a train out of Memphis to some point in Mississippi, was dead in a head-on collision. Melvin and Eva Sewell, brother and sister of Charlie's wife, went to Memphis to come back with the body to Tallapoosa. Shortly after dark the same day, their daughter Georgia and husband Mr. Wommack came from Birmingham with the body of their child that died from whooping cough and pneumonia. The child was buried yesterday. The Green family has lived here for many years and have the sympathy of many friends. Chas. A.
