D.W. Kight of Bowdon, Rt. 4. Mr. and Mrs. Kight, who have been married 58 years, are two of Cleburne's best and most highly esteemed citizens, and are loved and respected by scores of relatives. ___ HEPSABAH News Edward Grant was bitten by a rattlesnake last week. He is improving very slowly. __ Mr. Will Cavender and Miss Bertha Vise were happily married on Sunday. __ IN MEMORY OF ASA WILLINGHAM Worshipful Master, Warden and Brethren of Lebanon Lodge No. 484, A.F. and A.M.; your committee makes the following resolutions: Death has again visited our band and laid his icy hand upon our beloved brother, Asa Willingham, who departed this life June 2, 1920. Bro. Willingham was born in Coweta County, Georgia on April 16, 1835; joined the church at 17; moved to Haralson county, Georgia in 1856; was married to Piety A. Hart on Sept. 26, 1852. To this union were born five children, 4 girls and one boy. His second marriage occurred April 11, 1869 to Augusta Hart, youngest sister of his first wife. To this union, there were born six children, 5 girls and one boy. Bro. Willingham was ordained to preach in 1870; licensed several years before. he continued to preach the remainder of his life. He, with his family, moved to Cleburne county, Alabama in 1906 where he remained until his death. Bro. Willingham joined the Masonic Order in the early part of the sixties and served as chaplain of his lodge for a number of years. He was buried in Providence cemetery in Haralson County, June 3rd, by his Lodge with Masonic honors. Whereas god in his all wise providence has seen fit to call our brother from his labor on earth to the Lodge Triumphant, therefore be it resolved: 1st, that in the death of Bro. Willingham this lodge has lost one of its faithful brother Masons, a true friend and brother and the community a loyal citizen. Resolved 2nd that our heartfelt sympathies are hereby extended to his family and that we shall cherish his memory. Resolved 3rd, that a page in our record book be set apart to his memory and to read thus: " In memory of Asa Willingham, born April 16, 1835, departed this life June 2, 1920." Resolved 4th, that the lodge be draped in mourning and the brethren wear the usual badge thirty days. Resolve 4th, that a copy of this report be furnished the family with the lodge seal; and that a copy be furnished the Cleburne News and Tallapoosa Journal with request to publish same. Wm. L. Blake visited her daughter Mrs. William Brown at Lineville this week. __ Ora Ayers of Texas visited Winne Mae Sears last Saturday. __ Mrs. Merrill and children of Birmingham are visiting her father W.H. Sears. ___ REV. J.W. COX BURIED MONDAY Rev. J.W. Cox, pioneer citizen of Cleburne, died at his home near Arbacoochee on Sunday and was laid to rest in the cemetery at Hurricane on Monday afternoon, a large number of his neighbors and friends being present to pay their last respects to the old veteran. At the time of his death, Mr. Cox was 84 years and ten months old and one of the county's most highly respected citizens and had been a minister of the gospel for many years. Being old, worn and tired he has gone to join Lee, Jackson and the other veterans who have "crossed over the river." _____ LOCAL News Judge H.M. Evans of Temple, Texas left Monday morning to visit his old hime in Ashland, Alabama for a few days before returning to his western home. Mr. Evans was for thirteen years, a probate judge of Clay county. He is a brother of "Uncle" Matt Evans and a close friend of such old veterans as "Uncle" Simon Stricklin, Ben Owens and Elijah Black. May they meet again. ___ Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Lasseter and children of Whitesburg, Georgia arrived on Monday and will spend a few days with W.L. Lasseter and family at Arbocoochee. __ S.H. Watson, on old and highly respected citizen of Bell Mills was carried to Anniston recently and underwent an operation for appendicitis. Latest reports are that he is gettting along nicely. __ W.B., son of C.M. Williamson of Route 8, who has been quite sick with fever for several weeks is slowly improving. The young man is being attended by Drs. Henry Lindsey and Lemuel Johns and Miss Nellie Thompson, trained nurse. ___ E.T. Hammond, Ben Hammond and W.J. Cofield of south Cleburne, left Sunday for Cullman where they represented their Lodge at the annual meeting of the I.O.O.F. Grand Lodge. ___ Mrs. Mary Beason, who, about sixteen years ago was convicted of the murder of her husband Richard Beason, and sentenced to the penitentiary for 30 years, has been granted a pardon or parole by Governor Kilby. Mrs. Beason arrived in Heflin Tuesday morning and left at once for her old home. ___ Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Warren left Friday morning to visit relatives and friends at Dossville, Mississippi and will be away several days. __ Andrew Nipper of Montgomery, Harmon Nipper of Abernathy and Terrell Dougherty of Ai were in town on Tuesday. __ Miss Lois Klink of Highland avenue, Birmingham is the attractive guest of Mrs. Anna Morrison Jones at the home of her parents Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Morrison on Oxford street. ___ OAKFUSKEE News Mrs. Jane Tolleson of Mississippi is visiting her brothers W.H. and P.G. Howle. __ FRIENDSHIP News Mrs. N.J. Liner is visiting her daughter at Boaz. __ Mr. and Mrs. John Abercrombie from Newnan are visiting H.F. Abercrombie family. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Thursday, August 12, 1920 DEATH OF J. R. BARKER REMOVES GOOD CITIZEN The death of Hon. J.R. Barker at his home in Heflin last Monday morning, removed one of the county's best citizens and a man who enjoyed a high place in the esteem of all who knew him. Mr. Barker had been confined to his bed for six or seven weeks, and for several days prior to his death it was realized by those who attended his bedside that there was but slight chances for his recovery. Mr. Barker was a native of this county and a son of the late John R. Barker. His mother made her home with him. Mr. Barker was about sixty years old. When a young man, Mr. Barker was united in marriage to Miss Beckie Horton, a sister to Mrs. A.D. Harper, and from the happy union, 8 children were born, 7 of whom, one son and 6 daughters, survive him as follows: Neal Barker of Nauvoo, Alabama Mrs. Willie Lowery of Tallapoosa, Georgia Mrs. Raymond Barnes of Heflin, Alabama Misses Myrtle, Laura, Ruth and Nellie Barker. One child died in infancy. Before engaging in the practice of law several years ago, he taught school for quite a while. He was a minister of the gospel having joined the Congregational church, a man of the higest honor and integrity who enjoyed the esteem and regard of a host of friends. He had long been a prominent figure in the affairs of his community and will be deeply and sincerely mourned. Besides being chairman of the county board of education, Mr. Parker was county solicitor, clerk of the city council. He also kept up the circuit clerk's books. He was a prominent member of the Masonic fraternity. The bereaved loned one have the deepest sympathy of The News and a host of friends. Arrangements for the funeral and interment, which will take place at Cane Creek northeast of Edwardsville, had not been made Wednesday afternoon. ____ LOCAL News Chester Baxter of Detroit, Michigan is visiting his sister, Mrs. R.L. Owen at Bell Mills this week. __ William Lake of Silsby, Texas is here on a two week visit with his mother Mrs. R. Lake. __ The neighbors and friends of Mr. W.T. Pesnell deeply sympathize with them in the death of their little girl who died at the home of her parents last Thursday morning. She was about seven months old and had been sick most of her life. The funeral and interment was at Ai Baptist church on Friday, the services being conducted by Rev. Hanibal Allen. ____ RANBURNE News Dock Alexander, of Burwell, GA, well known in this county, died Sunday at 12:30 o'clock and was buried Monday at Smith's Chapel in Carroll County, GA. Mr. Alexander had been in ill health for quite a while. ___ Luther, the 12 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Will Truitt of Ranburne was found dead in bed early Sunday morning, having passed away some time during Saturday night. The remains of the boy were laid to rest at the cemetery at Bethlehem campground on Monday. The friends and neighbors of the parents deeply sympathize with them in their great loss. __ Mr. J.C. (Bud) Garner who moved many years ago from this county to Louisiana, is here on a visit to his old home. Mr. Garner moved to Louisiana thirty-odd years ago and this is his second visit back during this time. __ OAK GROVE News Henry Kesler and family of Leoma, Tennessee are visiting relatives here. __ W.Z. Walker and Frank Clay of Leoma, Tennessee visited in this community recently. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Thursday, August 19, 1920 RECEIVES CERTIFICATE Charles A. Kennedy, who saw service with the 116th Field Artillery in France and who received several shrapnel wounds in the battle of Argonne, is the first Cleburne boy to receive his wound certificate. Several other wounded veterans have later received their certificates. The certificates are done in very nice work and bear this inscription "Columbia gives to her son the accolade of the new chivalry of humanity." ____ BOWDON ROUTE 4 News L.L. Langley, H.A. Whitman, S.D. Otwell, Early Cook and Lem Williams have just returned from a prospecting trip to Tennessee. Langley has sold and and will move up there soon. ___ Carroll Anderson of near Crackertown has sold his farm and purchased over near the state line. __ TRUE CHRISTIAN HAS PASSED TO THE GREAT BEYOND William Caldwell, a citizen of Cleburne county, died at his home near Pinewoods on Friday morning, August 6th. The remains were carried to Carroll county, Georgia for burial. A large number of his neighbors and friends were present to pay their last respects to this noble citizen before he was carried away for burial. He lived a pure, christian life and was ready to go when the lord called him. He was a member of the Missionary Baptist church at Camp Creek. The church has lost a true member and he will be sadly missed in the church and community. He leaves a wife, six children and a number of grandchildren to mourn his death. The children were present at his death. They are: John Caldwell, Carroll County, GA Linton Caldwell, Carroll County, GA Edd Caldwell, Carroll County, GA Malachie Caldwell, Cleburne Co. Ala Mrs. Ezra Crumby, Cleburne County, Ala Mrs. Ada Lee, Tallapoosa, GA "Dear father has gone to that city where troubles and trials never come, He dwells with the angels and his loved ones, In that beautiful heavenly home. O' children, prepare ye to meet him before it is eternally too late, He is anxiously awaiting you, at the beautiful golden gate. Weep not for him now dear loved ones, he is resting in peace we know, He is through with all sorrow and sickness, and has finished his work here below." Written by Jewell Mae Horton ____ SAD DEATH OF J.O. DUNN Mr. J.O. Dunn, age 35, died at Hot Springs last Wednesday where he had gone for treatment. He had been in failing health for some time and died within a week after arriving at Hot Springs. He leaves a wife, father, four brothers and five sisters to mourn his death. The remains were returned to Edwardsville on Friday night and laid to rest in the Cane Creek cemetery on Saturday, Revs. J.W. Williams, J.R. Bannister and John Patty making appropriate talks at the grave. ___ SAM THOMPSON DROPPED DEAD Samuel Thompson, aged 72, of near Heflin, dropped dead at Atkins & Owens store early last Saturday morning. Heart disease is supposed to have been the cause of his death. Mr. Thompson was 72 years old at the time of his death and had lived in Cleburne all of his life. He was a relative of Mrs. N.A. Sox of Edwardsville and had other relatives in the county. The remains were laid to rest in Cane Creek Cemetery on Sunday at 12 o'clock, the services being conducted by Rev. C.D. Knight. He was a member of the Missionary Baptist church, a good neighbor and upright man and his sudden death has cast a gloom over the entire community. ____ MAN IS KILLED IN SHOAL CREEK ROW J.T. McKinney, a Shoal Creek farmer, is in jail at Heflin, charged with the killing of James Usery, a moulder of Anniston, at the home of the fomer in the northern part of the county, early Tuesday morning. McKinney says that Usery came to his house after dark on Sunday night with a woman, who Usery claimed, was his wife and asked for board. Reports from the scene of the killing are to the effect that Usery had become intoxicated en route to the home of McKinney and after reaching that place he attacked several members of the family with a razor and McKinney says he shot to save his wife's life. Five shots were fired at Usery at close range. The woman in the case left just after the shooting. Sheriff McWhorter went to the home of McKinney on Tuesday and arrested him and brought him to the county jail. ___ IN MEMORY OF MRS. CYNTHIA PULLEN On August 1st the death angel claimed as his victim our dear friend and neighbor, Mrs. Cynthia Pullen, widow of C.H. Pullen. She leaves only one child, H.B. Pullen, one sister, Mrs. Stephens and a host of friends and relatives to mourn her death. She was born in 1861 and joined the Methodist church in early girlhood and lived a consecrated christian life, always ready to visit the sick and had a kind word and smile for all. She will be sadly missed by her friends and neighbors. She had been afflicted for some time and had been carried to an Atlanta hospital where an operation was performed but the shock was too much for her weakened condition and she passed into the Great Beyond. The remains of the deceased were tenderly laid to rest in the cemetery at Ranburne on the 3rd, Rev. D.W. Kight conducting the funeral services. __ LOCAL News J.B. Singleton and wife of Oklahoma are visiting Cleburne relatives and friends for a few days. __ Master Gleason Snow of Atlanta, GA was the guest of his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Snow this week. __ BELL MILLS News Mr. and Mrs. Madge Kaylor of Iredell, Texas returned to their home this week after an extended visit in Cleburne with relatives and friends. __ W.W. Brown of Atlanta left the first of the week after spending several days with his brother J.A. Brown. __ LOCAL News It has been learned that Neal Tolleson who drives an oil wagon in Anniston for the Standard Oil Company was rendered unconsious when he was struck on the ground by a bolt of lightning during an electrical storm Friday afternoon. He was rendered unconscious for some time. He is a brother of J.O. Tolleson and has a large circle of relatives and friends in Cleburne. ___ Mr. and Mrs. C.F. Pirkle and children of Nauvoo, Ala., are visiting relatives in Cleburne. __ Mrs. Hattie Brown of Oak Level visited her sister Mrs. Mollie Moore last week. __ Mrs. Mandy Parker was the guest of her father T.C.
