Mr. Morris was an active soldier in the Creek War, and was one of the lucky ones to make his escape at the terrible massacre of Fort Mims NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, November 1, 1894 Died, on last Saturday, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe B. Merrill, aged 1 year, 3 months and 28 days, four miles east of Heflin. The little fellow was taken with croup last Thursday night and medical skill failed to relieve him. The interment was made at the Heflin cemetery last Sunday. NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, December 24, 1896 DIED - - Mr. John F. Wiggins, a conductor on a freight train on the Southern Railway, who was severely injured at Oxanna about ten days, died at the Hillman hospital in Birmingham last Monday. After the amputation of his foot and leg, gangrene set in and it became necessary to amputate a second time on both his legs. After the second operation he did not have the vitality to rally and died. His many friends here sorrow at his death and extend sympathy to his bereaved family. His remains were brought here from Birmingham on Tuesday night and interred in the Heflin cemetery today (Wednesday.) NEWSPAPER issue of Thursday, September 8, 1927 FINAL RITES FOR MRS. MERRILL Mrs. Elizabeth Merrill, age 73, widow of the late Robert E. Merrill, and a pioneer resident of Cleburne county, died at her home in Arbacoochee Saturday night following a short illness. Burial was in the Heflin Cemetery Sunday afternoon. Surviving are three sons, Cliff, Charlie and Paul Merrill of Arbacoochee and one daughter Mrs. Oliver Gaston of Corinth, Randolph County, Ala., four brothers, James Austin of Ginwood, Georgia; Charlie, Joe and William Austin of Altanta; three sisters, Mrs. Carrie Graves of East Point, GA; Mrs. Maggie Carter and Mrs. Mammie Cook of Atlanta, GA. Mrs. Merrill was an aunt of Judge Hugh D. Merrill of Anniston and W.B. Merrill of Heflin, Ala. Mrs. Merrill was preceded to the grave by her husband about 30 years ago, he being buried in the Heflin cemetery. NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, September 29, 1900 Lillian, the two year old baby of Mr. and Mrs. C.D. Richardson died at their home in East Birmingham last Monday and was buried in the cemetery at this place Tuesday morning. NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, May 5, 1921 MRS. IONE SEAMAN LAID TO REST The death of Mrs. Ione Seaman, devoted daughter of Mr. Thomas Adams, and sister of Messrs. Benton and Lovic Adams . The funeral services were conducted by Rev. G.B. Boman, assisted by Rev. W.M. Wade on Saturday afternoon with interment in the Heflin cemetery. Mrs. Seaman was born at Chulafinnee June 21, 1894 She was married to Mr. J.C. Seaman on October 15, 1918 NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, October 28, 1899 DIED - - Mr. David A. O'Keefe died at the home of his mother, Mrs. S.E. Bell, in Heflin, on Monday, October 23rd, of spinal meningitis. The deceased was born in Randolph County, Alabama on January 17, 1853 and went to Texas at the age of nineteen years and has resided in that State continuously since, his recent home being at Colorado City. He had never married and at the time of his death his bedside was surrounded by his mother and two brothers, C.A. and J.E. O'Keefe who had been summoned from their Texas home, and two of his sisters, besides other relatives and friends of the family. While he died far from his home, and except his own family, comparatively among strangers, to its last resting place in Heflin, Cemetery, NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, January 23, 1904 DIED - - J.P. West, a nephew of R.C. West of this city, died of pneumonia at Bell Town last Saturday evening and was buried in the Heflin Cemetery on Sunday afternoon. He was 17 years old. Newspaper Issue of Saturday, January 5, 1907 KILLED BY TRAIN One of the saddest accidents that has occurred in quite a while was that of John Yother, who was struck by train No. 37 at the water tank near the Heflin station last Friday night, cutting his left leg off and causing internal injuries from which he died in a short time. His remains were laid to rest in the Heflin cemetery Sunday evening. He leaves a wife and several children to mourn his death NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, November 17, 1900 R.T. Chambers, for many years a citizen of this county, died at the home of his son John, in Anniston Thursday night after a brief illness. He was about 65 years old. He leaves a wife and four children to mourn his death. His remains were laid to rest in the Heflin cemetery yesterday afternoon. Newspaper Issue of January 4, 1902 (?) On Christmas morning, December 25th, death claimed Miss Roena Stephenson at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. S.F. Stephenson on Bedwell Street. Her lingering illness of several months was borne with Christian resignation. She expressed a firm hope in Christ, a desire to depart this life to be with him in heaven. She was a member of the Methodist Church, a tireless Sabbath school worker. As a daughter she was dutiful and as a sister also. She was 24 years old. Her funeral was conducted by Revs. T. Kerr and John A. Scott and was attended by a large congregation NEWSPAPER issue of Thursday, November 1, 1917 IN MEMORIAM OF MILDRED JANE TAYLOR, NEE MISS FARGARSON The subject of the sketch, Sister Mildred Jane Taylor, nee Miss Fargarson, was born in Henry County, Georgia April the 10th, 1840 and was married to Mr. J.C. Taylor on October 5th, 1856. Bro. Taylor departed this life in December 1891, thus leaving her a widow 25 years ago. She followed her husband to the great beyond on October 18th, 1917 at the age of 77 years, six months and 8 days. Sister Taylor joined the Missionary Baptist church 64 years ago at Beersheba, Henry County, Georgia, and lived a consistent Christian life until her death. She was devoted to her church, true to her profession, to her god, her husband, children and all. She was the mother of 11 children, two sons and nine daughters, all of whom lived to be grown but two. Three have died since growing up, this she leaves six living children, one son and five daughters. Sister Taylor lived to see the fifth generation, a thing that is very unusual. She herself, was one; her children the second; her grandchildren the third; great grandchildren the fourth and one great great grandchild the fifth. Not many of us will live that long. Counting her children and all she leaves more than 100 descendants. Her life was well lived; her record was a good one; her reward is sure. She is waiting now on the other shore for the rest of the family to come. She will be there to meet you when your feet touch the golden strand. Then take courage and press on in the christian life and meet her again in the land of immortality. Her former pastor, G.B. Boman NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, October 30, 1919 MRS. STEPHENSON DIED TUESDAY Mrs. W.F. Stephenson, one of the county's oldest and best beloved women, died at the home of her husband on Tuesday after an illness of only a few days. The interment was in the Heflin cemetery Wednesday afternoon, Rev. W.M. Wade, her pastor, officiating. Mrs. Stephenson was about 80 years old at the time of her death, and was dearly beloved by every one who knew her. There was not a more devoted couple than were Mr. and Mrs. Stephenson and the entire community deeply and sincerely sympathizes with the aged husband in his hour of great sorrow and loneliness. The News extends sympathy to husband and children. EX-CONFEDERATE ANSWERS LAST ROLL CALL Mr. W.F. Stephenson died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A.A. Danforth in Birmingham on February 26, 1921 and the remains were brought to Heflin on Saturday night and laid to rest in the cemetery on Sunday February 27, 1921. While his death was expected it came as a shock to his loved ones, friends and old acquaintances. He had been in declining health for several months. His good and true companion preceded him to the grave about 18 months ago and was laid to rest in the cemetery here. Parted only for awhile this good Christian couple now sleep side by side awaiting the second coming and the judgment when they will take their places on his right hand and greet their children again. Mr. Stephenson was at the time of his death in his 83rd year. He was born at Stone Mountain, Georgia on December 29, 1838 and moved to Heflin from Carroll County, Georgia in 1882. At the age of 19 he was married to Miss M.J. Gillespie from which union five children were born, three girls and two boys, the remaining living children being: Mrs. A.A. Danforth of Birmingham Mrs. W.M. Harris of Heflin Messrs. A.C. and E.R. Stephenson of Birmingham. Nine great grandchildren and twelve grandchildren also survive. He was an ex- confederate soldier, having served faithfully four long, bloody years in the Lost Cause. The brigade he was identified with was organized in Carroll County, Georgia. He was a member of the Baptist church being a charter member of the church here. Revs. G. B. Boman and W.M. Wade conducted the funeral services at the M.E. Church, South. To the bereaved children and other relatives The News extends heartfelt sympathy and hope that all will live so as to meet him in that great reward. NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, May 24, 1923 News was received in Heflin on Tuesday of the death Mrs. Dansforth of Birmingham. The deceased was a sister of Mrs. W.M. Harris of Heflin. The remains were brought here Tuesday night and carried to the home of her sister where funeral services were held on Wednesday. She was buried in the Heflin Cemetery. We extend sympathy to the bereaved ones. On May 22, 1923, there passed from earth the beautiful spirit of Mrs. Alice A. Dansforth, at the age of 62 years, 7 months and 17 days. Sister Danforth was born and reared in Heflin and was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Stephenson who were well and favorably known here. She was the sister also of Mrs. W. M. Harris of this city. Sister Dansforth was twice married; first to Rev. Marion Campbell and second to a Mr. Dansforth of Birmingham. She was the mother of six children, four by her first marriage and two by her first marriage. She had been a member of the church for more than a half a century, having joined the church when only ten years of age. At the time of her death she was a member of the First Methodist church in Birmingham. Dr. George NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, January 25, 1902 (?) Ora Neal Zaner, born Feb 18, 1885, died of pneumonia January 23, 1902, at the home of her father S.C. Zaner Jr. in this city. Miss Ora was a member of the M.E. Church South, NEWSPAPER Issue of November 7, 1903 DIED - -Mrs. Eliza Loren of Muscadine died at the home of G.W. Wager of this city after only a few days of pneumonia. She was 66 years old. She came to this place to visit the family of Mr. Wager and contracted a severe cold which soon developed into pneumonia. Her husband preceded her to the grave several years ago and no children survive her. Her remains were interred in the Heflin cemetery on Wednesday NEWSPAPER issue of Saturday, December 5, 1903 DIED - -Mrs. Callie Williams, wife of H. M. Williams, died at her home in this city this morning after an illness of several months. She was 24 years old. Her husband and two small children survive her. Her body will be laid to rest in the Heflin cemetery tomorrow. NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, September 7, 1916 DEATH OF MRS. W.J. HENRY (Essie Ann Moore) After an illness of long duration, Mrs. W.J Henry, one of Heflin's most highly beloved ladies, departed this life Saturday last at the age of 66 years. Mrs. Henry was stricken about three years ago while visiting in Bremen, GA and since which time she gradually grew worse until death came to relieve her of her suffering. She was a member of the Baptist church, having joined more than 30 years ago. On May 20th of this year she was taken seriously ill and since that time she was confined to her bed. She bore her afflictions with the fortitude of a true Christian, and when the end came she gently passed into the great beyond. Besides the husband, Mrs. Henry is survived by six children; Mrs. W.T. Chappell, Mrs. H.G. Entrekin of Bremen, GA, Mrs. J.S. Carruth of Coral, Mississippi, Mrs. W.S. Jones of Bremen, GA, W.A. Henry of Galveston, Texas, Guy Henry of Dallas, Texas. The funeral services were conducted by Revs. W.A. Mays and John S. Edwards on Sunday morning at the residence in the presence of a large number of sorrowing relatives and friends, after which the interment was in the Heflin cemetery. Mrs. Epsie Ann Moore Henry was born April 13, 1851 in Henry County, Georgia. In 1869 she moved to Cleburne county, Alabama. On December 7, 1871 she was married to W.J. Henry and to this union six children were born, four girls and two boys. LAST RITES FOR MRS. FOSTER The funeral for Mrs. B.T. Foster, age 69, who died Saturday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. R.E. Jones, in Anniston, was held Sunday morning at the Heflin Baptist church, the pastor Rev. S.A. Taylor being in charge. Mrs. Foster suffered a stroke of paralysis about three weeks ago at Gadsden from which she never rallied. She is survived by the following children: Mrs. G.E. Walker of Venus, Texas Mrs. R.E. Jones of Anniston, Ala, with whom she lived Mrs. M.B. McKelvey of Detroit, Michigan Harry Foster of Heflin, Ala.; and a daughter-in-law, Mrs. W.B. Foster of Douglasville, Ga; all of whom were present at the funeral. Other relatives are one sister, Mrs. D.W. Peace of Douglasville, Ga, who was present; a brother C.C. Nichols of Birmingham, Ala.; a sister Mrs. F.B. Smith of Frederick, Oklahoma, not present; two sister-in-laws present, Mrs. R.N. Nichols of Anniston and Mrs. W.B. Nichols of Gadsden and a sister in law Miss Hattie Nichols of Columbus, Georgia. Mrs. Foster was born in Roanoke and moved to Edwardsville, Ala., with her husband about 40 years ago and 20 years ago the family came to Heflin. She was a member or the Missionary Baptist church of Heflin. Mrs. Foster was a kind hearted and affectionate mother and generous neighbor, and her death removes one of our most beloved christian women and in her going, the family has the profound sympathy of the Cleburne News and their many other friends in their great loss. Jenkins 55 years old, sister of E.O. and Elisah Jenkins died at Bryce hospital, Tuscaloosa and was buried in the Heflin cemetery on Tuesday. She had been an inmate of the hospital for more than 25 years NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, April 18, 1929 E.O. JENKINS, AGE 75, BURIED SUNDAY AT HEFLIN Funeral and burial services for Mr. E.O. Jenkins, 75 years old, who died at his home in Heflin Friday night were held Sunday, interment being in the local cemetery, the Rev. J.C. Francis of Lincoln, former pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, being the officiating minister. Mr. Jenkins who had lived in Cleburne practically all his life, was one of the county's best known and most highly honored citizens, a faithful husband and affectionate father; a true neighbor and friend and a man who attended strictly to his own affairs at all times. The true worth of Mr. Jenkins cannot be measured in dollars and cents and not only his family but the county and Heflin has sustained a great loss in the passing of this good man, and with hundreds of others, The Cleburne News extends sincere sympathy to the bereaved wife, children, brothers and sisters in their irreparable loss. NEWSPAPER issue of Thursday, March 14, 1929 HEFLIN WOMAN DIED TUESDAY Word was received here Tuesday afternoon of the death in a Tuscaloosa hospital of Mrs. Claude Cunningham of Heflin, her death following an illness of several weeks. Her body was to arrive here Wednesday for funeral services and burial in the Heflin Cemetery. Surviving are the husband and several children. NEWSPAPER issue of Thursday, April 7, 1921 IN MEMORY OF LITTLE LUCILE WADE On Sunday morning, Lucile, the little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Wade died at their home on Ross street, age 2 years and thee months. She was a very bright child and was the last survivor of their four children. Many friends called at the home to express their sympathy with the grief stricken parents, and many attended the burial at the Heflin cemetery, NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, December 16, 1897 A large number of people from Edwardsville attended the burial of Col. R.E. Merrill here Tuesday. IN MEMORIAM of ROBERT EDWARD MERRILL On Sunday morning, December 12th, Robert Edward Merrill died at his home on Evans Street, in this city, after a long illness of Hepatic Sclerosis. He was born in Carroll County, Georgia on the 5th day of January 1855. He married Miss Bettie Austin of Fayette County, Georgia on The 6th of December 1874. He was admitted to the bar at Fayetteville, GA about 1882 and moved to Edwardsville in this county in 1884; he has since resided in this and Randolph counties. About six years ago, feeling impressed with a sense of duty, he took ministerial orders in the Congregational church and entered upon the work of the ministry. For several years past he has been largely engaged in developing the mineral interests of this county. He was a member of Caldwell Lodge A.F. and A.M. in this city, and was buried in Heflin cemetery with masonic NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, March 12, 1904 DIED - - Mr. W.T. Williams died at his home in this city last Saturday after a short illness of bronchial pneumonia. He was buried here Monday afternoon. Mr. Williams moved to Heflin two years ago from Hightower and had made many friends here who are grieved by his death. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias lodge at this place. His wife and four small children survive him and they have the sympathy of the people of Heflin NEWSPAPER issue of Friday, November 17, 1911 Lee Blanton died at his brother's near Beason Mill last Wednesday and was interred in the Heflin Cemetery on Thursday. Lee was reared in Heflin and had many friends. The News extends sympathy to the family. NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, January 18, 1908 (?) Elmer Hubbard, who had been with the Alabama Coca Cola Bottling Co. at Talladega since last fall, came home last Monday a week ago, seriously ill with typhoid fever and died Friday night following. Owing to the inclemency of the weather the funeral was postponed from Sunday until Monday. Quite a number of relatives and friends from a distance were present at the funeral services, which were preached by rev. Bransom of Talladega. The pall bearers were J.A. Owens, H.A. Possibly at Heflin? NEWSPAPER issue of Thursday, December 22, 1927 FOUND DEAD IN BED Miss Elizabeth Armstrong, 80-odd years old, was found dead in bed Wednesday morning of last week. She was an aunt of Jas. W. Baber and her death removes the last member of one of the county's oldest families. Interment was in the Heflin cemetery. NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, December 20, 1928 SEAB ECHOLS DEAD Seab Echols, age 36, farmer of south Cleburne, was found shot to death at the home of his mother-in-law, Mrs. Susan Parrish, 12 miles south of Heflin on Friday afternoon. After an investigation, Sheriff A. Rowell said he believed Echols had shot himself. A shotgun was found lying beside the body with one shell exploded. The charge had taken effect in Echols head. Members of the family told the sheriff that Echols had been greatly worried for the past few weeks. Interment was made Saturday in the Heflin cemetery. NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, December 16, 1920 MR. PULLEY DEAD Word was received at this office Thursday morning just before going to press, telling of the death of Mr. W.E. Pulley in Anniston where he had been carried for an operation for appendicitis. His body was brought to Heflin for burial. The wife and five children survive. ???? NEWSPAPER issue of Thursday, March 10, 1921 Mr. Bill Armstrong, about seventy five years old, died in Heflin after an illness of several months. He was an uncle of Mr. J.W. Baber. NEWTON IS BURIED HERE Mrs. Theodocia Newton, wife of Mr. W.R. Newton, died at their home in Atlanta on Monday the 7th inst. Her body was brought to Heflin on Tuesday where she was laid to rest. Mr. and Mrs. Newton came to this county about fifteen years ago from Tennessee and they lived in this community until about one year ago when they moved to Atlanta. THE CLEBURNE NEWS Thursday January 2, 1936 Heflin M. D. Robison, age 77, was laid to rest Tuesday morning in Heflin Cemetery following funeral services conducted at the M. E. Church, South, The Rev. F. J. Ingram, of Ashland, conducting the services with Owens in charge. Mr. Robison died during the night of Dec 29 at his room. His many friends were shocked to learn of his sudden death. Surviving are four daughters Mrs. J. D. Manget, of Atlanta, Ga, Mrs. Cecil Williams of Birmingham, Mrs. James Swicegood, of Birmingham and Miss Lola Robison of Atlanta and three sons, Charles B. Robison, Luther C. Robison and H. Scott Robison, all of Birmingham. THE CLEBURNE NEWS Thursday February 20, 1936 Heflin Martha Evans Stricklen Mrs. Martha Evans Stricklen, age 91, who died Wednesday, Feb 12, at the home of Dr. Thigpin at Tuscumbia, where she had made her home the last few years following the death of her husband, Simon Stricklen, was probably the oldest native Cleburne Countian. Her death removed the last member of the sons and daughters of William P. Evans and his wife, Elizabeth Ann McEwing Evans, who were blessed with 15 children. The body of Mrs. Stricklen arrived in Heflin Thursday afternoon of last week and carried to the Methodist Episcopal Church South where funeral services were held. The Rev. C. E. Kaylor, pastor, officiated. Burial was in the City cemetery. Pallbearers were R. C. Meacham, A. L. Black, G. F. Hill, F. A. Vaughn, J. T. Black and C. J. McCraven. Surviving are three sons; S. A. Stricklen, Reform; W. A. Stricklen, Florida; and E. E. Stricklen, Texas; two daughters, Mrs. R. E. Sessions, Birmingham, and Mrs. Stell Blake, Tuscumbia. Mrs. Stricklen was born near Evans Chapel, where she spent her early girlhood and was married to Simon Stricklen. She was a member of the Southern Methodist Church more than 75 years and lived a true Christian life. Of interest to relatives and friends is: Of the 15 children there were two sets of twins, Wesley and Asbury, Matthew and Martha (Mrs. Stricklen). They were thirteenth and fourteenth children born to William P. and Elizabeth Ann. Joe was the fifteenth child. Children born other than the latter five were Alec, John, Jim, Isaac, Margaret, Henry, Robert, Green, Elizabeth and Martin.
