File Manager - Lygia D. Cutts JULY 1999 Peter Francis Tew and Caroline Salona Long Peter Francis Tew, born about 1846, was the son of Allen Tew and Sarah Benton. Allen Tew was born about 1818 in North Carolina and died June 23, 1893 in Pike County. Peter Francis was the third of ten children, with his siblings being: Drucilla, Cintilla, James Allen, Isaac J., Levi H., Leroy, Sarah Z.; Daniel M.; and Hezekiah J. Tew. Allen Tew served in the Civil War in Company B, 57th Regiment Alabama Volunteers. Allen Tew, Peter Francis' father, was described in the "Old People" article in the 1891 Troy Messenger as: "... fought desperately in the skirmishes with the Indians in 1836. Although he was forty-five years old, he shouldered his musket in 1863 and fought for the South. Mr. Tew has fifty-eight grandchildren. He is a member of the Primitive Baptist Church at Brundidge. He is a very old man, though he says he can chop an acre of cotton or walk twenty-five miles in a day. He is remarkable for his perseverance, industry, and honesty." Allen Tew's father was John Tew of Sampson Co., NC. Sarah "Sallie" Benton Tew was born in 1823 in Dallas County, AL and was the daughter of Samuel Benton, born about 1785 and died in Barbour County, AL on August 24, 1834. Samuel Benton's wife was named Sarah in his will. Peter Francis Tew also enlisted in the Confederate State of America in 1861 in Co. B, 57th Alabama Regiment. He served in Shelly's Brigade, and was paroled at the end of the war. He served three years, and was slightly wounded. He was paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina on May 2, 1865. A copy of his parole slip is included in his widow's pension file. He was surrendered with Joseph E. Johnston's army at the close of the war. Peter Francis Tew married Caroline Salona Long on February 11, 1868 in Blue Springs, Barbour County, Alabama. "Callie", as she was called, was born September 2, 1851, and was the daughter of Charles Long and Elizabeth "Betsy" Hagler of Barbour County. Betsy was the daughter of Peter Hagler and Elizabeth Polk, of Union County, NC. Peter Francis and Callie are found with their family in the 1880 Pike County census in the Dixon and Monticello Beat area. Their children were: (1) Sara Jane "Jennie" Tew, born March 10, 1869, who married Joseph William Perry Wilson, son of Samuel Wilson and Hannah Flowers ; (2) Elizabeth Tew, born about 1874; (3) Mollie Tew, born about 1874, who married a Mr. Jones ; (4) William Henry Tew, born May 1877; (5) Mattie Lee Tew, born April 1879, who married R. F. Williams and lived in Fountain, FL; (6) James L. Tew, born February 10, 1884, who married Mattie L. Baggett in Central City, AL; (7) Carrie Fannie Tew, born November 1886, who married Mr. Mitchell and (8) an infant born September 8, 1892, who died when eight days old. Peter Francis Tew died in Enterprise, Alabama on September 19, 1910. He belonged to a Camp of Confederate Veteran's in Enterprise. At the time of her pension application, Sarah was living with her daughter, Sara Jane "Jennie", and son-in-law, Joseph William Perry Wilson in Enterprise, AL. Joseph William Perry's occupation in the 1900 Coffee County census is listed as "log sawer" and his wife is listed as a "farm laborer." Sallie listed her children and their occupations in her pension application. "Willie" Tew was a Minister of the Gospel; James Tew, a druggist; Jennie Wilson, farm laborer; Mollie Jones, farm laborer; Fannie Mitchell, mill hand, and Mattie Williams, mill hand. Sallie indicated that the "stayed about with my children" after her husband's death. Her husband left a small farm in Enterprise. One daughter lived in Geneva County, AL. Their son Willie Tew, lived out of state. James Tew settled in the Hurtsboro, AL area.
