Coffee County AlArchives Cemeteries.....Shearon/Sharon Cemetery - Partial Survey More to Come ************************************************ Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/al/alfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Kathy (Kelley) King http://www.genrecords.net/emailregistry/vols/00027.html#0006524 July 14, 2008, 12:15 pm Abstracted By: Kathy (Kelley) King My uncle, Dr. Paul D. Kendrick, helped me identify some of the lost and unmarked graves. His grandparents (my great- grandparents), Joe and Lydia Wells, are buried here. History from Dr. Paul Kendrick: Sharon Primitive Baptist Church sat at this site many years ago. The church building was about where the sheltered area outside the cemetery fence is situated now. The church ceased having services some years before 1950. Paul's grandparents, (my g-grandparents) were members at Sharon Primitive Baptisit Church and are buried there. The grandmother, Lydia Wells, was buried in 1950. The church building was still standing at that time, but leaning so dangerously that the funeral was held at Zion Chapel Baptist Church, then the burial was completed at Sharon. The building was blown down in the fall of 1950 by a thunderstorm wind. It remained in that collapsed state for years afterward. Location: Sharon is between Elba and Troy, about 10 miles north of Elba, just south of Wilkinstown. From Elba, drive north on US 87 for about 10 miles. After passing through Zion Chapel community, go about 3 miles and look for Coffee County Road 315. Turn left (west). Go about 2 miles, maybe less, on 315. Look on the right side of the road for the names Vance and Nelson on two mailboxes near each other. Go past the mailboxes, up a hill, and look for the back side of a road sign on the left. There is a driveway into the Sharon Cemetery on the left, just past the road sign. It is hard to see. After you make the turn onto the driveway, you can see the cemetery. Information: This cemetery is on private property. There are No Trespassing signs, but one of the owners has said that it is alright to go to the cemetery. The owners are gracious enough to let us go on their property, so please be good visitors. Please close the gate as you leave and do not litter the property. Thanks! The survey is complete. I will make additions and corrections as needed.
