Patrick, a farmer in Coffee Co. (1860 Census Dwelling 1223) was mustered into the 57th Alabama Infantry as a Private on Feb 12, 1863. He served in the 1864 Atlanta defensive campaign. He was captured on Dec. 16, 1864 in Nashville, TN and sent north to Camp Douglas in Chicago where he died as a POW on January 11, 1865. His name appears on the Confederate Mound statue in Chicago. Additional Comments: Churchwell Patrick was my great-great grandfather. The "proof" of his miltary service is in "Alabama Confederate Soldiers 1861-1865 Unit Roster Volume III, 5th Bn Vol Inf. -Misc" Edited by Janet B. Hewett. Broadfoot Publishing Company, Wilmington, NC 1999. On page 1390 (or 489) he is listed as: Patrick, Churchwell W 57th Inf. Co. G The 1860 US Federal census records for Coffee County Alabama show that his age in that year was 40 (making his DoB in the year 1820), that he was married, a farmer and that he was born in North Carolina. His death was recorded in the records of Camp Douglas and, again, his name appears on the Statue on top of Confederate Mound in Oak Woods Cemetery as: PATRICK, C.W. G 57 ALA.
