Gone, But Not Forgotten Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord; from henceforth yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors, and their works do follow them. Rev. 14, 15. Henry Laird, one of the pioneers of Walton County, Fla., was born in South Carolina June the 3rd, 1821. Went to Alabama while young. Married to Miss S. A. Long in 1848. They lived as equal partners in sharing the troubles and pleasures of this life, rearing a family of eleven children, consisting of seven sons and four daughters, all of whom have families, to increase their offspring to ninety-eight children, grandchildren and great grand children, who are among the living. It seems that he sought the kingdom of God, and the temporal blessings were added to him; therefore, he has ever been ready, able and willing to help orphans, widows and others of the poor, being a moral, as well as a Christian example. He was a considerate man, slow to express himself, but always logical and to the point, always wearing that bright countenance which crowns a noble character. He joined the Primitive Baptist church in 1835; was later ordained to the office of deacon, which place he filled as a dutiful servant of God, ever being found at his post of duty when not providentially hindered, and lived in humble devotion to the cause of Christ for a period of sixty-nine years. But it seems that the Lord had finished his purpose on earth with him. After occupying his bed for several days, on the 10th day of October, 1904, his spirit took its flight for that eternal home on high, making his life eighty-three years, four months and seven days, leaving his companion to mourn the loss of a faithful husband, his children a loving father, and the whole community one of its best friends. But – With angels’ wings sublime, He leaves the vanities of time; We know he now does see The glories of Eternity. J. W. Henderson [writer of the item] [See Comments] Additional Comments: Mr. Laird was the son of William and Elinder Harris Laird. He died at Defuniak Springs, Walton Co., Fla., and was buried in Gum Creek Cemetery, Glendale, Walton County. His widow, Sara Ann Long Laird, survived until 1918. At the time of the 1850 ad 1860 U. S. Censuses, the Laird’s lived in Coffee Co., Alabama – and were at Uchee Anna in Walton Co., Fla., by 1870.
