Evansville Argus - June 25, 1938
New Brockton, ALA - Ben Smith, ex-slave, who never took medicine until he passed 
the century mark, and who was active until two weeks ago, died Thursday at the age 
of 112 years.  Born in Henry County in 1827, he was the slave of the Gray family 
until 1864, when he was liberated.  He became ill two weeks ago and then boasted 
he "never took a doctor's medicine until I was 100 years old."  His long life he 
attributed to a vegetable diet and abstinence from alcohol.
