Martin. It was later operated by his son, Leon, after Mr. Martin's retirement. The Martin Drugstore closed in 1982 upon Leon Martin's failing health. All the inventory, furnishings, soda fountain, ledgers, etc. remained in the building. The building and its contents were placed on the market in 1995. They were acquired by Landmark Park with the purpose of preserving this unique turn-of- the century drugstore. Plans were developed to construct a building of the same dimensions to house the collection. In addition to re-creating the drugstore, the plans included an operating soda fountain and doctors office. A replica drugstore building was constructed in 2001 and all the cabinets and furniture were moved into the new building. The task of cleaning, labeling, identifying and moving the massive inventory of drugstore items and medicines is only 30 per cent - 40 percent complete. The Martin Drugstore is very likely the most complete turn-of-the century drugstore in the state of Alabama. The drugstore is open to the public on from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and from 1-5 p.m. on Sundays. Additional operating hours are expected to be announced soon. Menu items include shakes, malts, floats, ice cream and other old-fashioned soda treats. Admission to Landmark Park is $3 for adults and $2 for children, with free admission to park members.
