In the demise of this man, Society has lost an ornament - the poor of his neighborhood, a kind benefactor - the survivors of his family, an indulgent protector, and his country a patriot. On our western frontier from his boyhood, the opponent, but never an unrelenting victor - An officer in the late Creek and Seminole wars, he had the friendship of his commander and the love and respect of his men. These best exhibit his character as a soldier. At South Florence, in this county, on Thursday the 24 inst. after a tedious illness. We have not room for the whole letter today; but we give the following extract. If it be true, what will be said or thought by his partizans? May we not say with fervor, " God be praised that he was not elected President ! " " He (General Jackson) asked me if I did not believe that a majority of the citizens of the United States were at all times ripe for revolution! And on my answering in the negative, he rose on his feet and gesticulated with great earnestness. " The mass of the people, said he, are ripe, always ripe, for novelty and innovation but they do not know it. They many have pure hearts, and real patriotism. But a mere name a Hero, " wind himself among the multitude, " captivate the imagination and lay the judgement a sleep. A popular hobby will carry him to the highest destiny known to the Constitutation, and as much higher as his ambition may prompt him to go. I have little faith (continued he) in the stability of the public. They fall as easy prey to the passions of ambitions rivals for power. I was once tempted by the insolance of Gov. Rabun of Georgia, to march a hostile army, into that state. Had I done so, it would have been in pursuit of personal revenge, I should have had no other motive. But if the work of revenge had begun, other enemics and other motives would have arisen out of the contest. Heaven only, could predict the catastrophe! Braggs { Obituary } Death in any way is terrible, smiling intancy as it falls into the tomb, draws from us the tears of sorrow, old age, as it lays low its hoary head and deforms its its snowy locks with the cloud of the valley, fills us with emotions painful and solomn, convincing us that the most extreme limit of human life, is but a span. But when we are called to the grave where man in the prime of his days and in the full tide of his usefulness has shuffled off this mortal coil then it is that we feel the power of death. Seldom has the stern Message made more severe visitation than in with drawing from the circle of his friends and acquaintance, William Mason ISAAC B. DESHA, This unfortunate individual, on the 31st of August was boarding in a tavern to Cynthiana, and was apparently in tolerable health. His windpipe which severed by the attempt to cut his throat, still remained asunder, and there was no connection between it and the mouth. He breaths through a silver tube in Ertel in his throat eats and drinks without difficulty, but can only articulate ( in whisper ) a few words at a time. His wife has again joined him, and remains with him. Query, Would not the Irishman's regimen be more applicable, i. e. Little hemp. Lou Adv. Dulling, The passion of dueling is making it way into all the obscure nooks of society. Two journeyman shoemakers of Philadelphia lately retired to Gallows Hill ( the proper place ) to settle an affair of honor. This comes of that mischievous motive of human action, the love of imitation. If Mr. Clay shoots at Mr. Randolph, why should not Tom Timpkins? In this county a secretary is no better than a shoemaker.--Noah HENRY S. FOOTE, ATTORNEY AT LAW, Having fixed his residence in the town of Tuscumbia, will in attend the Courts of Lauderdale, Franklin and Lawrence county and the Supreme Court. POLITICAL, From The Cincinnati Advertiser, THE RETREAT, The prevailing rumor of Mr. Clay's contemplated resignation of office of Secretary of State, on the pretence of ill health, has given rise to a variety of conjectures. It is supposed by some, that it is his intention to retire to his late residence in Kentucky, and lend the whole force of his influence to prevent that state going for General Jackson; others are opinion that he will take a foreign embassy. Presidential Election, The trumpet has been sounded. From every quarter of the Union, the busy note of preparation is heard. Only two candidates have, as yet, been publicly and formally announced . Mr. Adams and Gen. Jackson. Others are probably in the background. It strikes us that the war is rather premature. A Presidential election is a great disturber of the national quiet. Lets us have peace as long as we can. A short war may be carried on with more vigor than a long one. When the proper time comes, we shall shoulder our musket, and rally round the Republican standard. We are ready for the battle, but have no inclination to fatigue ourselves with the skirmish. N. Y . Eng.
