This was the name of a well known family of this county many years ago, and it is also the name of the New City to be built on the banks of the Tennessee River at York Bluff. That it will rival its great namesake in England some day, is fondly hoped by its founders who are jubilant over its splendid prospects. The capital stock of $300,000 was all taken up within forty-eight hours after it was put on the market, and some of it was sold to Huntsville last Tuesday for twenty-five per cent premium. Engineers with a large force, will commence laying off the city and grading streets in a short time. It is situated in a lovely spot on the high bluff immediately north of Tuscumbia and two miles from this place. No more beautiful location could have been found in the South, the river scenery equaling that of the Hudson or the upper Tennessee. It is probably a hundred feet higher than Tuscumbia with a gently undulating plateau extending to that place. The lands of Messrs. Winston, Barnes, Hubbler and the Tuscumbia Landing and the York Bluff tract have been bought by the Company with a river front of about four miles. The L. A. & T. R. R. will be rapidly pushed to the Iron and Coal fields south of us and, henceforth, this part of the Tennessee Valley will improve with amazing rapidity. Messrs. Walter S. Gordon, Judge Tompkins and Maj. Burke, of Atlanta, Mr. Stradley, of South Carolina, Mr. Robinson, of Mississippi, and Maj. Stevens, of the Huntsville National Bank, have been busy here this week organizing and perfecting their plans, Col. Gordon has been elected President of the Company, and will make his headquarters on one of his recent purchases very soon.
