ALGenWeb File Manager - Carolyn Golowka ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Contributed by Margaret Lindsey Smith, March 2000 During the school year 1916-17 my grandmother, Lula Belle Dean, then a new graduate of the Baptist Collegiate Institute in Newton, taught 4th-7th grades at the Children's Home in Evergreen. After her death in 1980, we discovered the gradebook she used at the time, listing her students. I will be sending a copy of the gradebook to the Children's Home (which is now located in Troy, AL), but thought it might be helpful to post the information on the Conecuh Co. GenWeb site as well, in case anyone is looking for ancestors who may have been at the Home during that period. In addition to the gradebook, we have a partial diary that goes through the first weeks of my grandmother's time at Evergreen. In it she mentions several of the staff: Mr. Spinks (the Superintendent), Burnie ? (a friend from the Baptist Collegiate Institute in Newton), Miss Rose Andrews (the girls' matron), Miss Peeks (the kindergarten teacher), a Miss Haralson and a Mrs. Wright. Possibly connected with the orphanage, or maybe with the church in town, were a Mr. Cunningham and a Mr. Ivy. Also she mentions "Manny Morris" (quotation marks hers), who may have been a person or may have been the name of a vehicle!
