Gaston from The Evergreen Courant, Thursday, April 6, 1933 Aged Citizen Dies At Belleville Tuesday Tuesday marked the end of the career of another of Conecuh’s pioneer citizens, when James W. Gaston, age 86 passed away at the home of his son Chas. C. Gaston at Belleville. Deceased had been in declining health for a number of years though the illness which resulted in his death was only of a few days duration. Mr Gaston was a native of Belleville and spent his early life there. For a number of years prior to his death he had lived in Repton, having served that town as Mayor for eight years. He was held in high esteem by scores of friends and neighbors who always found him to be honest and upright in every sense of the word. He took an active interest in the affairs of his community and was recognized as a leader upon whom the people might always depend. Having definite convictions upon the various issues and problems constantly confronting citizens of his type, he stood by these convictions firmly and courageously. With him duty was a watchword and his word his bond. Religiously, the deceased was affiliated with the Baptist church and it was largely due to his efforts that the Repton Baptist church was organized. He gave untiringly of his time, effort and means toward the upbuilding of this church during the most active years of his life. He was married to Miss Mahaley Andrews early in life, who was his faithful companion until her death a few months ago. Funeral services were held at Belleville Baptist church Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock, conducted by his pastor, Rev. R.D. Wright and an old lifetime friend, Rev. S.P. Lindsey. The rites were attended by hosts of relatives and friends from all sections of this and adjoining counties. Interment was made in Belleville Baptist church cemetery. Surviving are three sons, R.H. Gaston, C.C. Gaston, Belleville. L.C. Gaston, Mobile; one daughter, Mrs. Tennie Smith, Belleville; one brother John Gaston, Repton; two sisters, Mrs. J.C. Chappell and Mrs. J.S. Weatherford, Repton.
