Her parents were John Simmons and Margaret Nutt. Her father was a veteran soldier of the Revolutionary War having served in the North Carolina Militia and was wounded at the Battle of Cowpens in South Carolina. Her brother William Isaac was also a veteran soldier who was also at the battle of Cowpens. Rhoda's maternal uncle, Isaac Nutt was killed in action at Cowpens. After the Revolutionary War her family moved to Georgia. The family lived in Baldwin County. Her father and her brother William Isaac had land in Baldwin County. Rhoda was married to William S.Scurlock in Hancock County, Georgia in the Fall of 1790. Her husband was a veteran of the Revolutionary War. Her father and brother William Isaac moved after selling their land in Baldwin County to Talbot County in the western part of the state. Rhoda and William were living in Baldwin County in 1830. Her husband made application for a pension for his services in the North Carolina Militia during the Revolutionary War. He was pensioned in 1833. Her husband is listed as deceased on the pension rolls after 1834. Although her husband was listed as deceased on that record he was still living. Rhoda and William moved to Talbot and then Muscogee County. They lived in Muscogee County, Georgia in the north western part of the county in 1840. Rhoda and William were visiting their son, John Scurlock at his home in Muscogee County. They had been visiting for about a month when her husband suffered an injury after a fall from a carriage and did not recover. Her husband made his will in Muscogee County, Georgia in Aug of 1840. He was in his last illness. By Jan of 1841 his will was proved in court and he was deceased. William died on the 2nd of Sep 1840 in Muscogee County. Rhoda is named as a legatee in her husband's will along with her daughter, Caroline Matilda Files. After the death of her husband Rhoda was living with her daughter Catharine also known as Kitty Scurlock Collins and her husband. They were living in Russell County, Alabama in 1850. Kitty Scurlock Collins moved with her husband and family to Coosa County, Alabama and Rhoda moved with her. A letter found in the William Scurlock pension file from Kitty Scurlock Collins indicates that her mother died on 13 Mar 1851 at her home in Coosa County, Alabama. The location of her burial has not been determined. Rhoda and William had the following known children: Catherine b. 1792, Joshua b. 1797, Daniel Norman b. 1799, John b.1802, Priestly Norman b.1806, Winnifred, and Caroline Matilda b.1811 Additional Comments: Kitty and Joseph Collins were living in Coosa County, Alabama. in 1860. Elmore County was created in 1866 from portions of Coosa and Tallapoosa County. Catherine (Kitty) and Joseph Collins were living in Elmore County, Alabama in June of 1870. Catherine was living in Buyckville, Elmore County in 1880. She was living with her daughter, Caroline Bridgeman. Buyck is on a map of Elmore just south and east of Sykes Mill in the north west portion of the county.
