It is therefore ordered by the court that letters of administration issue to said Cecil Gray upon the estate of said Chesley Morris, upon his entering into bond with approved security in the sum of two thousand dollars constitutioned as the law directs. It is further ordered that Joseph Dunlop, Thomas F. Bussey, and Thomas C. Dunlop be and are hereby appointed appraisers to value and appraise upon their oaths all personal property belonging to said estate and return this term to this court within two calendar months from date hereof. It is further ordered that said administrator give notice of his said appointment by publication in Dorsey's Dispatch, a newspaper published in the city of Wetumpka, once a week for six successive weeks. It is further ordered that said administrator return an inventory of the personal effects belonging to said estate to this court within 60 days from date hereof. State of Alabama Coosa County Probate Court Vacation November 1st 1855 This day came Cecil Gray administrator of Chesley Morris deceased and returned the appraisement and inventory of personal property belonging to said estate. It is therefore ordered by the court that said appraisement and inventory be entered of record and filed in office. J.W. Suttle, Judge of Probate State of Alabama Coosa County Probate Court Vacation November 1st 1855 This day came Cecil Gray administrator of Chesley Morris dec'd. and filed his petition in words and figures following: State of Alabama Coosa County To the Hon'l. the Judge of Probate, foresaid county, the undersigned administrator of the estate of Chesley Morris deceased, respectfully showeth unto your Honor, that said Intestate died possessed of the following personal property, viz: one horse, cattle, hogs, goats, 1 buggy & harness, 1 small wagon and harness, 1 set blacksmith tools, household and kitchen furnatuer [sic], corn and fodder, a sale of which is necessary for a fair and equitable divisino amongst the heirs of said decedent, your petitioner therefore prays an order of sale of said property aforesaid for the purposes aforesaid, and as in duty bound your petitioner will ever pray ye. [signed] Cecil Gray Novr. 1st 1855 Said petition being verified by written affidavit of said administrator, it is therefore ordered by the court that said administrator sale of said property aforesaid, at the Late Residence of said Intestate on a credit of not less than six months after having given at least thirty days notice of the time and place of said sale by posting up notice of at the courthouse door and threw [sic] other public places in said county, taking notes with approved security from purchasers. It is further ordered by the court that said administrator return account of said sale to this court within 60 days from date hereof. J.W. Suttle, Judge of Probate State of Alabama Coosa County Probate Court Vacation November 1st A.D. 1855 This day came Cecil Gray administrator of Chesley Morris deceased and filed his petition in words and figures following: State of Alabama Coosa County To the Honorable the Judge of Probate for said county, the undersigned administrator of Chesley Morris Deceased, respectfully showeth with your Honor that said Intestate died seized and possessed of the following described lands viz the Southwest Quarter of the Northeast Quarter and the Northeast Quarter of the Northwest Quarter of Section Thirty Two (32) Township Twenty Two (22) of Range Nineteen (19) East in the Tallapoosa Land District, that a sale of said lands is necessary for a fair and equitable division amongst the distributees of said estate, your petitioner therefore prays an order of sale of said lands for the purposes aforesaid. The distributees are Loduskey Morris widow of said Dec'd., Cecil Gray in right of his wife Mary of the state of Alabama of lawful age, James Morris, Joseph Morris, William Morris, Washington Morris, Sarah Morris, Elizabeth Morris & Burrell Morris all non residents of the state of Alabama, of lawful age, and as in duty bound your petitioner will ever pray this November 1st 1855. [signed] Cecil Gray Said petition being verified by written affidavit, it is therefore ordered by the court that notice of said petition be given by publication in Dorsey's Dispatch a newspaper in the city of Wetumpka, once a week for three successive weeks to all persons concerned in the premises to appear at regular term of this court to be held on the 2nd Monday of December next and contest said petition if they choose. J.W. Suttle, Judge of Probate Estate of Chestly Morris, Deceased State of Alabama Coosa County Probate Court, Regular Term, April 11th 1859 This day having been set to hear and determine all matters as to the accounts heretofore filed by Cecil Gray, Admininstrator of the Estate of Chestly Morris Deceased for a fiscal settlement of his said administration. Now comes the said Cecil Gray admr. aforesaid and moves the court that his said accounts may be passed and allowed as the same as hereby him filed as aforesaid: And it appearing that due Notice of the nature of and of the time set to make such settlement has been given, in all respects according to law, and strictly in pursuance of the order of this court in said estate made and entered on the 25th day of January 1859 - the Court proceeds to hear the amtter pertaining to said accounts and to consider the evidences submitted relating thereto: Whereupon it is shown by sufficient proof that the said administrator has received of the assets of said estate the sum of Nine hundred and Twelve & 65/100 Dollars, and that he has justly expended in and about the cost and charges necessary and incident to said administration and in the payment of the just debts of said Dec'd. the sum of Five Hundred and Thirty Five & 19/100 Dollars, leaving a balance for distribution of Three Hundred and Seventy Seven and 46/100 Dollars amonst those entitled and said accounts appearing to be full and correct. It is considered and decreed by the court that said accounts be and the same are hereby in all things passed and allowed as above stated. And it further apperaing that said Decedent left him surviving his Widow Mrs. Lodusky Morris & eight children, viz: Polly Ann Gray wife of Cecil Gray, William, Washington, Burrell, James, & Joseph Morris, Elizabeth Fuller wife of Elijah Fuller, and Sarah Morris all of whom are of lawful age and are entitled to share said $377.46 in equal proportions so that the same must be divided into nine equal parts. It is considered by the court that each of said distributees are entitled to have the sum of Forty One & 92/100 Dollars paid to them respectively, that being one ninth prat of the said $377.46 and the proper share to which said distributees are severally entitled. It is therefore ordered adjudged and decreed that the said distributees do each have and recover of and from the aforesaid administrator the sum of $41.92 for which executions may issue as follows, viz: in favor of Lodusky Morris for her share, in favor of Polly Ann Gray wife of Cecil Gray for her share, in favor of Washington Morris for his share, in favor of William Morris for his share, in favor of Burrell Morris for his share, in favor of James Morris for his share, in favor of Joseph Morris for his share, in favor of Elizabeth Fuller wife of Elijah Fuller for her share, in favor of Sarah Morris for her share. It is further ordered that all account, evidences and statements on file respecting this and any former settlement respecting said estate be recorded. A.A. McMillan, Judge. Additional Comments: Chesley Morris is found in the 1820 Jasper Co., GA census; in 1830 he was in Henry Co., GA, and was in Coosa Co., AL by about 1834. His first wife's name is unknown.
