McCord, 36, cousin of Federal Judge Leon McCord, drowned this afternoon despite heroic efforts of a schoolteacher, Miss Clyde Rogers, who brought him nearly to shore only to lose him exhausted by the struggle. The tragedy occurred about 4:30 p. at Hamilton Eddy on Hatchett Creek near Goodwater. McCord and Miss Rogers and two small children were on a swimming party and picnic. McCord, according to reports, had been rowing the party in a boat and had become warm with the exertion. He and Miss Rogers decided to take a short swim and started across the creek. Making a race of it, they sped along with Miss Rogers pulling in front. Looking back, she saw her companion apparently in trouble and went to his assistance. He told her, she said, he had a cramp and was having some trouble getting in. As he started under, she grabbed his hair and began towing him to the bank. When nearly there he slipped from her grasp and went under. With none able to drive their car, Miss Rogers ran a mile barefoot to the highway where she summoned help and an unidentified man went back with her and pulled McCord out. More assistance arrived from Goodwater, and he was rushed to Alexander City hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
