N. Slaughter died at his home in Goodwater, on the 22 inst. at the age of 81 years, having been born in Green county, Georgia, Nov. 4th, 1828. He studied medicine, but chose for his life-work that of teaching in which calling he made considerable success, many of our best and prominent people in Coosa, Clay and Tallapoosa counties and elsewhere, by their lives and characters do honor to his memory and are living evidence of the high order and success of his efforts. From early life Dr. Slaughter was a member of the Presbyterian church, by an unblemished character and christian services to men and obedience to Heaven's laws, he exemplified the religion he professed. He was a veteran of the war between the states, having enlisted in Company B. Thirty-fourth Alabama regiment in the early part of the year 1862 and went to the front as Captain of his Company and was soon afterwards promoted Major and commanded the regiment until the same was surrendered at High Point, N. C. This regiment was under fire and actively engaged in the battles of Muffresboro, Chicamauga, Mission Ridge, the "hundred days' battle" from Dalton to Jonesboro, and Franklin and Nashville at the latter place Dr. Slaughter was wounded during the first day's fight. He represented Tallapoosa county in the legislature in 1881; after which he moved to this county and in 1892 was elected County Treasurer which position he filled for one term; after that time he retired from public life and spent the time until the day of his death at his home in Goodwater devoting his entire attention to his farm and home life. He leaves a widow, and two sons, Prof. R. M. Slaughter, of Goodwater, and Dr. M. J. Slaughter, of Millerville, Ala., and one daughter, Miss Emmie, and many relatives and friends, among whom are many who were his students in youth, and a few who were his companions in arms - all whom mourn his loss.
