File Manager - Carolyn Golowka ******************************************************************* Contributed by Steve Etheridge NOV 1999 The 1850 Agricultural Census of Covington County, Alabama as Transcribed by Lois Danley and Steve Etheridge The following is a transcription of the 1850 Covington County, Alabama agricultural census. These records were transcribed from paper copies of microfilmed copies of the original agriculturalcensus books. These microfilms can be found at the Alabama Department of Archives and History in Montgomery, Alabama. The original agricultural census books were apparently destroyed after being microfilmed. We have made every effort to transcribe these records as accurately as possible. The microfilmed copies are in relatively good shape. However, handwriting was a little difficult to decipher at times. Hopefully, there are few errors, if any. We apologize for any errors that are found. We were not able to follow the original census format, as it consisted of 46 columns with each column having its own heading. (Please see the enumeration below.) You will also notice that names of individual farmers appear only on those pages with odd census numbers (1029, 1031). That is because columns 1 through 19 appear on one page. Columns 20 through 46 appear on the next page. The names of farmers are found in column 1 and, therefore, will occur only on every other page. Each individual farmer is also assigned a line number which appears directly before each name. You can be assured that noinformation was left out and that all agricultural products are listed for each individual farmer. The index that occurs at the end of the transcription is based on the page number that appears at the bottom of each page. It is not based on the census page number that occurs as part of the header. We apologize for any confusion this might cause but decided to take advantage of the indexing capabilities provided with our word processing program. This also prompted us to list individual farmers last name first instead of last name last as occurs in the original census book. Please distribute this transcription to anyone you care to. We undertook this endeavor in the spirit of sharing. We hope that it will be of value to those researchers with roots in Covington County and will provide access to a very interesting facet of our ancestor's lives.
